Common mate! 😅 I love what you do.. but i have to dissagree with you on this… Pickle ball is not a threat to tennis.. its easier to pickup PB and have a lot if fun with... no harm there…but tennis is not at risk because of popularity of pickleball- PB can exists without ppl viewing it as a threat to Tennis. USA Tennis is in the hands of the usta. It would be interesting if you interviewed a rep from the USTA and get their opinion and look at the numbers they work with. Im sure tennis is fine.
You don’t have to choose. I play both. Love the social aspect and yes laughter in pickleball. Gets relatives and friends together from all ages. Tennis I love the journey to becoming a better player. Really about conquering yourself sometimes
I think we need to be more supportive of Athletes and their mental health. I observed a Westlake High School tennis player who was one of the top upcoming players in Texas. He didn't talk much but he won his match against our best tennis player. What does that say? He's not meant for instructionsl videos. That's it.
For millions of years (??), humans and their ancestors used all natural products to make the items needed to survive and play. Using the entire animal which fed the person, was seen as a good thing and to keep waste to a minimum. We still strive to keep waste to a minimum in the use of animals, and people around the world have reduced their consumption of animal products which has reduced the need for the materials from animals, and synthetic materials were created to replace the natural products, however, the desire to reduce oil consumption is also reducing the market for synthetic materials as well, soon, no one will be wearing plant fibers and the cloth industry will also be eliminated, and humans will return to being naked animals roaming the wilds searching the planet for food the deem ethical to eat...
@@EssentialTennis That doesnt mean tennis is a non athletic sport. Pickleball is a non athletic sport just by its design. Like i said it has nothing whatsoever to do with tennis.
Absolutely brilliant and effective coaching oozing with detailed analysis and great positive energy. As always platinum content and production. Cheers and great weekend, M
Your analysis skips over a major point. The most important shot in tennis (the overhead serve) is also the most complex and hardest to learn. It's a huge obstacle to overcome and advance in the game. Most new tennis players quit before getting comfortable serving. The underhand Pickleball serve is the same as a ground stroke, so the skill threshold to start and advance is much lower and easier and far less discouraging.
I like the fact that Ian is giving us tennis bums a dose of "real talk." It's non of this mealy-mouthed USTA crap, which tries for some sort of "ecumenism" between the two sports. He's dead-on when he says, "zero-sum game." More pickleball equates to less tennis. Full stop. Further down in this comment thread, a European observes that PB is more of an American phenomenon -- that's true, as well. Here's the good news for tennis players -- tennis is about 600 years old as a sport (cf., the famous "tennis ball joke" at the beginning of Shakespeare's "Henry V", which basically kicks off the war between England and France). PB, like any other American "craze", will have a relatively short shelf-life -- like skateboarding, or surfing, say. These were sports that were dominant in the 90s . . . now, you barely see any kids riding a skateboard. A closer analogy might be the racquetball craze of the 80s. That sport, too, had a brief flash . . . and now they're taking RB courts down at all the facilities where I still play tennis.
Pickleball is only a thing and a potential threat in the USA. In the rest of the world, the threat is padel, where tennis court after tennis court and tennis hall after tennis hall is being transformed into padel courts and in for example the Netherlands, the end is not in sight yet. Many tennis players move over to padel or drop their tennis frequency. And to be fair, the occasional pickleball court here is filled with purely recreational players and housewives, while many really competitive tennis players move to padel. And I don't see that distinction changing soon. I see people watch pickleball youtube vids and start laughing, then they see padel vids and they go coool!
I always carry a can of unopened balls in my bag in case the match balls are regular Penn. I refuse to play with that trash. Straight out of the can they don’t bounce.
As long as we have the grand slams and star players, tennis will rule. Nobody saw a pickleball player and felt inspired to play. People see Alcaraz smashing winners and hoisting the French Open and want to hit their local court. They see the showmanship of Gael Monfils and they want to play like him. This will always make tennis unique. The stars are the greatest marketing product for tennis. They will ensure that it lives forever.
Pickleball has a much shorter learning curve than tennis. That is another reason for its growth. You can play Pickleball on your first day, not so in tennis. However, tennis offers a greater spectacle to watch. Pickleball matches are not engaging as a spectator.
