You might also like to visit a number of castles in Sweden, that used to belong to Denmark and a played a significant role in danish history (Kalmar Slot, Kärnan etc.) and the many wars fought between Denmark and Sweden.

Kärnan fortress is no longer there, there’s only one tower left. The rest was destroyed by the Swedes

Before the peace treaty btw Sweden and Denmark 1658, Kronborg slot was in the center of Denmark. Halland, Skåne and Blekinge was Denmark before. After the castle was at the edge of Denmark. The outermost stand against the arch enemy Sweden. At the other side of the strait is the castle Kärnan. Originally Danish. All goods from the baltic sea had to go through the very center of Denmark, and they wanted a part of the cake. So they took a fee to pass Öresund. Kronborg and Kärnan was the castles for the force to claim that fee.

Castles beside these mentioned with Danish roots for me are Amalienborg (incl the museum) Christiansborg (with its representative rooms) Eremitage (open for public sometimes) Gjorslev (only few tours each year) Lerchenborg (Closed) Ledreborg (open for public sometimes) Gammel Estrup (Danish Manor house museum) Gråsten (open for public sometimes) Augustenborg (former psychiatrics hospital, church open) Gottorp castle in Germany (maybe best known for Peter 3rd who had some claims to the Danish throne, Swedish throne and Russian throne. (He was killed by his wife Catherine the Great)) Glücksburg (housename of the Danish royal family) Elbschausse in Hamburg (some of the older Villas made under Danish rule are small castles) Malmöhus (in periodes home of the danish mint today city museum) Landskrona citadel Kalmar slott Vadstena slott Örebro Slott Drottningholm, Grippsholm, Skokloster, Kungliga Slott and other castles in Stockholm area

Christiansborg is important for our history and the history of Copenhagen. It’s where the founder of Copenhagen Absalon ( the bishop ) lived and later it became Copenhagen castle which again became in 1740s christiansborg slot. It burned down twice. The stables belong to the first castle, the church to the second and the rest is of course the latest one. Inside the queens has her staterooms where you can see interesting wall drawings ( Gobeliner )

Valdemar slot is worth a visit. It is located in the small isles below Fyn, you know near Ærø. The castle itself is not something amazing compared to the ones you listed, but they have a vast collection of stuffed animals, so while you are in the area (and one should be in the area at least once in their life, because those isles are magnificent) you could make a trip to the castle as well.

If you haven’t yet, you should take a look at Frederiksberg slot. Back in the day it was just outside the city gates, and the king had it made as his leisure palace. Since then it has become more famous for being where the queen and Struensee would meet, you know them from “A Royal Affair”. For the past 150 years it has housed the military officer school.

Christiansborg is something I think you missed. Especially if you can get a tour. There's also a decent restaurant in the tower where it's possible to break and go to the top of the tower between courses for a great view of Copenhagen. Another one that might be of particular interest although there isn't much left is Kalø Slotsruin which is close to Aarhus on the way Towards Ebeltoft. I imagine Josh would enjoy the lack of roofs in that ruin and Maya may enjoy that you walk through a pasture that'll have cows grazing in the summer.

Kronborg is supposedly the inspiration behind Elsinore castle in Hamlet by Shakespeare. You might have come across the US version but in the UK there's a show called Who Do You Think You Are? Judi Dench has been on the most recent series and has found out she's a distant relative to Tycho Brahe (like the Planetarium in Copenhagen), and their common relative served the Queen and lived at Kronborg Castle (which feels like a giant circle as Judi Dench started her job as an actress in a lot of Shakespeare plays at the RSC in the UK). The whole episode isn't available but there are clips available on RU-vid.

Surprised that Amalienborg, Christiansborg and Fredensborg isn’t on here. That would have made it a top 10 list ;) never seen Gavnø, but otherwise agree on the list. A few things you should have mentioned about Frederiksborg: - It was the pride of Christian the IV’s buildings. - The Swedes took the original fountain from the Castle after the Danish-Swedish Wars. The original stands today in front of Drottingholm Castle in Stockholm. The one in Frederiksborg is a copy commissioned by IC Jacobsen, the founder of Carlsberg. - Much of the castle burnt down in 1859, and IC Jacobsen commissioned its reconstruction.

Kalø Slotsruin. It is a ruin. In fact - nothing more than rubble and the remnants of a tower. But there is so much history tied to Kalø Slot. Built (reluctantly and under duress) by the lownobels to keep them in check. It recides where there is no access to it by car. You have to park about 1.5 km away, and walk out to the ruin at Denmarks longest midieval road. In 1518-19, a man named Carl Gustav was held captive on the castle. He later became king of Sweden.

Christiansborg is interesting because it is such a new castle/palace. The main building was finished in 1928, built of reinforced concrete - and then covered in granite. We often forget that it's such a fairly new building! But it's also interesting for the ruins in the basement, the royal state rooms (and the kitchens made to serve them), and of course the majority of the building that's set aside for parliament. And the views from the tower are spectacular! (And on top of that comes the older, ancillary buildings like the stables, the court theatre and the royal chapel. If you plan it right, Christiansborg is definitely a full day out!!!) It's not my favourite castle/palace, but it would definitely deserve to be on a list like this.

You need to dive more into Sønderborg slot, because it is history wise defining for Denmark, the 1848/1864 wars with Germany or what would become Germany was the last great wars Denmark ever fought and lost, and why we lost Schelswig holstein and sønderjylland, after WW1 Denmark was cheeky enough to get sønderjylland back in 1919/1920, maybe see the movie "1864" , if you want to understand Danish culture I think there are 2 defining moments: 1807 Slaget på Reden When the british took the danish Fleet and 1864, was proberly the downfall off imperial Denmark and marked until today!

Yeah, the 1864 war is fascinating to me. I plan to watch the movie in the near future.

Strange Christiansborg isn’t on any of your list. Great view of Copenhagen from the tower, the tapestries, the parliament, the war museum, the medieval fair and on and 😊

Spøtrupborg may not look as imporner as the other castles. But it is also much older than the other castles. It is the best preserved medieval defense castle in Denmark.

And another note, if you want to avoud the nightmare bridge in the way to Egeskov then you can take a Ferry from Lolland to Langeland on the way to Egeskov. But you have to cross the 2 Farø bridges (Or the Storestrøm Bridge) and the bridge from Lolland to Fyn.

You might ask - why wasn¨t countess Danner not buried with her husband in Roskilde Domkirke? Because she was a simple ballet-dancer, when she married the King.

I'm curious about how you guys feel about the age of consent in Denmark. I know it's kind of a hot button issue for a lot of Americans (especially parents) But it could be kind of cool to get your point of view on that subject matter.
