@@Mister_Samsonite 2 things can be true at the same time. Paul was actually asking god to have mercy on him for killing John. God let Paul live long enough to see everyone he's ever loved die, including the lady at the retirement home. Paul was asking god for mercy. I don't know the mind of god but I think he punishes Paul and ultimately forgives Paul. He knows Paul is a good man. That's how I see it anyway. Please understand I'm an atheist so this is strictly my pov. Nothing more.
@xSHIELDBREAKERx82
@xSHIELDBREAKERx82 2 месяца назад
It's both. Insomuch as the underpinning context of the movie shows is that even the justice system, especially then-screws up Biblically. Human failibility is one thing, racism another. People assumed Coffee was guilty because he was black. People think it's bad now haven't a clue about Jim Crow and earlier periods. But the saving grace is that it also shows that not all white people treated black people the same way. Sure, at the beginning they were quasi-harsh. Racist? Maybe a fudge. Biases are everywhere regardless of era. But Paul and Coffee grew on one another the most. But Paul has a job to do. Is it right? Morally, no. Is there much he can do about it? In that day and time? Likely not. It definitely sucks and you can see they know deep down he's innocent but they can't do anything. Coffee knows this and accepts it. In a way, yes, it is an allegory of Christ. But when Paul says May God have mercy on your soul, it is part of his job but also because he wants forgiveness for killing an innocent man. Something he regrets he can do nothing about. As for his long years. I think it more that God granted it to him as a way for him to forgive himself. God is aware there are things beyond our immediate control that we'll feel guilty over. Some people need time to realize they can't fix it all.

It feels so weird to think about this because he usually writes god and christianity in a negative way. And every one of his works that I've seen Christianity get involved, it's usually that the character is a zealot. The whole reason I refuse to read his books is because of this, and I found out what was supposed to happen in the Pennywise books with that girl and her friends. Who decides to have a gang bang with her friends just to get over her sexual trauma of being abused by her dad?? These were supposed to be underraged kids we were talking about! This was the only movie of his that I watched and liked other than the mist because of how they changed that a little. It felt good to watch that man call out that woman for her actions when she fear mongered the rest of the people inside of that store. But I did really like this movie when I watched it as a kid, even though I was blubbering like a baby by the end.

I wonder sometimes - if Jesus was born today, and he had the ability to empathize that deeply as John Coffey did, how would he manage? Would being God's son give him the strength to deal with the unending wave of ugliness and horror that people are inflicting on each other these days? I'm honestly not sure. I'm not even sure he wouldn't commit suicide - the ultimate sin in the eyes of the Catholic Church - simply to stop feeling so much all the time.

I get what you're saying, but I think what they mean is he doesn't deserve to be hated and unalived. He deserved to live and be loved, which is what we all feel. Unfortunately, all the darkness and evil he felt in the world was too much to bear, so he wanted to leave the world and finally rest. The good thing to take away from his execution is that he didn't die alone and unloved. The guards loved and mourned his loss, so he passed from the world loved by at least a few people. He definitely didn't deserve any of the hate those other people spat at him, though.

I believe you’re responding to Magic Magy. What she was referring to was John didn’t deserve to die being hated and condemned for a crime he never committed. John definitely wanted this, but it doesn’t make any less unjust he died being seen as nothing more than a child murderer when all he ever wanted was to be loved and to see others love each other.

@@tmc31390 In that case, it's not that he didn't deserve this, but that we don't deserve him. And, boy, should he be glad to have been given a seat in Old Sparky in 1935. 4-5 years later? Wooh. That is one big headache.

I watched this movie in the theater with my Wife when it came out. The horror in the audience when Dale was burned to a crisp was Horrible. But when they executed John Coffey there wasn't a dry eye in the entire audience. I felt so bad for the guards especially Tom Hanks character. His question to John about when his time came to stand before God, what was he going to say to him about killing one of his Miracles, has stuck with me to this day.

My mom told me before i was born, i had a cousin named Zane, he hung out with the wrong crowd and one day Zane wasnt with his frieñds, they committed a murder and because Zane was the smallest and youngest they blamed him, he was sentenced to death my grandma and his mom went to watch, my uncle couldn't bare it so he never went, years later after his execution it was revealed the reason why Zane kept quiet was because the family was threatened, so zane died keeping that to himself

In case anyone is wondering... this draws heavily off of the tragic story of Junius Stinney Jr a 14 yr. Old child who was accused of assault and murder of 2 little white girls when he was found trying to help them. They ran his family out of town and electrocuted him to death. John coffee is child-like and innocent like Junius and the miracles are an embellishment to enhance the story and tie it in to the Stephen King universe

When I was 14 they put a small cinema in the sports club we went to. Many kids (really young and some teenagers) went to see this movie. Don’t really remember the “dry sponge” reaction but when it got to this part we were all scream crying and asking “why?” To parents while leaving. It was a lot.

I remember balling my eyeballs out at this scene at the theaters when it first came out, and thinking to myself, you better collect yourself, the movie has to be almost over, then a sense of calm washed over me as I realized I wasn't the only one crying. I could hear people ugly crying all around me. I thought, well, at least I won't be the only mess when the lights come on in this place. 😂

it not just his innocence that made everyone cry> People also forgot that "john" also felt the pain of people all over the world. he felt their sins and their painful emotions, he wanted to let the world know he did it because he no longer wanted to be exposed to that pain and suffering. thats the part that made me cry when i watched the movie. that a team of god men had to kill god's angel because he could no longer live with the pain and hatred people had in their hearts.
