Maya is super excited about her Studenterhue arriving, as she is so close to graduation. She takes us on a little tour and explains what the tradition is about!
Stort tillykke, Maya!! I've got 3 kids, all are students (actually 2 have allready finished their University Degrees, last one is dragging his feet, studying medicin in Aarhus University) Congratulations to your parents too!!!! Knus
The difference between to the court or the the queen is simply: Does SHE shop there? So Carlsberg naturally delivers to the court, but the queen doesn't necessarily drink their products. But if SHE frequently comes in to your shop - or insists on buying your specific brand of tea, your in a different league... by appointment to the queen ... So perhaps Sportsmaster and Intersport can soon apply.... "by appointment to the Danish King" 🤣🤣🤣 I don't know if the "court" buys enough 🤔
Remember they all loose the title from 14. January 2025, after Frederik became king... It was the same, when Margrethe became queen... Then they royal court will decide, if it continues..
Congratulations, Maya! We have similar in Sweden, and I got mine in 1984. The old lady (she was around 90-95 years old at the time) who fitted mine was completely blind and still she managed to "feel" the correct size within half a size. I was impressed.
Oh yes - same here. I have been following you from almost your start in Denmark and now Maya is an adult! Great to see that you are thriving and good luck with your studentereksamen. 🤞🏼
The moment, when you are "allowed" to where your studenterhue, will be something you will remember for the rest of your life. After that just enjoy the pride and the smiles you get from old people like me, enjoy the traditions following the hat. Just be crazy and do crazy stoffer, because this time will never come back, and no matter if you graduate from university it won't not even close be the same feeling.
In my time, 55 year ago, it was the teacher, for your last oral exam, that put the hat on after giving you the grade. The family were only bystanders. And I still have my hat. It is the classical red, like your. In those day, we went to a shop in the center of Copenhagen, on Klareboderne, to try it out for size. The real original one, in 1865 was black but none of my fellow students had such a hat. You will, once you get your hat, wear it, also when walking on the street and hear that people will will approach you with "Til lykke med huen". The "By appointment to the Royal Danish court" is a Certificate of Honour to the company. This is not due to the "studenterhue". C.L. Seifert has for many years been the supplier of Gala Uniforms to the Armed Forces.
side note for outsiders: The school she is in/referencing - Gymnasium or STX is the original kind (pre University) - in later years there are more specific schools as she said for business or stem she said. but Gymnasium dates back to the 1600s - Some who has that red hat enjoys telling that its the original and usually like singing about it too (there's only one real hat and it is red...) Friendly banter in the weeks after graduation as the partying is being done heavily.
Btw, in my school the tradition was that you got the Hat from your teacher after the last exam. That way there was no way you could wear it (and get bad luck) before the exam :P
Hhx student of 96 here.. I am so happy we did not have all the traditions back then, because my hat is very dear to me. I hope your pen works better then mine in time... all the greetings have more or less wanished with time. Good luck on your exams.
Oh and another thing. Random people will congratulate you in the street, if you wear it out. Plus a lot of places have special prices for you if you wear the hat.
Seifert has been ‘Hofleverandør’ i.e. allowed to promote themselves with ‘By appointment to the Danish court’ since 1903. Apparently they also have had the same distinction in Sweden since 1911. The wording does not change with a new succession to the throne. It can be revoked at any time and there have been talks recently in connection with King Frederik X taking over wether this is an outdated tradition.
Geez, Maya has grown up since you started the channel, she is quite danish in comparison to the early videos, big congrats, I still have my hat from CL Seifert (of course) from '87 🙂 Oh, and you bring red roses to your friends, give 1 to each of your friends 🙂
Wauw!! Well done, Maya. Willpower is the biggest superpower of all! And you've had the will to learn Danish and accomplish something many native-speaking Danish haven't/can't. Do hope we'll see a few glimpses of the day of the ride in the Studentervogn in June 😁 (Perhaps a few US students or parents of students will be inspired ...🙃)
Big congrats! The cockade on the front of the studenterhue (student cap) is actually a representation of the Danish flag ~ namely a white cross (silver when in metal, according to heraldic tradition) on a red bottom. Technically, that also means that any school who is using a gold cross instead to appear more "posh"... is actually flying the flag of the Swedish province of Skåne (Scania). True fact. 😄 * it used to be a tradition, that if you passed out drunk during any of the following studenter parties ~ everyone else had the right to cut off the visor... entirely... whereas cutting into the inside hat band was number of parties you had attended where you stayed up until the Sun came up again (seems to be the same today).
Congratulations, Maya! Wow, the studenterhue-ology has evolved since 1980. I had seven notches in the sweatband for sunrises plus a bunch of signatures from all my classmates and other people I met along the way. My class teacher put it on me immediately after the last exam :)
Jeg venter med at ønske tillykke indtil Maya er blevet student rigtigt, og så håber jeg at i laver en video om selve dagen hvor hun får huen på. 👩💻👩🎓
Its such a big achievement congratulations Maya! I hope you're getting celebrated a lot, and get to celebrate with your classmates and friends! :D I really wish i had been well enough to get my own, but it would likely not have been as fun for me anyways (as a nerdy introvert, that doesn't drink, these kind of highlights in life are just a tad more down to earth for me haha!) I do hope everybody who gets their hat, has lots of fun and celebrate it!
Thanks! I will share this with a few folks at the high school (I'm on the IT staff) here in California. (Mortarboards are just sad compared to these caps!)
Good luck with the exams - hope you will share it here. As a Dane it is really nice to see how you react to our traditions, real life and so on - It warms my heart. P.S. The education path I took did not include the "Studenter-Hue" (or equivalent) ... well it did 3 to 4 years after I finished - but then it was all about work! ( I did envy my little sister when she got hers! what a party!!!! )
Congrats Maya, we have a similar tradition in Finland. Do Danes use the hat also after graduation? Here it's a tradition to use it always on Labor Day and when you go to University you add more things to the hat. Here students use the hat at most Uni parties between May and September.
5:40 I love that xD I got "Jeg tabte spillet" engraved in mine since The Game has been a running gag throughout my STU years. Still haven't told my parents, teachers or friends though. Congrats Maya!
Wow stuff has happened since I got mine 19 years ago! I got the expensive option back then, and it is no where near as detailed as yours. Love the extra options they provide now. Love your choice with “rød grød med fløde”, that is what you must have met the most in the years you’ve been here, and it says so much more than what is spelled out!
In old, Danish photographs you will see the students were wearing black hats. Then it was the red band for "general" gymnasium. Then other kinds of gymnasiums also wanted proof of their stdentereksamen and more colours of bands were introduced. I got mine in 1978 for the "general" studentereksamen. A few years later I decided to d the HH for those who were already students and we didn't have hat. So e turned up in caps donated by a local tractor store. Next year they had hats 😊
I got the blue one many years ago, because I went to Niels Brock Business College and finished HH (Højere Handelseksamen). I didn't know about the "jumping over the hat" part :D I just knew I would get a small triangle cut out of the hat, If I threw up, at one of the many many parties, the next weeks after graduating. It never happened, even though I made a great effort to accomplish that.
In the "more obscure ones" category, you'll find the strap comes off entirely, IF you drink so much that you go to the hospital to get pumped out, AND you hook up with a nurse at the hospital (before, during or emediately after. You also would have to remove the bill entirely due to the stomache pump. If you hook up with a teacher, you have to turn the cover (presumably in shame) There is also one for hooking up with a parent of one of your classmates during the wagon tour - but i think we'll leave it at that one well alone ;)
I got the traditional black version with dark blue band (htx). Mine also had htx on the front and the sides. My great grandma put my hat on me after I finished my last exam. It’s been 15 years. Time flies. Back then you could also get a gold version. Not sure if you can get it today. Also stx is state school, htx is higher technical school, hhx is higher business school. I know it’s not perfect translation. Plus there’s hats and colors for farm school, nursing school, hairdresser etc.
Tillykke! I do like to say I never got a hat for the type of educate I did but I got what we call a later ( Sven brev ) which is more for the blue collar or trading schools type of deal.
Congrats! If I remember correctly there is also a black version on STX. Great thing with the pins - cutting was a bit of a bummer - But 24 beers during 24 hours or during the whole house to house during the day ending with the sunset at the last place in the class is actually very doable especially if there is like food at every students place - We made sure that like 5 or six places had food so that there wouldn't be food at all the students places and a lot of food wouldn't be wasted.
ORIGINALLY, the black hat was the everyday hat, while the white one was the summer version. Later, the black hat meant that the person in question was an old-language student. that is, he or she had had both Greek and Latin
When I graduated, we chose our hat, but it was kept at the school and the teacher put it on your head after the last exam. So no opportunity to cheat 😉
Best of luck with your exams. Btw. I don't think you mentioned the five little stars on the side. I believe they represent graduating with five A level subjects?
I’m so excited you got your hat. It is way better the the square hat in the US… and, in the US, you don’t get to keep the square hat, only the tassel that has the school colors and the year you graduated. Beautiful hat and awesome box to put it in. What fun stuff to do with the pins. Can you imagine here in the US if we could drink 24 cans or run through the field only with your hat? Haha the parents and or school board would snap . Haha
Congrats with your hat By the Way there is also a Black hat and in order to get that all your classes have to be Level Extra a or something☺️ Very Happy for you🎉
Oh, wow! Tillykke, tillykke. The circle thing @2:32 is called "en kokarde". Og det er endda en hat fra Seifert. Det havde jeg aldrig haft råd til. Hvad med autograferne? Skal du have dine klassekammerater og venner til at skrive under i hatten? Er det stadig en tradition?
Oh Dear, back when I got my HHX there were only two hats The Red and The Royal Blue (the most beautiful of all 🤭), and not all the other stuff. There however there will also be a Graduation where the Principal hands over the Diploma. But for now it is hard studying
Norway has adopted this tradition and developed it further (perverted?). It's called Russetid ("russ" is the name for the final year of "gymnas"). Norwegian changed just about everything, by starting the Russetid to start in January and reach its peak at 17. May. Some people buy (or rent) a partybus, and kids (with more money than sense) commission a DJ to make a theme song for the bus! Search for more!
Depending on how rural an area it is in, we use anything from horse drawn, to old trucks, to buses, to ferry each class from home to home all day, where there will be a short break with a bit of food and lots of drinking. The start family and the end family hosts the bigger events naturally, especially the last place, as everyone is staying a long time. You've just spread it out over a longer time in Norway, where here it is more condensed over 1 or 2 super intense days. But the events of the day is the same.
One of the rules I always hear was if you ever put on the hat before you're finished with the education, you will never finish it. Nothing about jumping over it backwards to reverse it. That just couldn't be done 😬
Why do you already have it? I received mine only in late June at the day of graduation. Did you have to order it yourself? For me they were ordered by representatives of each class from the school, but I did not see mine before the evening I received it.
CL Seifert always delivered throughout the year if you needed it (some people graduate various schools in january, people may aldo have lost theirs and want ut etc. I ordered my studenterhue early, because I was taking my STX classes in a VUC (they offer both HF and STX) and I also ordered my purple graduation cap in novemver, as I graduated as a peadagog in January.
