I remember years ago my dad left the door cracked open like that after he loaded up the stove with some small chunks of sugar maple. Phone rang and he got distracted, he remembered and came back about 20 minutes later and the chimney flange on the stove was cherry red and the flue temperature was over 1000F. He never got distracted again after that haha
1000°!? Wow that is intense. The stove at my cabin is really draughty and glows red when I overdo it - always extra careful if I see this to dial it down a bit
Thank you for sharing and caring I really appreciate your positive vibes My log stove is my moral life line I love to sit and watch the burn You are a great guy with great moral beliefs and warm heart
Wood stove cookin' is some of the best eatin' I've ever had! Stoves are our only heat source at my family place too, and I love how wood heat just soaks right thru yer bones. Plus, it gives me an excuse to go rippin with my dad and our power saws in the woods! Lots of dead ash trees the last few years in these parts. Love, Andrewski✊
Buckin' do you know how much I felt the warmth radiating from your home through this video? And the way you advised us was so humble and wise. Thank you 🙏
This is an awesome video. What a neato life you have. The bunker is like a museum and very well organized. You are also a very good teacher and the most fun we had was sittin around the woodstove in Yellowpoint laughing our you know what off, playing nose songs. Good memories.
Great tips once again Buckin I lost power for 3 days around Christmas we cooked everything on the old Vermont castings. I will never be without my wood stove hope your shoulder gets better soon.
I have had fire places, stove inserts, and stand alone wood stoves, over the years, and you my friend have hit the nail on its head! I have 2 stoves in the house as we speak, when we were without power for 3 weeks after hurricane Sandy, we had heat and were able to cook from the stove! I will never be without one again! And yes I have been to the court house to keep them! And I firmly believe that every house should have one regardless of location! Just think about how much easier Texas would have had it a few years back, when the they got hit with that extreme cold front for a few weeks! While I primarily burn wood, I have also placed oil lamps inside the burn box to help bring a little heat and maintain a draft ( plus it helps to get rid of the cooking oils!
I just love it when you share your family with us❤All the thumbs UP! Thanks Billy Ray!! I know you’ll feel better soon💪looking forward to seeing you in the trees again👍
Your wood-stove baffles look very similar to mine. Prayers continue for a full recovery on your shoulder. Enjoy some relaxing time with your family. 🙏♥️
May the blessings of quick healing find you and your family ,and may your kind words and ways continue to spread positive vibes throughout the world, you're making a difference for so Many Buckin, from the heart, we appreciate ya's brother.
We heated our old house with wood. Now I would like to do the same in the new house. You have a good looking stove and great advice! Keep up the great videos and hope to see that hot Mac 10-10 run again! Stay warm and safe!
I have the same wood stove. But I have the door on the side also. Really nice stove. Love how the soapstone holds the heat even when the flame dies out.
So amazing seeing the kids so young and just like I said on the live your still the same man today as then just older and wiser!! Love ya buckim family!
WOW Buckin that was an awesome video!! Again I learned alot! We had a wood burning stove as a kid. We even burned coal in it. Now everything is natural gas or electric. I miss those days! Its funny I even have a scare above my butt where I got to close to the stove when I was young!🤗🤗🤣🤣 Thank you Buckin for all your awesome Videos!!👍🏻 I
Just want to thank you for all those videos. I learned a ton of things and always use them . Always think about you when i fall trees. I think you are a good man, a good father, a good husband too and certainly a good friend. Cause you are a real good human (even if a good drummer ;-) ). love you Billy ; thanks for spending all that time sharing with us.
We heat our house with a wood cookstove. Nothing beats it. Cook most meals on it when it's cold. Only wish it had a window on the fire box. Heal up, buddy! Cheers from Virginia.
Congrats on your 3rd year. A very noble undertaking. My third year in the hollow, fully on grid, cars pass by 24/7 going 35 to 45 mph. Money is disappearing to the electric, gas, water companies. Real estate taxes, school taxes, county taxes are draining the meager stash of money that i squirreled away. But hey... there is a beautiful hill of trees across the road, and there is a very steep hill of trees behind the house/shack. Perfect in a way 😉 Imperfect in other ways. I strive for perfection in many things like getting the bolt to fit perfectly. But when things break i fix them the best i can which is usually never perfect. Satisfaction comes in all colors. ✅♻️🪘❄️🪵🪓
I've found, at least at my house, on those "downdraft" days , instead of cracking a window as usual I'll open an outside door wide open. Evens things out and gets the draft going.
This is great! I’m sitting here in front of my glassed fireplace on a cold wet day with my feet by a roaring fire while watching a BBR video of about wood fire! I spent some time in a log cabin in northern Minnesota with no electricity and only wood stove for heat and cooking. Deer hunting during the day and -20f at night.
We live close to the beach on the ca/or border and we have a older style wood stove but man that thing cranks. 8' away is a 18000 btu heat pump and the wood stove is about 10 time more powerful. One of our funnest things we do is getting firewood and I love dropping trees, thanks Buckin for the tips.
I often have to resplit wood that I buy, because it's too big and burns too slow. When I split it, I split it small. Knotty chunks, crotches, etc I'll leave big and use for base logs, but I prefer the fuel pieces to be small. It just makes for a better burn. I'm blessed with a wide variety of species, so I can vary the burn by choosing what species to put on. Want it slower? Throw on the oak, or Beech, or locust. Want things to brighten up? Add some soft maple, poplar, or spruce. Imo, Ash and Sugar Maple are just about right. Cherry, walnut, and birch are right in the middle of the road, too. I burn outdoors, but placement works just like you showed us there, too. Even though it's out in the open air, you still need airspace in between pieces. Cleaning out the ashes regularly helps too- so air can get underneath it.
Yeah the odd pieces (crotches that didn't split, weird cuts, short cuts that won't stack, any cookies, etc...) you get with a delivery I put aside and I either burn first just because they're awkward to deal with or I save them for one last odd piece to throw in at night before I go to bed. If you stack using holzhausens then these are great to throw into the middle of the circle.
Really enjoyed this informational AND personal video…so sweet to see the kids when they were little 🥰 I would love to see a wood-stove cooking video with you and Wendy, now that would be fun! Hoping you’re both feeling 💯 percent very soon🙏🏼 I missed the live feed, but watched it later, I think it would be exciting for Rita to help with the channel!😊👍
I love the throw back video of Rita and Morgan makes me think of my little boy and girl them proud dad moments are so cherrishable love ya brother get well soon
Great video, I have been using alot of the same techniques you demonstrated in your video for years with our stoves. We have 2 stoves, a Vermont Castings in the house and a Conastoga in the garage. power goes out frequently here so wouldn't be with out them. last time the power was out for 6 days. We fall buck and split all our own wood. Glad yo \uare on the mend now. enjoyed that video very much . Stay Strong buddy !!
Love it, cook on my wood stoves all the time, I have a old timberline wood stove insert in the old fire place, and a thermo control 500 wood boiler in the basement, mild winter here in eastern NY so far, I’m about three hours east from Ironhorse, but we’re gonna get pretty cold the next few days! Stay warm friends we’re ever you are,
Sounds like you need to do one every year. I’m struggling with the stove temp. I keep the flue temp around 400 but the stove stays in that too hot zone to activate the catalyst.
Spot on re the log size! I must admit I've always marvelled at the size of some of your logs out there. I'm in Norway and I need my wood a bit smaller. Of course a few bigger logs are great for later, once the fire has a good bed, but most of it I like up to 4" or so. Best thing I recon is to get the wood in the house early. We have a two part store next to the fire, so the wood is in the house at least 2/3 days before burning. Stay well buddy 🙂
I know. I’m 74, grew up in a stone farm house, wood burning stove in kitchen, wood/coal furnace in cellar, steam radiators. Split a lot of wood growing up. My dad was frugal with the coal. I’ve never regretted it.
Thanks for the tips. Back in the 70s and 80s my dad pretty much taught us how to run wood burner. He would bring home coal from the mine to help the heat and hold fire overnight. I just had to relearn how to burn wood because woodstoves are different. The larger pieces chokes off air so I have to split it again to sizes that I know will work. My neighbor stopped by yesterday, and he complimented me on how nice it felt in room. Thanks again for the tips.
Great video Billy really helpful tips and tricks as always. I always try keep a 75% stock of dry wood (hardwood/softwood) 10% small bits and 15% damp ish wood for over night burning. Always helps me keep fire going and runs our whole house heat and hot water. 🏴👍
I do a similar thing when stacking. 10 faces of 2 year old wood, one face of year old, still a bit damp at 18 %, and a couple of faces of three year old. Feeding the dragon for over 40 years now and that fellas always hungry. Mix as nessary to get the heat level you need.
haha, yes, I love cooking on the top plate aswell!! use to live like that when I had my burner. ye, they wanna take it all away because they say CO2 emissions. personally I find it tough living without a wood burner because it's a way of life. I was born and raised like that. take it easy buddy! your in healing mode! X
Great to see the youngsters... Hogan " ...quit throwing chunks of wood at your sister... Hogan and Rita are the true children of the new millennium. 💚🌲🎶🌠 Buckin and Wendy are our favorite parental units. 😂👍♻️💞🪶
BILLY i feel this is my most loved video .i aint been here long .means a lot u showing ur kids to us all .made me have a wee tear my friend .godbless stuart.
G'day Buckin, that overcast low pressure has the same effect on our wood heater it doesn't matter where you are or what you burn it slows the draw for sure 👍.
Buckin, I love your perspective. "We had the opportunity to cook on our wood stove when the power went out." Most people would say "We HAD TO cook on our stove cuz we had no power!" That's a little example of why we love you!
Meanwhile, I CHOSE to cook on my wood stove, despite having power. Stews in a cast-iron pot on top, potatoes wrapped in foil in the coals, even roasted some meat on skewers suspended in the stove itself - some of the nicest meat actually!
I have never seen a man so adamant about calling people friends and one of the nicest people in the world then this guy. The guy that could tear me in half with bare hands above his head.
Howdy Brother Billy Ray, I gotta say that vintage footage is phenomenal, especially seeing little Hogan & sweet little Rita! Love ya, Bless’ns to You and Your Family, Tedd
@@ishure8849 Birthday? Pffft, Please... Since I discovered The Fountain of Youth, I've never felt better!🤥 Doing quite well my friend, however it has been an extremely mild winter for the most part. How are things in your world? You must be getting close to catching up with me by now!😜 Bless'ns to ya, Tedd
I am glad you are feeling better brother. Don't forget, rest is important too. Rest is hard for some people to do just like hard work is difficult for others. Balance is the key. Right?
I've got a wood stove insert, and it's the damndest thing. I can't find any information about it on the internet. The "floor" of the thing partially blocks the little intake vents, and it has a grate in it like a fireplace. But once you get it going it'll get the house hot. It was here when I bought the house.
I have a fireplace now but in my old house I had a wood stove and there is nothing like that heat she throws. Maybe I should say backing up close to a wood stove very nice.🙂
Great advice!! So yesterday l commented and said that "l assume everyone currently on the list for an axe would get one once they come out." I am not sure where the disconnect was between my brain and fingers but that was supposed to say, "l assume everyone currently on the list will NOT be getting one immediately after they are released. Do you have a rough estimate of how long the wait will be once they're become available?" (Like if l get on the list this week, l can expect to wait roughly x amount of time once they are released to get mine.) With quality, hand made, products it takes time to make them so l expect there too be a wait. I am looking forward to get one of these axes, and am thankful that you are putting in all the R&D before you sell something. That says a lot about your character! Keep up the good work, and hope you get feeling better soon!!
Hey buckin , I've been strictly wood for last 28 years . Don't even have a furnace or electric heaters in the house . Wouldn't have it any other way . I run my old Husqvarna 266 and my 61 love them and they never let me down . Nobody but me is allowed to touch them lol . Had them since new
I want all my wood packed as tight as possible. Burns longer that way. If I am starting a fire sure to get it going. But once it's hot I load it as tight as possible. I load North and South. Air goes between it fine and it burns from the glass back. My stove has a cat and burns that smoke. No problem keeping that stove hot or cool with just the air control. I leave my door closed after I first start it. Wood is usually split and stacked in the shed three (sometimes two) years before I burn it. Oh I see your saying if your struggling with a down draft and trying to get started .
Got an Enerzone stove (made in Canada 💪) that's got a slider vent so I can control airflow when it's sealed burns so hot sometimes singes my hair when loading more wood 🔥🥵
Buckin, I appreciate the tips. I just bought my first woodstove and have been supplementing my home heat with it. Question, I noticed you live in a ranch style home, do you have any tips to help circulate the heat?
You can also run the fan on your furnace to circulate the heat throughout the house. Set it to on instead of auto ! Good luck Sean it’s great beating up on the oil companies !
@@123gonow thank you for the tip but unfortunately I have forced hot water. I’ve been using some small fans and ceiling fans to help circulate the heat. Seems to be working okay but the far side of my house is still running on a separate zone with oil.
Fun game to play around the camp fire is fire chess...you try to make the fire burn hotter by either adding a piece of wood or moving the fire..everyone gets a turn and everyone wins
Since you are getting a bit older and have some injuries to recover from, maybe you can make yourself some wood boxes/bins that you can load into your Merc or Ford and stack into those and unload with your forklift, then unload into your woodshed and wham, bam...BBR is done for the year and only handled the wood 3 times instead of your 12 times before you burn it! Nothing wrong with some larger pieces of wood either...long burn and not overbearing with heat---gOOD TIPS on some of your motosierra cadena vids, but the side stuff can be redundant [straight shooting]. Keep kicking a$$!
I always wondered why in Canada and north Usa dont use stove's like here in Finland (tulikivi and nunnauuni)??? much more firewood preserving because they yeild warmth 1-3 days depending on the mass of the stove.
Funny… I watched this video last night. We are 12years 100% wood heat here in the GVRD and for the first time I had to preheat my flue with paper and kindling in my regency 2400 insert. Usually I just toss some sticks on the coal bed from the night before and it lights up in a few mins…there was really damp, cold, dense air outside this morning! really weird!
