another great video keep up the content- a good idea for more top boy content would be more in depth character analysis' of characters from each series
a lot of people who watched summerhouse before the netflix reboot will say summerhouse purely for nostalgia. as someone who watched summerhouse just before they released the first netflix season it definitely showed its age. Summerhouse is a great show and has its moments however the netflix show is on a different level. I think it has it's flaws, especially with how the show ended however that cannot take away from how well the show is produced. It builds suspense in the right moments and makes the viewers build connections to multiple characters.
The Netflix seasons were too self-aware. Dushane and sully were treated almost like celebrity characters whereas in summerhouse they were just normal dealers
In comparison Summerhouse was so real compared to Netflix Scenes like Gem struggling to sleep his first night in a trap house, or Micheal stressing while playing ps2 and waiting knowing he snitched hit harder than anything from Netflix
saved the show? Kano and ashley are by far superior actors. Stop the silly talk. I know you weren't watching Summerhouse when it first aired, definitely too young. @@GlockJ
@@inhumandestroyer the show got good when Jamie came without Jamie the show wasn’t as good season 3 was ass 1 and 2 was the best other then the season 2 ending
It really annoys me how Netflix renamed the orginial series "summerhouse", like it's a spin off or something, instead of grouping them together with the reboot. New viewers will inevitably miss out on a huge chunk of story without even realising. The original show set up so much in terms of character development for Dushane, Sully and Dris which is really essential to understanding the story as a whole
Yes exactly I was confused as I saw them both but clicked on top boy first assuming it was the original storyline while summer house was a spin off in another city with a really interesting side character or new characters having none of original cast in the main cast until I got invested by the second episode I kept hearing summerhouse and feeling there’s much more to Dushane and Sully obviously Jamie was a new character seeing him as a character we met for the first time but with sully and dushane and how they talked about them it’s like they are not characters we are meeting for the first time and their hood is summer house especially when we see sully and Modies beef it made me look at the other show to make sure I was wrong
I havn't watched the show for years. I watched the original one years ago, but I have no idea the name of it now. You say they renamed the original show?
@@BrainPiloti Like Top Boy Only the Last season is a Bit Trash People Still Asking What to Happening Ranell and his Mother Lisa and All cast Member of Top Boy Summerhouse
@@AlumniDanielyou always find a man running around with 25 keys on a rioting estate, lol I found summerhouse to be the more realistic of the two, but topboy had it's moments
Summerhouse was more realistic story wise, because it had much smaller scale, but acting and production wise, Netflix was understandably more realistic.
the netflix top boy has a much bigger budget and time frame which gives it plently of advantages however, summerhouse is much more gritty, has an edge of realism and some relatibility partly due to the time it was made, therefore not everything is flashy like in the netflix series
Honestly, I loved both the Channel 4 and Netflix versions. I loved the grittiness of the original show and was delighted to hear it would continue on Netflix. They did an excellent job of honouring the early seasons, brining an added level of polish and sharpness. The show as a whole delivered some pretty harrowing scenes - the fate of Jason and Attica stick in my mind - but also warmer moments which balanced it all out. The final season also felt like the right time to call it a day.
I still like both, and to be honest the only thing that changed (at least from what I noticed) is that top boy had more violence, and shootouts, which makes sense, given the fact they move up the ladder, which generally speaking means more violence, but that's why I think it works.... At the end of the day, it's all just personal opinion anyway, like what you like, that's what I say.
Summerhouse is just better even the atmosphere was ten times darker then the Netflix one especially the fact that majority of the victims in og summerhouse most of the victims were full on children and focused more on the grooming into gangs rather then just the warfare but I do think the characters in summerhouse were less fleshed out
Ra'Nell was a good character, it was good to show the other side of boys like him avoiding joining the drugs world. what I have seen in life. Top Boy is a great show, I do wish the other things were answered and more eps for the last season.
@@BrainPilot don't get me wrong I was glad that netflix continued the story I just think they should have stuck to the format that channel 4 had laid out for the show. For me, the highlights of the netlix series was Jem, Jason, Tasha and Jermaine... all the things that tied it to the Summerhouse series. The ending wasn't terrible, but some of the plot and the acting just didn't feel genuine. Like Jaq stealing Sully and Dushanes work just to give it back, didn't make any sense. Also the rioting storyline just felt forced to me... just wasn't necessary. Thanks for the reply by the way, love the channel.
The music score, the instrumental in summerhouse version was impacting to the story narrative and was a great layer. But netflix top boy is what became my personality. I am the top boy of this suburb.
Summerhouse also had fleshed out characters with their own arch outside Sully and Dushane, while they were the full leads in the Netflix series used others as extras. No idea what this video was talk g about. Also Dushane didn’t manage to directly get Jamie sent down, Jamie’s brother got sent down and he turned himself in to save his brother so Jaimie actually won on the streets
Well that's the point he knew he would not let his brother go down for it. Hence why....... And he ain't win Tbf if he got bodied. Plus it was snakey of Jamie to kill kit that was his best friend. He rid for Jamie...
@@LELABTV What you talk g about, Dushane tried to set up Jamie but the kid accidentally set up his brother. How would Dushane know what he would do. Jaimie might have killed him and Sully first and then hand himself in. He just got lucky. The idea only works on TV anyway. If Jaimie brothers testified I. What happened no way that kid was not gonna crack and expose Dushane I. Cross examination, and Dushane was a bigger target for the police. The plot had to go against reality to enable Dushane to win, which is bad writing
@@hm-tr2lh how did he loose if Dushane had to run to the police, Jaimie could have even killed him when he came out but the plot rescued Dushane and Sillh again
We need a series on the events of what happened in between summerhouse and netflix top boy, like how sully ended up in jail, the story of modie, what happened to ranell and the supposed peak dushane and sully had hit that dushane had been talking about in one of the first episodes of top boy netflix
summerhouse was my childhood honestly summer house was more brutal and more relatable dushane is the true top boy summer house man rescued sully non stop and called the shots top boy netflix was more tame but also amazing its hard to choose from id say netflix story was so much better but summer house would go higher lengths in terms of brutal viewing the death of micheal says enough but tbh im gonna miss top boy man it was seeming get better every season sad to see it come to an end so early
Depends what you want if you want a action packed show for entertainment then Netflix top boy is better but if you want a more realistic perspective then summerhouse wins .
If you watched summer house when it originally came out there’s no chance you rate the Netflix version overall better. Funny thing is rating wise it actually goes in order being summer 1-2 then Netflix season 1 being the best seasons the 4 was okay and the final was a joke. Sully should of died deshane should of gone prison
Summerhouse had the better soundtrack for sure. Ghostpoet blessed the first series with his eerie beats that just fit the tone of Summerhouse gritty and dark.
Summer house for me love the Netflix one but summer house is so much more gritty. I would compare summer house to kidulthood extreme gritty and dark but the Netflix one i would compare it to adulthood with it being a bit more dramatic
Summerhouse is a fast paced gritty thriller looking at community problems, whilst Top Boy is digitalised and extended in character development and themes. I think I prefer Netflix vision but Summerhouse season will always stand as a documentary
I like Summerhouse because before Netflix took it over it was on Amazon Prime years ago that's how I was able to watch it was a dark gritty UK gangland drama vibe like the show Luther with Idris Elba (which was on Prime too) but Top Boy on Netflix pretty much bought everything together full circle
Summerhouse. Way better. After that the next season was great too but after that one .... to many story lines, like who gives a fck about Shelly's shop and that bs of a twist from her past. That Liverpool thing was cringe too. And final season was too short. Kano was great tho! But again, what's with that riot? Oh Shelly want to expand oh that Drizes BM being a voice of people was ..... LOL. Aaron wasn't there, no lizzie, no police detectives that was after Dushane the whole time.
They dropped the ball with the last season... Summerhouse all the way..Its honestly as if I wasn't even looking at Dushane on screen i truly couldnt believe how crap it was..
I think the big difference is 4 episodes instead of 10. The final season could have been stretched out alot more and I’m really not sure why it was cut short
Summerhouse any day. I’m 27 now and believe it or not I was 13 when summerhouse came out. The reason why it’s better for me is cause I can relate to it more. I never grew up in London but I grew up in a small town, in a rough, deprived area on a council estate in Greater Manchester. Cause it was a poor area there was a lot of crime like stabbings and shootings (mostly stabbing) and it was the mid 2000s when a lot of race wars were kicking off between Pakistani kids and white kids. Like Asian lads and white lads were basically scrapping on the estate every day (to be honest I miss those days). Meanwhile in Top boy you have low level street dealers going international making millions, laundering millions and living in luxury houses. Also the mafia is totally unrealistic. You wouldn’t have professional full time criminals operating in shitholes like London. Also summerhouse is more gritty and focuses more on community crime.
Something I love about the show is how we’re watching one evil vs another with regards to Dushane, Sully, the Irish, Curtis, Vincent etc but with a shade of innocence with Jamie to a degree, Ra’nell
The both was the best for me 🤷🏾♀️ all that matter was that the same characters Sully and Daushane was still there ….🤷🏾♀️because without them there wouldn’t be a TOP BOY
I wish more of the inner streets of London were captured and more of the music battles. Like I think Tia could have played more in character. Like how this would have affected her to bring about the stuggles of a young black girl. And how Dushane and Sully could have found ways to protect her. Still lovey Topboy family sweardown🎉❤🎉
I really liked the original series. The netflix reboot was great, still going through season 4, it's nice to have a continuation to the story, but the original felt more worked, well planned, even if the budgets might've been lower. I recommend starting with the original and following it up with the netflix series.
Summerhouse. This series was more humbling and a higher presence for the want and need of goodness. Topboy embraces the death of man too easily. There is little to no resistance to the lifestyle that many of us want away from. I think with more insightful writing they could have brought that balance with grace. It lost meaning.
Its all one story. Not 2 separate shows. Shot on a she string, the first 2 seasons were like a pilot season totalling 8 episode. Channel 4 weren't interested in renewing it as the viewing figures weren't great. The show sat on a dusty shelf for 5 yrs, but somehow the creators never gave up and bagged themselves 3 seasons with Netflix.
I usually respect you reviews but this is so one sided your comparing a series that got 8episodes to a series that got 24 straight away you can’t really do that, two series had completely opposite budgets and then yav just talked out ya arse in the actual comparison.
If u say anything other than Summerhouse then I’ve no time for u. Summerhouse was hard, emotional, and just bloody awesome…..that’s where we all fell in love with the show and its characters…..
there was also likes in summerhouse cuz my fav summerhouse characters were: Mike, kamale, rafe, naveah, but my Most favs were Gem and Chantell, I was hoping they could be together or smt
Summer house was realistic and gritty, although i think the top boy Netflix series 1 was the best of the lot. Netflix is obviously more slick, but Summerhouse set the pace man. Tough call.
The character development was much better once it arrived on Netflix. The acting was better as well, but that is to be expected with more experience under their belts by then!
Ppl that grew up in urban areas in London will say summerhouse because it was realistic. The stuff we saw on summerhouse we was seeing on our estate or school. I knew guys from school like gem who got forced to go country to trap. Netflix became too woke. This show is about trapping we don’t care about ppl getting sent to Rwanda. Also the scene when Stefan and dris daughter go buy coffee from a white owned shop for middle class ppl for £7.50 was just dumb. No black kid from ends is going to a gentrified coffee shop to buy a drink for £7.50. Even the scene when jaq for beaten up for being gay. They try to be woke. Netflix was shit
Summerhouse is better its more realistic an gritty the only things i would add from the netflix show are probably Jaqs, and the kids are better in the netflix version. The first series on Netflix is a straight copy of the season in the wire when Barksdale comes out of jail an goes to war with Marlo,Dushane being Avon an Jamie being Marlo, culminating in the prison scene which was a direct homage to the scene where Marlo tries to meet the plug but finds Avon there. Not very original at all. Summerhouse has a lower budget but a superior show
8 episodes Vs 24 episodes. Summerhouse was never going to come out with a W. Everything you complement the netflix season for is a lot harder for summerhouse to compete with in 8 episodes
I mean not really. I think the 4 episodes in the earlier season worked in that the story was concentrated and there were no dead spots unless you didn't like a character. The dialogue was also superior which he skipped. The Netflix series all have dead space and extreme padding to the episodes cuz at first they had to hit 10 episodes so they stretched a shorter story to fit. I think he's right about the side characters, but I don't think they were done well in the Netflix seasons I just think there was more of them. Dushanes female lawyer, Jason, that crazy white boy, kamali, and rafe were much more interesting characters they just don't get drawn out cliche sob stories that people mistake for good characters. There's not that much to jaq keiron modie cam or even Jamie besides a cliche sob story. He's not very witty or interesting imo. The only thing the new seasons has over summerhouse is fashion. He said the camera work in the Netflix season was better but there is no shot in top boy better than when dushane and sully are stalking kamalis cousin in the railway with the ominous music
Summerhouse was good and must say they did a great job with a much smaller budget. Series 1 & 2 on Top Boy were superb. Personally loved the overseas stuff as it showed Dushane's progression as the top boy. I liked the Sully rescue story and he then taking care of Spain. Jamie's death provided a dramatic ending but he was a loss in series 3. Series 3 was largely a big let down. Unexplained stories, good characters missing and existing ones showing no consistency in character. Dushane becomes way too erratic, the Lizzie stealing his money story didn't work. Sully taking the reigns as top boy and sorting out the Irish was the highlight. It just descended into a farce.
I just looked at summer house & netflix as the same. A continuation. It was. Just different seasons come with different stories & characters like any show
Would much rather have seen show go on, but Stef should’ve gone properly heavy in the streets would have liked for him and the fields lot to have gone to war with the summerhouse crew after the shooting of Jamie, and seen him become the biggest monster. He had all the reasons to turn into a savage, much harsher background than Jamie now, Ats dying when he was maybe 15 then Jamie and Kit dying, and his parents already gone it would make sense that he would be desensitized enough to death, to become the biggest killer.
The problem with the netflix series is thats its stupidly over the top, I almost dropped it when ATs went to Manchester with them cartoonishley evil dealers it was so stupid
Overall I prefer summerhouse. It had more grit, didn’t feel over the top, and all the big moments felt impactful. Netflix top boy had great moments but each season had something that felt underdeveloped or pointless.
im so pressed it had to end with BOTH of them dying cause it came such such a long way since 2011 summerhouse real stupid to kill of both main characters and of those deaths being a mystery to
Summerhouse felt real and gritty, the netflix version is fake with a lesbian couple playing happy families and the Jaq character is so unconvincing both in writing and acting 😅
