Yeah yeah…my audio was all over the place. Sorry about that.
This is a cool technique I learned for starting fires in a wood stove, so I thought I’d pass it along. You get brownie points if you end up watching the whole thing, lol, because it’s a longer one.

I thought to check out your page and this was the first video that caught my eye remembering the hippies that came to Alaska in their back to the land movement in the 70's. One of the things that made me popular among them was my ability to always get a wood stove fired up. You have a very pleasant manner and I'll be watching more of your videos.

Hi Milkmaid, if you throw a handful of salt with iodine in it, it keeps the creosote from building inside the pipe. Every 10 or 15 fires worked for me. Nice video lady 👍😀

Not bad. I’ve done it the other way all my life. Works for me. There’s no wrong way unless the fire goes out. We don’t use soft woods in our stove though. Soft woods creosote up your chimney faster. Not a problem as long as you keep an eye on it. Chimney fires aren’t anything to mess around with. Nice job on the fire. 👍👍

I’ve done it the old way forever myself but I tried the top down the other day and it works great, no smoke comes out it gets the draft moving quicker. Depending on your stove I put two pieces of kindling on the bottom to lift the logs up for air movement then a little bit of kindling big to small and a little bit of brown paper bag, then lite it and your done. She’s using a little more kindling than you need but try it, I was skeptical too but now it’s the only way I start a fire.
@GainsMarathon
@GainsMarathon 8 месяцев назад
This is a misconception. Any wood whether soft or hard can build creosote in your chimney if the wood is not properly seasoned. Any wood soft/hard as long as its fully seasoned, will work. The only difference is soft wood doesn't get as hot as hard wood and burns much faster.
@PaEMT_FF9
@PaEMT_FF9 2 года назад
Interesting concept that I’ve used in a similar manner when I have a cold flu & chimney and I’m having difficulty getting the coal stove started. If you build a bottom up fire, just don’t let your ash stick out. 🤣

I use top down fire start because it makes less smoke. I also burn a lot of well seasoned eastern white pine. It's fine to burn as long as it is well seasoned. Major disadvantage is how fast it burns -you end up loading the stove a lot. Helps me save my good wood for over night burn and colder weather. In warmer weather the pine is good for a short burn just to take the chill off. I also have an awful lot of it so I use it as much as I can. Get some stove gloves so you don't roast your hands ! :-)

My way which i fin very effective is to put all the small stuff on bottom building it up the whole way to the top. I pack sheets of newspapers into the ash tray box at least 6 sheets. I lights it, the draw off the chimney really sets them on fire, the flames go through the grate and instantly there is flames climbing through all the timber. Great video though.

This is really pointless . the chimney will heat up regardless of the position of the starter and kindling. if smoke is an issue in the traditional method, then simply close the glass door , open the air inlets under the box and the smoke can't enter the room . The most important thing to remember is that heat RISES . in the tradional method your stove will heat up much faster becuse of this . The starter on the bottom ignites the kindling and the kindling ignites the logs . this all happens simultaneously because each layer above the starter is quickly influenced by the rising flame below, thus heating the stove way faster than the top down method . to illustrate this , strike a large kitchen match in one hand .with the other hand hold a piece of dry paper about 3/4 of an inch under the match . the paper will not ignite . now hold the paper the same distance ABOVE the flame and the paper will immediately ignite . this is exactly what is taking place in the stove . with the top down method you will have to wait much longer before your logs are fully engulfed in fire . one youtuber bragged that with the top down method his logs were fully ablaze in FORTY minutes !! in my wood stove using the traditional method , the logs are fully ignited in less than two minutes . 😂 i really do;t know how this top down silliness caught on but it is nuts .
