i see that most times you don't go for cities scared of being targeted, but with 2 early cities you produce so much resources that it's irrelevant (at least, when i get 2 cities early in the game the rest can't stop me)...

Higher up, it really matters because if you pace too hard the board blocks your critical tiles. Not to mention, he generally does this when he plays OWS, and buying development cards is generally considered the better move than an early 2nd city because it can be both defensive (knights), helps you build to your win condition, and can be offensive/efficient too (YOP, RB, Mono)

His 9 got solo blocked anyway. Having the city would allow way more sheep production as port fuel @@mehulsingla6539

He's also vulnerable with only one wheat spot. So it's important for him to get to the sheep port to process the extra sheep into wheat before second city. Also, it's dependent on the other army competition, if they start popping, you gotta start popping or they get out ahead and also slow your production down by blocking you on critical resources.

For some reason, I've never been more confused watching Dylighted play a game before. All of the decisions were so weird. Didn't match the productions and ports.

I wish comments would be accompanied by personal rank or any metric that would allow me to discern whether there is validity to criticisms. I don't play Catan, so I don't know if the criticisms are coming from elite players (online or over board) or from plebs.
@JohnSmithEx
@JohnSmithEx 11 месяцев назад
This is not gonna happen any time soon, if ever. For now your best bet probably is to obtain personal experience, by playing some online Catan games. This will give you a rough idea if the criticisms are valid, and to what extend.

@@killtiago ha ha! You make some good points. It's fun to watch other people playing Catan though, isn't it? 🙂
@jeshuaray374

@@killtiago I agree that individual game outcomes are heavily dependent on luck, but this is true for any game containing dice and/or card draw (rng). Knowing this, I'm not as concerned with singular outcomes, but the decisions made in-game that are made based on information gathered during game play. Whether that be opponent personalities, current board state, potential paths to victory, knowledge of others hands, etc. A good example is poker. Each hand is heavily dependent on the luck of the draw, but great players use every piece of information at their disposal to have an outcome that is slightly less rng dependent than their opponents, which again, is not evident over the course of a singular hand, or even 100, but a sample of 1000s prove they are playing more optimally than their opponents on average. This means there exist optimal decision trees. I think Catan is much more complex than poker in the sense that the types of information that are at your disposal are more various, and optimal decision making changes board to board. Maybe the inputs do make optimal decision making impossible to determine for a majority of cases. Certainly under the time constraints present in online Catan. However, there are definitely some decisions that have to be statistically correct, and those decisions are the only ones I'm interested in. Thank you for your response.
@JohnSmithEx
@JohnSmithEx 11 месяцев назад
@@jeshuaray374what do you mean exactly be "statistically correct"? For example let's say that we analyze 10,000 Catan games, and we find that statistically players who place their first settlement on ore have higher winning rate than players who place their first settlement on wood. Would you consider this as a definitive proof that placing your first settlement on ore is statistically correct? If yes, any top player could assure you that if you follow this rule, you are about to make some terrible "statistically correct" first settlement placements. If not, what could be a practical and specific example of a "statistically correct" decision?

@@killtiagoDylan doesn't have to achieve an extraordinary winning percentage in ranked games, or tournaments, to make a living of Catan. There is no monetary reward for being #1 in the world at the end of a season, and the money earned by winning cash tournaments are hardly enough for peanuts. Dylan might be able to make a living by streaming on Twitch, uploading popular RU-vid videos, and maybe coaching. Neither of these activities are particularly sensitive to his playing performance. As long as the streams are fun and the videos are entertaining, the viewers will keep coming. And the more drama, emotions, vehemence, bitterness etc during the games, the better. In case Dylan has a reason to show himself as an exceptionally successful player, there is always the old trick of selective publishing. I.e. uploading only the wins and keeping the loses for himself. I don't condone this practice, but hey, hardly anyone will notice. As for not being able to win if 3 other players hate you, this is true, and the solution is simple: don't be the guy who everyone hates. Find the nasty aspects of your personality that make you unpleasant as a person, and eliminate them. Not only your winning percentage will raise, but you might also become a better person. Dylan has always been a charming personality, speaks politely to his opponents, doesn't hold grudges, and makes you feel nice after the game whether you win or lose. D.Drew not so much. He tries to sound friendly by putting the word "brother" in every sentence, but as soon as the game starts going the wrong way he shows his true colors. He is fast at accusing his opponents for his own failures, never accepting personal responsibility about anything. Instead of reflecting on his play and thinking how he could do better, he tries to change the whole world (by table-talking the audience) so that the next time the world hands him the win that (he thinks that) he deserves. I can't say how his attitude might affect his ability to make a living of Catan, but if he can't, then it won't be Catan's fault.

@kirillbolshacov5590
@kirillbolshacov5590 11 месяцев назад
@JohnSmithEx sure: 1. Not building a city on the 2 sheep tiles when he had a sheep port and focussing on pure luck with buying devs early on 2. Focussing solely on one player when black was clearly leading 3. Lack of any proper politics inside the game: he makes a deal with orange and robs him the next move. He agrees to trade one resource and then offers another resource I can rewatch it and give you more examples. Overall, feels rushed and unattentive. He can definitely do better
@JohnSmithEx
@JohnSmithEx 11 месяцев назад
@@kirillbolshacov5590 1. Dylan's game plan was to take the army, not build roads and settlements. What would Dylan do with the extra sheep? Trade it 2:1 for ore? In that case why not build the city directly on the ore spot, as he did, and get the ore simply 1:1? 2. Black was leading in visible points, but Orange was closer to the win with the army potential and hidden VPs. Eventually Orange won the game, so why are you suggesting that Dylan should block Orange less? 3. I am not convinced that changing the politics and keeping everything else the same (the unlucky double 7-out and the unlucky dev cards) would bring Dylan closer to victory. Being nice, honest and consistent doesn't necessarily translate to victories in top-level ranked Catan.
@kirillbolshacov5590
@kirillbolshacov5590 11 месяцев назад
@JohnSmithEx 1. Having 2 cities would provide him with a huuuge boost for resources. + he wouldn't solely rely on 11 for sheep, which hurt him a couple of times. I'm not saying he should have built the city there first. Just build it instead of 2 devs 2. Dylan's sole focus on him was still a mistake imo 3. You can't expect people to not get emotional when you literally break the agreements you made multiple times with them. I can agree with lying to gain an advantage at the end of the game, but making it your policy from the very start will lead to people solo blocking you or people working against you Like I said, overall just an abnormally weird game by Dylan. He is capable of better play and if he wants to reach top 1, he needs to focus on every game
@JohnSmithEx
@JohnSmithEx 11 месяцев назад
@@kirillbolshacov5590 1. Ah, I misunderstood. I thought that you criticized Dylan's first city choice. Regarding the second city, it is generally agreed among the top Catan players that a second city is less valuable than two devs. By building the second city, Dylan would be left too far behind in the army race. 2. Why? Ignoring politics, solely from a stop-the-leader perspective, focusing on Orange was justified simply by the outcome of the game. 3. Getting emotional means switching your goal from trying to win, to preventing someone else from winning. Orange certainly didn't switch goals, as evident by winning the game. To give credit where credit's due, Orange played masterfully the "I am emotional" card to their advantage. I think that your opinion is result-oriented. If Dylan was a bit luckier and had won the game, you might had a different opinion about his play.
