Having produced and mixed music for over 17 years and by helping my students out with their mixes, I've seen all the common mistakes people make and that I did myself when I first started.
Today I'm going to talk about my the top 5 mixing mistakes I see in the home studio and show you how to get a better mix simply by avoiding them. It doesn't matter in which DAW you work on or what style of music you're working on, avoiding these mistakes will help you with your future mixes.

Another great video, thanks. Been an amateur producer for decades, therefore making mistakes for decades! I am very pleased to discover that I have at least learned a few important things along the way.

Great high level tips to keep priorities in focus. Your format was interesting and engaging walking and talking and interviewing. I love the timing of the horn honk where needed in the interview too.

Always a pleasure. I would like to hear you talk more about the different approaches you discussed - live sound verses focused sound, folk sound versus electric sound...Thanks Chris

That's a really solid list of mistakes. I would like to add 2 more :) 1. Skipping gain staging: When you're a beginner it's easy to skip gain staging then hit the red lights and end up clipping. 2. Using presets: First, learn and understand how your plugins work then later you can use presets as a "starting point".

Hi Chris, great video with good mixing tips, and other good tips in peoples comments below as well. Your one guest goes on about referencing your mix! This is something that i never used to do do early on but now making an effort to implement into my workflow! The thing is, i find it difficult to find tracks that are really similar to mine; i produce orchestral music at the moment and i am going to admit my mistake here, i struggle to reference!!!!!!!!!! Any thoughts????

You can check some Spotify orchestral music playlists, that will give you an idea

Great tips. I think I will record in the evening, and mix in the morning. We are living in a noisy world.

hey christ, i just starting my home studio record 3 years ago. and iv'e been watching your video since then. my hardware is so simple, its very very simple. i have core i3 and never upgrade my 4gb ram and also use cubase 5 till now. i hope that is not my major problem. i use Behringer Xenyx 802usb as my soundcard. i directly put the guitar and everyting on that mixer, so i don't use any amplifier to get the sound because i don't have a good recording room. all the expensive thing that i have a courage and believe that I will become like you one day. anyway.. my problem is why i can't get better sound when i record a electric guitar, because i got a lot of noise, like a big noise, sometimes make me crazy.no matter if i use a guitar effect plugin or effect pedal. can i get some tips for me to do. that means a lot to me. thanks christ :)

also still in Cubase 5 here too. Actually Cubase 5 Studio. :) Its all about the skills, not the tools.

How "flat" should a mix be? Because I, like a lot of people, like the "smiley face" EQ but I might be building that into my mixes too much. So when I play it on a system where I already have a smiley face EQ setting it will be overkill.
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 5 лет назад
I love a mix that is well balanced across the frequency spectrum. Not necessary flat cause that will depend on the style of music you're mixing. Sometimes a darker mix will sound balanced and sometimes a bit brighter will sound balanced. The problem with the Smiley face is that you're focusing too much on getting rid of the mid-range which can play against you. If you want to know if you're in the ball game, reference your mix with good sounded music.

Yeah, got to go with Bredo. Strangely enough, for a mix tutorial, it's the mix of your background music that is particularly annoying. Sounds like somebody is sitting at my feet rhythmically popping bubble wrap.
