"You will have the polar bear problem. you will have the ignorance problem, because you lot are apparently ignorant." Can't stop laughing at how he said that in such a dry, unjoking manner.
I remember watching this when I was much younger and thinking he was a bit of a prat. Being older, I totally sympathize with him, an expert trying to get them ready for this, watching these guys ready to race to their deaths and not even trying to take it seriously.
Serious explorers, people who live and work in dangerous places etc generally have this attitude towards silly pricks who decide to do it for a laugh, because it's not just them who might die, it's the production crew who are forced to film them, keep their car going, pick up after them, put up their tents once they're done pretending they're doing it themselves for the camera etc. People deciding to go on jaunts to the top of Everest or to the Pole for a laugh usually get people killed and it isn't always themselves, it's the people with actual experience that have to drag their useless arses along or rescue them when they get themselves stuck
But he actually means it, literally. He doesn't just mean "you guys are dumbasses", he means "you are totally untrained in Arctic travel, the methods of preserving your life is those hostile situations". Literally, they are ignorant on the subject. I don't think he even meant to be rude and negative about it, it was just a statement of the situation. And I am sure it had some relation so something that was already said, like he asked them "what do you know about arctic travel?" and they said "absolutely nothing", and he said "so you are essentially ignorant of the dangers you will be facing?" I don't hink it was just meant to be a funny joke for TV, although the editors knew people would take it that way.
Weird, I thought sled dogs were usually not accustomed to much affection and warmth, and they tend to be pretty dangerous. They aren't actually abused but they are treated more like pack animals and beasts of burden than pets. They don't get petted or cuddled, their reward is their food, their duty is obedience. I remember being kind of shocked when I read accounts of how the dogs are treated. It seemed a bit on the callous side, but not enough to actually be cruel. And they are half wild aside from the training for the sled.
I totally agree, what they achieved was hugely impressive and way beyond anything else they did. Also in other episodes they like to make things look more dangerous than it actually is. I don't think they did that here, I believe that the danger was real.
@@Boris_V You have to remember that, at the time, HD cameras were a brand new thing. This was the first time the series had done HD, and they take it off to the North Pole. In the context of the time? Yes. It is impressive. These days, not at all, sure.
I like how that, when the guy explaining how fast polar bears are, he uses an metaphor involving a car that debuted in 1976, so he's been saying that since at least that long ago.
I wish they had shown more of Hammond's journey in this special ! the balls of this man, going to the north pole on a sled 6 months after a terrifying life changing accident
@@dbtwenty8 nono, what I mean is, they had to show off the truck more on TV. Basically like an advertisement. "A truck so good it can make it to the north pole"
@@thomassmith8140 I mean, its the BBC so they don't have to advertise anything. But its a car show so I imagine the company they got the car from insisted that a good amount of screen time be dedicated to it in the show so that they could use it.
The entire time Richard was on during this special I got a little heartbroken. Mentally it took a serious toll on him which he said in the special. I think at one point he said he cried a little bit. Then when he threatened the girl for making a joke because he was just so exhausted that day. You can see how this effected all of them.
He never bothered to try and get to the North Pole after the car won because he found it cruel to put in the effort only for Clarkson and May to gloat.
This was also the first thing he filmed after his big jet crash and the resulting brain damage. He wasn't 100% better yet and actually has no memory of filming this at all.
@@jacobpaulson23 Not sure anymore actually, I definitely did read that, but I saw him talking about some unaired part of the trip recently, so I may have been wrong.
"The thing about death out here is thst once you're dead, you freeze. I want my body to be found wearing the appropriate expression." I actually approve of this. If I do die, I want my face to look exactly what the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera's front looks like.
I can attest for the hate thing having been in a similar situation. You either sink into an abysmal apathy or feel like going on a murdering rampage. When your body is being assaulted by the elements you start to hate unconditionally.
UltraMato the human body is funny. when you put it to extreams. cold, heat, hunger, stress and inzomnia and such you will start to hate who ever is near you for the smallest things.
I actually want to read more into this "developing hatred" can you guide me to a science journal, a personal blog or a science paper. Really intrigues me as I've also experienced it myself.
I have nothing but my own anecdotal experiences. I was in a SF unit "light" (rangers) when I was conscripted in the army back in my day. A lot of survival training, interrogation training and spending a lot of time outdoors in arctic conditions.
@@HuskyGamersUNITE this was literally done after the crash, Hammond states that he has no recollection of this special as it was so soon after his crash.
Hammond briefly talks about doing this special in a video where he's reunited with his old Ferrari. He said in hindsight, he SHOULDN'T have been allowed to do this, but at the time, he was determined to go on as if life was normal.
I wish they'd kept in Hammond explaining how the dogs kept warm up there and that they actually get too hot because of how effective their fur is. I know he mentions that the dogs prefer the cooler temperatures at night. I also wish they'd kept in either May's map bit with the fuel drop mention or them driving around looking for the fuel drop, because while I should have realized they wouldn't have had enough to make it from Resolute to the Pole without filling up, it also didn't really occur to me that they would have needed a fuel drop for it. At the time I first watched the ep I think I assumed one of the camera trucks was carrying the extra fuel.
@@Jimarillion Yeah. I remember when it aired on BBC America. I got my eps in a maybe less-than-legal way, lol, so they're all as they aired originally on the BBC in the UK. What's interesting is that in a number of instances the music will be different. The UK version uses the main Requiem for a Dream music pretty often in the Polar Special, but that music isn't used in the version aired in the US. Must be a big difference with licensing and such.
@@SolaScientia :) I would guess there is always someone behind the scenes who makes things harder than they need to be. Regardless :) given the time of year (almost there) to important things.... I hope you have a Merry New years PaulaKiesling. Take care and be safe (I hear it is quite cold over there in the USA right now)
I would've like to see the refueling part, which they probably didn't film and which is probably also the reason they left the first part of this video out.
Loch Nesmon Star In the heat of the moment, I said something really nasty to deadpan but I realised what he actually meant, as soon as he replied the second time. so I was embarrassed and deleted my nasty comment. my bad 🤐
i dont care if you like them or not and i dont care how much support they got. 3 middle aged men went to the north pole. no one who goes has an easy time of it. hats off.. i wouldnt have done this journey to save my own mum.
This had so many great moments, May sitting on the toilet and Clarkson driving off, Clarkson crapping and May cocking the Shotgun, them eating candy with the Jesus doll, and so on
Fuck me! 400 miles on arctic terrain! One things for sure, my supplies would include as much whiskey as it did spare fuel!!! No rozzer interruptions up THERE!!!
Starting to hate your friend because you spent too much time with them. VERY real. Only thing you can do is get away from that person and take some time for yourself. And remember. we are all the same in the end. your friend is also most likely hating you too.
Not to many. Our cognitive thinking hasn't change much in the past 30.000 years. So the Romans, Egyptians, every civilation since then, had basically the same intelligence as us, but different technology.
5:58 Interesting that they deleted this scene; if i remember rightly it was that very same sat-nav that bleeps/ticked over telling them when they got to the pole...so if it doesn't work...did they actually make it???
He is certainly a homosexual, anyone who disagrees hasn't watched enough tg or enough deleted scenes. He should just come out already it's 2018 nobody cares.
He's had the same wife or girlfriend for 19 years. He's in touch with his feminine side, that's for sure, but that doesn't necessarily equal homosexual.
Idk why everyone is saying these aren't deleted, they are. Here in the UK anyway, these were not shown. iPlayer has all the episodes currently on there (a blessing) but these scenes are NOT there. Everyone saying otherwise probably watched this outside the UK, a different cut.
I understand there is footage of the 3 Carballeros here getting educated and informed about the real danger of frostbite by being shown a picture of some polar explorer's willy. EDIT: Rumored scene is not here.
adding the bit about needing to find the fuel did add a bit of drama to their side 'cause in the main episode it just mostly looked quite easy until the boulder fields.
If Clarkson chinned his producer for not having a hot meal ready for him at 9pm in a 5 star hotel - it makes you wonder how much they had to pamper him on this trip. Were specific members of the crew designated to rub the tips of his toes every 10 miles ?
Wow watching this in 2022, and the Dracula pola bears, non existant ice is sad to look back on. Plus coping with a killer virus that us 20 years on cant behave enough to stop spreading it, and stop our emissions
I doubt that this video material is CC (CreativeCommons) as mentioned in the description. How did you guys get the approval of the producers of TopGear to publicy release parts of their material here? Just curious
These are on the DVD. Showing just certain scene's and making compilations and all that is allowed on RU-vid, it's basically free advertisment for the show. And it works, after seeing this now I decided to go to the Top Gear chanel tonight and watch the whole episode again.
Really?...The man is a fucking legend, an Artic explorer, holder of several endurance records, climbed mount Everest when he was 65 years old, the first man to cross Antarctica, alone, on foot, dragging all of his own supplies, sailed and dragged (with a couple of mates) an 18ft open Boston whaler in a trans globe circumnavigation from pole to pole, He has led expeditions along the White Nile in Africa, he ran 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days, for charity when he was 60, only.4 months after a double heart bypass operation... and oh yeah....... served with the SAS in Oman in the 1960s, where he saw extensive active service during the Dhofar Rebellion.
chrish12345 while he was exploring the North pole his sleigh fell through the ice. He retrieved it from the frigid water. Even though his hand was in the water for a couple of minutes, it got Frostbitten. Doctor told him to wait for a month to operate it. But as it was painful, he couldn't wait and went into his shed with a scalpel and cut off the fingers himself. he wants to say to these 3 is that the North pole is a very brutal place. Even the best of the best get hurt.
@@funguyfarage3615 there are not accurate enough records to say what has been happening to the polar population over the last 10 years. For some strange reason biologists prefer to do research in warm climates.
How is he ? he's the world greatest living explorer and for a good reason and there was nothing arrogant in what he said at all he was being deadly serious and he had to be did you not see his hands as he explains in other videos that was a 30 second mistake
They didn't go to the north pole. They went to the magnetic north pole. Going to the actual north pole would be impossible partly due to climate change.
@DroidTech That's a stupid conclusion. Based on that logic, we are in an ice age as we're experiencing record cold temperatures here in Iowa, much further south than your location. If you're going to argue a point use some real logic. One bit of anecdotal evidence is worthless.
