Although I think this concert is amazing. Texas flood definitely elevated the opinion of the rest of that concert. As a whole his Tokyo 1985 show is his best. Michael even said that himself when he reacted to it a year or so ago.

When I was 19, I didn't really listen to blues at all. Was into Pantera, Ozzy, BLS, etc. My brother(whom was also a bit of a metal head) and I smoked a bowl and he said, "You want to see some fucking guitar playing?!".. He put this on, it was a VHS, and I pretty much just sat there awestruck for the entire tape. The rest is history.

I saw it in the theater when it was still running (usually as the midnight movie) back in 1985 probably about 6 times. We would all run around the theater for Life During Wartime. Last year for the re-release was the first time I'd seen it in the theater since then. It was fucking magical. My wife had never seen it in the theater nor had the younger friends we were there with. I think one had never seen it at all. They were all absolutely blown away - as expected. I decided that I needed to get up and run around the theater this time as well. :) No one else did, but I didn't care.

Toto Live in Paris. All brilliant, but Lukather is absolutely on fire (guitar and vocals). Nightwish, Showtime, Storytime - Live at Wacken, 2013. One of the best gigs ever recorded. The sound quality, filming, stagecraft, music, sense of crowd interaction, best singer ever - what more could you ask for.

Led Zeppelin at Royal Albert Hall in 1970. James Brown at Boston Garden in 1968 (the day after MLK was shot, James actually stopped a riot cold from taking place at the concert, its amazing, and its all on youtube.)
@prettydeep3081
@prettydeep3081 4 месяца назад
Re: James brown; the Mayor of Boston played the concert on public access television so people would stay at home rather than go out into the streets. Imagine being a young black kid in 1968 in Boston and there is an entire free James Brown concert live on tv. James Brown was the most famous American on planet Earth at the time. And the only music you'd normally see live on tv in '68 is country music and one song a week on the heavily censored Ed Sullivan show. Not only did he stop a riot before it started and save the entire city, most people watching at home had never seen live music like this in their lives. It was a pivotal moment in American music history I think that is sorely overlooked. In the wake of MLK, Brown was leaned upon as a black community leader, a role he was ill-equipped for, and it ultimately broke him.

hey Mike. I've got a collection of videos going back to the VHS tapes in the late 70's. Up to DVD shows, Pink Floyd, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Peter Frampton, and many of the Jazz Greats too. I don't have any Mozart Live, or Bach... Wish I did... I am a Classical Music Freak too. My Dad had everything classical back to the 1920's 78 RPM. Now I have them all. As a guitar player, and owner of my own recording studio in the mountains of The Poconos, PA. I find stuff and re-record it to 1/2 inch tape, analog, on my two TASCAM 38 and 30-8 R2R decks. Live music is what it is all about. Back in the late 60's, I was 14 going on 15 when I would go into NYC and see everyone from Hendrix and Humble Pie, to Pink Floyd and Frank Zappa, of which, Frank was my favorite live show, hands down. Most of his band back then was reading charts and tossing paper off their music stands. That along blew me away. Robin Trower was also one who around 1971 came out on his own with the best 3 man live band since Cream!! Great video Michael. Keep up the good work dude... Hope to catch you live one day soon.

I totally agree. I love those concerts. I listen with my airpods so I don't miss anything. Music is magic. Where does it come from? I grew up with these bands. It helped me through the worst of times. Healing my soul. My nr. 1- The Allman Brothers. Fillmore East.

SRV & Double Trouble "Live at the El Mocambo" and Van Halen's "Live Without a Net" are must watch DVD's. Stevie's playing just decimates the crowd, who clearly weren't ready to hear that brand of Texas blues come screaming out of his amplifier. I picked VH because it's mind-boggling to watch EVH run all over the stage and jump up and down for two hours, all the while nailing every tapped harmonic and playing things that I can't play when I'm sitting in my little basement studio, concentrating as hard as I can to try to pull off even some of his amazing licks.

The first concert DVD I ever saw was Joe Satriani live in San Francisco. When you're a young, impressionable guitarist and see that... how do you not fall in love with the guitar. You have also showcased a song from another concert already, not sure if you have watched the entire thing yet, but, Bonamassa live at the Greek Theater. Fantastic.

Only discovered concerts and live music in my thirties, but I'm catching up. Some of my favorites: I saw Brandi Carlile and Friends at the Hollywood Bowl last October 2023, with Joni Mitchell. One of my all time favorites! Friday Night in San Francisco, Paco de Lucia, John McLaughlin and Al DiMeola. Saw them on tv, been looking for a dvd, but nowhere to be found. John Mayer, Where the Light is, Live in LA. Wish I was there.

Great job, so hard to choose a top 5. So good to Floyd, the Wall tour was amazing live too. I'd also need Bowie, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Who, Yes at Hollywood Bowl, Led Zeppelin at Knebworth, AC/DC as you mentioned too and many more tbh. Like I said, so hard this...

Your list is not something I’d normally listen to but will now go and look - thank you! My list would definitely include: - Dire Straits:On The Night - guitar solo in Brothers in Arms is up there with my favourites of all time on any song. - Sigur Rós:Heima - a series of free, unannounced concerts dotted around Iceland. Prehistoric fossilised rhubarb is played, they sing in an abandoned herring oil tank - what else do I need to say? Although it’s technically a documentary it’s a series of concerns in different venues. Jacob Collier:Live in Lisbon - It’s Jacob at some of his most Jacobist. - u2:elevation tour. Just classic and great.

Great call on Hendrix's "Machine Gun". Goes on a bit, but it is truly otherworldly. And Floyd at Pompei? What can you say? That video is totally iconic. And "One of These Days" - so primal! A super-nasty bass sound from Waters. Love it. Enjoyed your video.
@zenlandzipline
@zenlandzipline 3 месяца назад
That Pompei video is heavily edited (overdubs) in the studio. Very enjoyable nonetheless, but it’s hard for me to get behind this pick as a “magical” performance. In reality, it’s actually more like the predecessor to an MTV video. I do love it though, and I’m not knocking it.

I always love live albums and going to concerts. I have seen all of my favorite bands in concert. Three Dog Night is The band I love hearing live in concert more than any other band. I'm 65 and Three Dog Night eluded me until 5 years ago. Our veterinarian had a customer appreciation night. Good food and concert tickets to Three Dog Night. That was the best concert, I walked out, knowing that my life had just been fulfilled. The J. Giels Band Full House. Lynerd Skynerd Live from the '70s. Yes live albums. Tobey Keith live.

I really appreciate your list. Great performances! Most of all, it made me think of what my top 5 is. I don't know what the top 5 would be for me all time but I have an idea of the ones that really just blew me away. #5 for me would probably be Metallica at Tunisha airfield in 91' #4 Dispatch at Radio City...I went in blindly and didn't know who they were on even 1 song and I left a forever fan. #3 Prince at the Super Bowl! After I watched it live that night, I just couldn't wait to see it again. It made my hair stand up on my neck! #2 is a Tie between DMB central park show with Warren Hayes in 2003 and Mayers Where the Light is show at the Nokia in LA. Again, I'm not saying these are the best shows ever but the most meaningful for me. #1 for me is Dead and Co live at the Gorge 23 I was blessed to be able to be there for the 2nd night. I'm sure this list will change in my mind 10 minutes after I post my comment but this was fun non the less

I ended up going down a youtube rabbit hole after that and I just watched The Jerry Garcia band with Bruce Hornsby do a killer cut of The Night They Drove Old Dicksie Down. I was blown away!! The video quality is not the best but don't let that keep anyone from giving it a listen.
