Because you've identified why sliced drop shots don't work (difficult to be consistent, & this is my experience), and that the solution is to be very relaxed in grip, etc. This is a simple concept, but looked really effective. I'll practise 200x with a ball machine, but I now reckon I've got a new weapon to take on my opponents who spend their days on the baseline! thank you!

Hi Ian(nice tip btw) Could you please make a video about closed stance forehand VS open stance forehand. My coaches keep repeating me that the forehand has to be with a closed stace(I hit with open).

that's Ok if close to the net, say if the position is further back, then more forward effort is required to make it clear the net.

I'm going to go practice this w my daughter feeding each other balls. I never practice this shot, but try to do it in games......duh!!! 90% are short in the net. I think it's because I'm to worried about chopping at it and creating backspin. Thanks Ian for all your hard work and great videos. If your ever in FL. and want to learn to surf I'll have you up and riding first day, free lesson for ya bro!

If this helps and if you'd still like this info, I like to focus more on the apex of the ball's curve, where the highest point will be.If you keep it high then you get a much safer shot, and if you have soft hands and are good at applying backspin while keeping it light, you can make it just as deadly as a low drop shot.
@connorism69
@connorism69 5 лет назад
On the backhand side I find it easier to not be so stiff at the elbow, but to kind of punch forward at the ball, still with a modest rotation at the shoulder (a lesser movement relative to what you're doing). The punching motion with extension at the elbow naturally moves the racquet-face upward and imparts backspin on the ball, but making contact during the punching motion means a lot of the pace on the ball is very easily absorbed. This way you hardly even have to loosen your grip. What do you think of punching at the ball, especially when you're closer to the net (e.g., mid-court)?

Ian, how does someone hit the short angle close to the net drop shot? The one that looks like its coming off the head of the racket, while that head is facing down, touching the ground, it's SUPER sharp. It's a fitness shot...it surprises the opponent forces the scramble... I need that shot! Can we get a video on that, please?

How to hit a running drop shot, for both backhand and forhand. Also need the angle of placement ??
@aidankeefe6892

One of the shots I use for tennis is this sort of thing for forehand it spins back and when it hits the court it rolls off almost no bounce or and stay with in two feet at the very most so it hit almost with a parallel landing on the ground the opponent in my experience as a high school varsity player the opponent will not be able to hit it with nearly as much power for the easy shot to the other side
@sivasubramanianvivekananda1656
Which one would be better and more effective on the opponent. Slice or drop shot
@PrinceofTennis89

Hey Ian, very nice tip which makes sense would you also suggest that when we do a drop shot, our momentum is still moving forward toward the net? if that makes sense? i guess in other words, should we be stepping into the drop shot?
@EssentialTennis
@EssentialTennis 10 лет назад
Well, the majority of the time that it makes tactical sense to hit a drop shot you'll be moving forward inside the baseline anyway. Trying to hit a drop shot from a deep position in the court or while retreating is definitely recommended in general, but that doesn't mean it can't still be successful. So, do you nee to "step into the shot"? No, definitely not. But will you typically be moving forward anyway? Very often, yes.

I have a new question concerning open stance & hip pain. I recently switched from closed stance to open stance after learning that's the proper stance to play modern forehand. Is that the price to pay or am I doing it (open stance forehand) wrong?
@PonchoNugen
@PonchoNugen 10 лет назад
Open stance is the last option, always try to move your feet (many little step) at all time so you can turned sideway (much less chances for hip pain).

Ian which grip would you use for a forehand dropshot? Would you stick to your main one or should you change to continental?
@EssentialTennis
@EssentialTennis 6 лет назад
Continental is definitely the way to go! Eastern forehand is possible, but definitely not as easy as continental. Anything past eastern forehand, forget about it. -Ian

@joefarah
@joefarah 10 лет назад
Ian, Wouldn't you say that playing with a full bed of copoly strings makes these touch shots pretty challenging. I feel like the ball jumps off the stringbed too fast on touch shots so getting the ball to land short is a challenge for me. That probably makes your tip even more essential to hitting a good dropper in order to control that jump off the stringbed.
@dkangan
@dkangan 10 лет назад
If you don't mind me jumping in, your quesiton makes me wonder first how firmly you are gripping the racket on those shots and second how much swing you are giving it. It is very easy to put too much behind the ball, especially when moving forward. But if the grip is too firm, you won't take enough pace off the ball.
@user-be5qg7mr1s

No, you can do anything with full poly if not more. I dropshot all the time on both sides effectively

Ehin... Wow I am embarrassed to say that I am a 3.5 level player that's been playing two years, I love hitting drop shots and hit some good ones but probably win 30 percent of points that I try it on due to swinging so aggressively and hitting to long or out of the side lines. I will try softning up and simplifying my stroke like you said. Kinda like a finesse feel volley right? I'll try it next time I get to play and let everyone know how it works. Thanks alot for your tip!!!!!!
@EssentialTennis
@EssentialTennis 6 лет назад
Very similar feel and concept to the volley, yes! Highly recommend getting some practice time with a ball machine so you can freely experiment. Do you have access to a ball machine?

ian what is the diference between drop shot and a slice
@EssentialTennis
@EssentialTennis 9 лет назад
Robbie Sheinis Zmiri The main differences are in the direction of swing and angle of the strings at contact. On a drop shot the racquet should fall quite a bit more from high to low compared to a slice, and the strings should be quite a bit more open than on a slice.

Michael the naked eye is deceiving you. Roger Federer is applying incredible touch -- taking speed off the ball, catching it on his racket, and flinging it softly toward the target. The words 'hard' and 'drop shot' do not belong in the same paragraph.
