Top fashion trends for Fall-Winter 2023-2024 + how to wear them 

It seems similar because I did the pre-work for you, browsing all these shows and finding the overarching stories that connect them. But you could also name diverging examples (for instance in colors or shapes) that I didn’t mention because I don’t think they‘re „the“ thing to remember from this season. In other words, it’s still a subjective (although curated to be as objective as possible) opinion from me 😉

Because the details are different.

There are trend forecasters that designers look to.

There are hundreds of houses that participate in the official calendar of the fashion weeks across the 4 capitals of fashion. Each one of these houses have creative directors and hundreds of workers that help bring visions to life. Each one of these houses have imprints and each creative director comes from a different background and a different skill set. Mathematically, we end up with a legion of looks each season. I'm talking thousands of options, silhouettes, textures, color combinations and styling techniques. So how do we find the trends among hundreds of unique entries? We find the trends or the patterns through current global events, consumers and successful collections (and tributes occasionally). These three things determine the who decides trends question. How? Global conversations and events spark stories and theories, fashion as an art relies on storytelling heavily; for example: during Covid, many conversations emerged about the weird global situation and the fear that we lived, as a result "dystopian" aesthetics and anonymous face and body coverings made their way to the runway. Think of Balenciaga by Demna, the rise of black colors, big silhouettes and face coverings. Now, the global conversation is tied to the recession, people are de-influencing others on TikTok to not buy junk, others are changing jobs or coming back to offices after years of working from home and others are trying to invest more and more into quality items. All of these factors combined sparked the conversations about the "old money aesthetic", the quiet luxury and the "Sophia Richie" style. We're now seeing brands adhere to that more and more on the runways so the trend or the pattern we're seeing is neutral colors, good quality materials, minimalist but flattering cuts etc. And brands like Loro Piana, Goyard and the Row are under the radar more and more. Consumers and streetwear play a huge part on deciding the trends, for example: there's a trend on TikTok that's currently being consumed that is the "tube girl" trend. The trend is all about feeling confident and good about yourself and not caring about others" opinions, this trend is definitely going to open more conversations, and we'll definitely see it come to the runway very soon via models having more personality walks and via bold colors and aesthetics. Successful past collections also decide the trends. For example, in this season SS24 most runways featured Miuccia Prada's success with the recent Miu Miu and Prada collections, she started the balletcore trend, the flats and ballerinas trend and the mini skirt trend. I went through all the shows for the SS24 and Miuccia Prada was an inspiration to countless designers this season. Finally and rarely, fashion tributes decide the trends. Many fashion legends have left us very recently; Vivienne Westwood, Thierry Mugler, Jane Birkin... Naturally designers that were once mentored or got inspired by these legends will try to pay a tribute to these legends' legacies in their collections, they might pull archive successful looks and reintroduce them, they might bring back their style or reference their colors, silhouettes and textures. The tributes could become a trend. In the SS24 as an example Balenciaga and Miu Miu featured bags where practical daily items were coming out of the bag, I think that's a subtle Ode to the late Jane Birkin, a woman that was infamous for wearing down her Hermes Birkins and for not babysitting luxury but making it functional. I am also here for the same comment, LOL. Do note that a Duster will have a deep slit in the back so it will drape down the sides of the horse, rather than gathering up under or behind the wearer.

I wish people out walking or biking in my neighborhood embraced some neon or bright colors... So many in all dark colors with no lights or anything reflective. I have a bright red winter jacket that is pretty timeless looking and thankfully people in cars can also see me... Lol I can't walk fast so I need to be visible.

Interesting but hey, bit of a hassle to use, unless a clutch has a built in arm or wrist strap, don't you think? I have a few which I used to use for lunch breaks at the office instead of taking the giant shoulder bag I used to use for work. The couple without a wrist strap ended up going to the charity shop.

People were slimmer back then, too.

​@@Moluccan56true and I feel like it follows the Edwardian rule too. Back then when we think of edwardians having such tiny waist. Yeah they were only slightly thinner than the average woman is today. But they had built-in padding in their skirts and blouses to make their waist look even tiner. Same thing with the fifties instead of modifying their bodies like is the popular thing to do today to fit the beauty standard. They just added padding and flounces to their dresses and outfits to give themselves that silhouette. The tiny waist was an illusion for the most part. And I don't understand why that isn't popular today. We really need to bring that back. But I really think it's because most women don't want to dress modestly or be classy. They want to show off as much skin as possible in as skin tight dresses as possible. And they can only do that if they get plastic surgery to literally change their body. It's not healthy mentally. It's not even about giving off desperation when you're showing a lot of skin. It's about how that affects you mentally because you like to wear those outfits it makes you feel like your body has to look perfect so you look good in these outfits. We modify our bodies to fit the clothes. When we should be modifying the clothes to fit our bodies. This is what feminism has done for women. For every good thing feminist did there is a huge major drawback as a consequence. And this is the consequence of normalizing showing off your body to young girls

I do it frequently, alter my clothes that is. Key is to buy good quality garments. They last a long time and alterations are not that complicated as fashion evolves.

Actually they didn’t all have small waists in the 50’s either. It’s the proportions of the clothes that made the wearers look like they had hourglass figures. Padding on the top and bottom highlighted the waist. And crinolines, net skirts and or starch held out those massive skirts. Great tailoring could achieve the look for most women in a way that the fashionable figures of the 60’s were not so widely achievable. Tailoring… the fashionable woman’s best friend :-)

@@hopenield8234 I don't deny that tailoring can help, but I have found many articles about waists in the 50s, and they were definitely smaller for many reasons. One of the article says: Since the 1950’s, women’s bodies have ballooned in size. Back in the 1950’s the woman’s average waist size was 27 inches, where as today it is 34 inches. With the average dress size for a woman being a 12, and today it is a size 16. Less Chance to Graze Not every household in the 50’s owned a fridge. This meant women during this time were not able to over stock up on unhealthy cakes and snacks that perished quickly. Meals would have been prepared from scratch, with fresh ingredients bought daily. Filling Healthier Meals Were Standard in the 50’s In the 50’s, meals were protein and vegetable rich. Carbohydrates and grains were consumed far less than today. In comparison, it is common for women today to fill up the majority of the day on carbohydrate rich foods such as sandwiches and pasta. Protein is vital not only because it helps to rebuild damage in your body and manufacture hormones, but it can also be very beneficial to those looking to lose weight as it fills you up for longer than a carbohydrate rich meal.

I wish it was a combination of conservative wear while keeping some progressive ideas. The backlash against LGBTQ is insane and inhumane.
