Phoenix and Bob were suppose to be "enemies" originally, but the actors had such great chemistry on the set they changed it to make them friends.

The E model is a single-seater; the F-model is a two-seater, so when John Hamm was asking about Foxtrot teams, he was asking who the two two-seater fliers would be. 31:57 Goose was Mavericks RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) in the first movie, not a wingman. A wingman is a pilot who flies an airplane to cover and support the team leader. Goose's position in the first movie was essentially the same as Bob's in this movie. Great reaction to a great movie!

Casting doesn’t get much better than Miles Teller as Rooster, Goose's son. The hair, the shades, the moustache, the shirt, the whole vibe is absolutely perfect.

You made ONE major mistake. You didn't experience it in the theater.

Keep in mind that all of the aerial shots were in actual F-18s. They had 6 iMax cameras mounted inside. The actors had to go through water survival training (per Navy requirements) before they would be allowed in the jets. Actual pilots flew the planes with the actors in the back seat, but because of the placement of the cameras it looked like the actors were flying. The G forces you see on their faces and their bodies being tossed side to side were REAL. There are several videos on the making of this movie you can check out. Hangman is the 1980's Maverick. I love how the daughter was the mature one with Mav jumping out of the window. The admiral did have a point when he told Maverick that the only lesson he's taught them is that the mission can't be done until he showed them it could be. The top is called a canopy, lol. On your 6 means behind you, your 12 o'clock is directly in front of you, 9 is left, 3 is right, etc.

Imagine the nostalgia factor for this film. I was in the middle of HS when I saw this blockbuster in theaters in 1986. Countless viewings later (including at least two more in theaters), now as a man just a few years younger than Tom Cruise, watching this in the theaters (13 times in a mix of formats, including IMAX, Dolby Cinema, and Digital). Mind blown by what I consider to be one of the greatest legacy films ever produced. With Academy Award nominations soon to come, there might be some showings in theaters...so good luck on that. I'm Tom's age and watched the first Top Gun in the theater in 1986. Finally after all these years I got to see the sequel! Worth the wait! Amazing movie!

When Rooster tells Maverick you told me not to think the first thing I thought was "you dare use my own spells against me, Potter" Great reaction to an equally great movie. This movie hit all the right keys, it feels like such a love letter to the first one, with characters like Hangman who I think is 25% Maverick, 25% Iceman and 50% his own character and also Phoenix I love that she isn't a love interest,she does a great job and doesn't feel force, she's a kickass and super capable This should be an example to people on how to make sequels Greetings from Chile (South America)

This was one of those movies that had me in tears for absolutely no reason. It was like in a movie when someone cries and says “it’s so beautiful”. That was my reaction in the theater. I cannot watch this movie without shedding a tear

43:52 That maneuver is called a "Falling Leaf". It's basically a controlled stall where the pilot cuts off thrust and uses rudders and flaps to keep the aircraft on a steady course.

18:59 I think the reason that works so well, is the characters are not an exact copy of the first show's version. I see Hangman as a combination of Maverick and Iceman. He has Mav's selfishness and cockiness, but Iceman's look. Rooster is by the book like Iceman was, but does not have the confidence to go beyond and push it like Maverick would. By the end of the movie, each character finds a middle ground that makes them even better pilots.

Actually, Maverick and Rooster aren't friends... more like the only family each other has after Mav felt about Goose.

The actors are REALLY FLYING in those jets! They trained in flight school for six months before filming and were being flown by real naval aviators who piloted from the front seat while the actors delivered their lines from the back seat.

uh, the relationship was Penny was integral to the movie. Penny was mentioned twice in the original. She was an admiral's daughter which is probably why she "knew" he was fired as an instructor when he went to talk to her. Tom had no family or friends other than Iceman and "Rooster", which is why he was so appreciative of Ice and protective of Rooster. Penny knew Goose and Iceman personally. Goose's death was also very tough on her, which is why they showed her reaction to Tom as he stood outside the bar when he heard Rooster singing Great Balls of Fire (Penny was also at Iceman's funeral). Penny was the love of Tom's life, and Tom the love of Penny's life. Her daughter knew it, which is why she told him "just don't break her heart again." Their conversation about Penny's daughter and its parallel with his relationship with Rooster was necessary for the plot line for two reasons: to show Tom trusted her as she, and Rooster's now deceased mother, were the only two people who knew why he pulled the papers from the Naval Academy, and to show how deep their feelings were for each other as they shared their experiences with their loved ones. Tom had to let Rooster go to save his relationship with him (Iceman served that purpose), which necessarily provided closure to his career and the ability to finally complete his life with Penny in it. Great reaction though. Liked your genuine excitement when Tom flew the practice course and when you giggled a few times with Tom's tomfoolery. You have a beautiful smile. I loved the film. It gives Hollywood a chance to start saving itself should it want to by awarding it Best Picture at the Oscars. It was objectively the best film of the year, and not even close. In fact, it is the best film I have seen since Forest Gump, and certainly the only film I've seen that ended with thunderous applause by the audience. Cried twice, laughed, was nervous, excited, cheered. It was everything. Your reaction says it all.

Top Gun: Maverick is THE best movie i've ever seen in theaters and one of the 5 best movies i've ever seen period.

I've generally enjoyed Tom Cruise's movies, but this one is far up on the list. Probably my favorite movie of 2022. So much fun, the references to the first movie, the music is incredible (shoutout to Hans Zimmer), the cinematography is stunning, Jennifer Connelly is gorgeous and gives a great performance (both as per usual), the rest of the supporting cast are fun and have their own wrinkles, and Tom Cruise just kills this role. I think he plays Maverick so well because it is what I imagine Tom Cruise himself being like. Bold, stubborn, and a little funny.

Great reaction and commentary. You earned a sub. This was amazing to go see in the theater. My Brother and his family, along with myself took my 73 year old mom to watch this in IMAX as she's never been to watch a movie in IMAX and loved the original Top Gun. We all thought it would be the perfect experience for her and we were right. Less than five minutes after the end credits she asked us when we were taking her back. I recently took her back to see the new Avatar movie in IMAX 3D (she's also never seen a 3D movie), and she loved that experience too, but on the way home she said she enjoyed watching Top Gun: Maverick on IMAX more. I expect they may re-release it shortly back to theaters as it will likely get a couple of nominations for the Academy Awards. If that happens then do yourself a favor and try to see it in IMAX. It's a remarkable experience!

Do you remember in the original Top Gun, in the beginning their wing Commander is chewing them out and mentions one Admirals daughter and Goose says Penny Benjamin. Then Carol (Meg Ryan) mentioned Penny Benjamin to Maverick in the restaurant.

Enjoyed your reaction! You asked if getting hit by birds is common? (Bird Strike) This is WHY they have a 'Hard Deck' that you don't do aggressive maneuvers below. In the first movie it was 10,000 ft. In this one it started out at 5000 ft.

I went to see this in theaters with my sister. After the plane blew up in the beginning I leaned over to her and whispered, “I would totally be okay with Maverick going out like this. I don’t care if they lied to us in the trailers, that’s how Maverick should go out”.

I saw this in the theater 3 times. Anyone who can watch Top Gun: Maverick without a grin on their face is dead inside.

Such an amazing reaction and such a great movie! The amusing thing for me that no one really gets that Hangman is Maverick as he would have been in this era of single seat warplanes. The main thing that kept Maverick from being what Hangman was is that Mav always had Goose, in some ways his conscience, riding brakes on Mav's worst impulses and making them not so bad. Mav was responsible to and for Goose, and since Goose was his only family Mav usually held himself in check so he wouldn't let Goose down. Hangman didn't have a back seater to be responsible to and for, so he could go all out to prove he was the best he could be and better than everyone else, which justly earned him his callsign: because he'd always hang you out to dry to prove he was better than everyone else. Luckily, and thankfully, Hangman learned the important lesson about teamwork through Mav, who uniquely understood Hangman's driven personality. Hangman's character development was a very well done part of the movie too. In an early script Hangman was to be Ice's son. I'm glad they scrapped that. In the F-18 scenes, professional military pilots were doing the actual flying, but the back seat cockpits were set up to look like the real thing. The tech advances for getting us inside the cockpit with the actor were amazing! And the actors had additional duties to their usual acting as they had to test and make sure the cameras were set and focused properly, that their makeup was good, and that the shots were as near perfect as possible. The director had the toughest time since all he could do was stand around and wait until the day's flying was done, then collect all the day's filming out of the onboard camera systems and take it to watch for the first time then and make notes for the next day's flying. The actors actually had to go through an intensive training program to adapt them for flying in the fighters. I imagine there was some vomit cleaned out of the cockpit after some of those maneuvers. Even though the actors, from what I remember, were never taken above 4G, that's nothing to sneeze at. Especially over time. I know the Fury 325 roller coaster at Carowinds near where I grew up in Charlotte, NC is said to max out at around 4Gs, that's just for a short period of time. And people still lose their lunch over that. The WWII plane Cruise was working on at the beginning and flying at the end of the movie is his own personal plane that he is licensed to fly. He took members of the cast and crew up in it for fun in between work. That had to be a blast. Val Kilmer, of course, had been fighting throat cancer in real life, but it was important to have him in this movie and they all wanted him to be there. His voice in the scenes was a programmed synthesized voice, but it was perfectly his voice as it might be. It was so good to see them end up as such close friends, and to know that Ice had constantly been Mav's guardian angel, keeping him in the service no matter what Mav did to get himself dismissed. And it showed a lot of how well Ice really understood Mav, and explains a lot of Mav's behaviors in the early movie. Mav is basically suicidally depressed when the movie starts, but he's not the suicidal type, so he looks for situations where he can go out doing what he does best, but he fights to survive anyway because that is his nature. Ignoring how he feels (typical man, I know ) he focuses on something else that he can control: flying. All Mav has is the service. He has no family. Even Goose's family he's not close to, though we only learn why as the movie advances. The Navy and the people he works with, best shown in Hondo, are the only family he has. So he pushes beyond Mach 10 because the project is going to be shut down and he'll lose the team/family he's been working with and, knowing as he does that Ice has been fighting cancer, he is aware that his long-term guardian angel might not be able to keep him where he needs to be. His time is running out, and he's well aware of that, so if he stays in pure Maverick mode and pushes juuust a bit more, and a bit more again, then maybe his picture can hang on the wall with all the other test pilots who died in the cockpit. So he does. But he survives. And his guardian angel is still able to shift him back to someplace he needs to be. Whether this was Ice's grand plan, knowing who all from Pete's history was there, Mav ends up where he needs to be to reestablish a will to live beyond the military. Reestablishment of his old family with Rooster. Rediscovery and, much more importantly, a new appreciation of, an old flame (mentioned but never seen in the original movie). And suddenly Mav has every reason to not die in the cockpit. So, of course, he must go and do something that could very easily make him die in the cockpit. Twice. In a Hollyweird full of shallow movies and shows with shallow scripts and no actual thought behind them and shallow characters who only change in shallow ways, a movie of this great depth made me so happy to see. I can watch it again and again and love it still. So very well done. For all the concerns I've had for Tom Cruise's weirdnesses in the past, he is absolutely a glorious hero for making this movie happen. Also, Bob was awesome. It amuses me that Lewis (Bob) Pullman's real life dad, Bill Pullman, played a former F-18 pilot turned president in the movie Independence Day. Like father, like son, flying in F-18s. Great reaction! I'm subbing now. 🙂

Something I just noticed: When Mav was schooling all the students the deal was only for the FIRST plane crew to get shot down to do the push-ups. Hangman was shot down second and still elected to push with Phoenix and Bob, probably out of some kind of self-punishment for not taking Maverick seriously. Kind of an early indicator of his character.

This is THE feel good movie of the year… nay, the decade… and was a hell of an experience in cinema. The bar scene that introduces the new characters has a few little Easter eggs: when Jennifer Connolly’s Penny enters, the song in the background is “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie, who starred alongside Connolly in Labyrinth. When Hangman selects a song from the jukebox, he presses 86, which is the year the original Top Gun came out. That song is “Slow Ride” by Foghat, and its apt that its playing while Hangman taunts Rooster about his cautious flying style. When Rooster plays the piano, Miles Teller actually learned the song, this scene is a live take of that performance. They were so happy with it that it was added to the OST, and they edited the scene into a music video, so Miles Teller has an officially credited cover of “Great Balls Of Fire”. The scene where Mav jumps out of Penny’s window and Amelia catches him, I’m certain she already knew he was there… his bike is parked outside the front door. The scene with Coyote blacking out, recovering, the bird strike, Phoenix and Bob ejecting, Mav and Rooster arguing and then Iceman’s funeral… rollercoaster ride of emotions! And yes bird strikes can happen, but they wouldn’t destroy a jet engine like here. “Foxtrot Team” - I’m ashamed it took me more than 1 watch to realise this - “Foxtrot” is phonetic alphabet for “F”, the planes they are flying in this, the F-18, has a single and a dual seat version… the single is designated F-18E, the dual is F-18F… the “Foxtrot Team” is the dual seaters (Phoenix/Bob, Payback/Fanboy). My favourite thing about the escape scene (aside from the whole thing), when Rooster says “how are we gonna get this museum piece in the air?”, they are actually in a museum piece… the F-14 they used for the ground scenes is the one on display at San Diego Air and Space Museum. They shipped it out to location and filmed the scenes on the ground, however as she is a retired aircraft, her engines had been stripped. So the question truly stands, as without engines, how do you get this museum piece in the air? The answer is CGI. That finale was all CGI. “Thank you for saving my life.” “It’s what my dad would’ve done.”… I’m not crying 🥲

This flick was amazing in the theater! Highly recommended

37:52 lol, when someone uses a measurement of time to express a direction, they're actually going off a standard analog clock. So, "3 o'clock" would be to your right, "9 o'clock" would be to your left, and "6 o'clock" would be behind you. Also, they use flares to mess with the missiles homing systems :)

The scene at the beginning when Maverick takes off and blows the roof off of that security post, the actual plane that did that was a US Navy Blue Angels F-18 Hornet flown by former US Navy Blue Angels Pilot Commander Frank "Walleye" Weisser. He was the pilot that flew Tom Cruise in this movie. The Blue Angel are a flight demonstration team the performs at air shows across the US. Commander Weisser said he did stunts for this movie that are some of the toughest he has ever had to do and will never do again. For him to say that says a lot given the maneuvers he did as a member of the Blue Angels. Anybody who has seen them at air shows knows what I mean. Tom Cruise put together a training program for his costars to get used to the G forces they would be experiencing up is the real planes. They started off in small planes the get used to the feel of a cockpit, then they moved up to aerobatic planes that are faster and more maneuverable then they got rides with the Patriots Jet Team, they fly L-39 Albatross jet aircraft and also perform at air shows. Their rides with them got the actors experience with heavier Gs. The Patriots jet team also did some of the aerial camera work for the movie. Two of their pilots are former member of the Blue Angels and US Air Force Thunderbirds. The Thunderbirds fly at air shows as well sometimes at the same air show with the Blue Angels, but that is a rare thing but is happening more often recently than is has in the passed which is great for everybody that goes to air shows like I do.

Although the mission flown was completely contrived and could have easily been accomplished by other means, this can easily be forgiven because it delivered the tension and the drama needed to make this film really work. The writing was very strong, the cinematography was amazing, and the score was absolutely perfect. Tom and the rest of the team deserve Oscars for their work here.

The takeoff shot at the beginning was done with an f-18 (a regular jet, don't know how familiar you are), with the future-jet put in afterwards. The roof popping up off the guard station was completely unintentional

It's interesting you say that Hangman is like Iceman. I thought that Hangman was Maverick to the extreme (the negative qualities) and Rooster was like Iceman to the extreme (by the book, cautious - but in this case too much).

A lot of people seem to confuse what Maverick did in the 1st part of the movie, Mach 10, with the 10G he pulls while doing the bombing run. Mach is a scale relative to the speed of sound (Mach 1 = the speed at which sound waves travel in the environment you are in) while G is the force acting due to gravity (1G = force equal to your body weight, which you feel standing on the ground). Very different things. The implication is that Maverick by now is a fighter pilot superhero, maxed out in skills and physical prowess in all things military aircraft.

Honestly, I've watched so many reactions to this movie, because I love it so much, and yours was THE BEST! You make very intelligent and entertaining remarks without interrupting the best parts. Subbed!

When you said “like he did at the beginning of the movie”, you were referring to when he flew “Mach 10”. Mach 10 is 10x the speed of sound. 10 Gs is 10x the force of gravity. Two different levels of insanity 🤣

Bird stikes can damage planes. Watch the Tom Hanks movie "Sully", based on the real life jet liner crash in the Hudson river (New York City) a few years back.

Thought someone might have mentioned it... but Jennifer Connonlly's character is the Penny Benjamin mentioned twice in the original movie. First time when they were getting chewed out in the beginning and Mav was being reprimanded for his past "stunts" re: flybys of control towers and "one Admiral's daughter" (to which Goose leans over and questions Mav, "Penny Benjamin?"). Meg Ryan's character, at the diner scene, also mentioned how Mav had gone "ballistic with Penny Benjamin" while she was teasing him in front of Kelly McGillis' character "Charlotte 'Charlie' Blackwood" before they all went and sang at the piano. This time around, they made it seem that Mav and Penny had an on-again, off-again relationship over the years, not just prior to the events of the original movie.

I don't know if this is trivia, but you might find it interesting. Ed Harris, who played the Admiral at the beginning of this movie, was also in a movie called The Right Stuff, which covered test pilots in the '40s, '50s, and '60s, including Chuck Yeager (the first pilot to fly faster than the speed of sound) and the seven Mercury astronauts. Ed Harris played John Glenn, who flew Friendship 7 and became the first American to orbit the Earth. Ed also played Gene Kranz, the Mission Control Lead in Houston for the movie Apollo 13. So the test flight scenes at the start of Top Gun were very reminiscent of those movies.

I'm so glad someone besides me reacted to that "The best of the best" line the same way I did.

So that moment when he's walking into town after the test flight.. I am convinced that is a nod to a famous story in NV @ Area 51. In the 60/70s a test pilot had to eject out of a test flight when the plane started malfunctioning. He had to walk into the closest desert town and use a payphone to call the base at Groom Lake (Area 51) to come pick him up.

Man... I loved your reaction! Subscribed! I went through the same emotions that you went through when watching this one. One of the best movies I have ever watched so far. Pretty sure this is up there against all those animation movies that are out there.

I messed up something during one of my (civilian) flight tests, and I told the examiner I was sorry. “Sorry? Tell that to the families of the passengers you just killed!” I gotta admit, that made me take things a heck of a lot more seriously from then on.

There are a lot of small issues with Top Gun: Maverick (certain things aren't very realistic to how things are done irl, but it still did improve from the original in terms of the realism, but I can forgive most things because it is a movie) but despite them I still consider it as the greatest movie i've ever seen. Even though it's not a perfect movie, it's how this movie makes me feel emotionally is what gets me. It's just such a happy feeling movie and I freaking love it! Plus the cinematography of the fighter jet scenes are unmatched by anything i've seen, awesome stuff. Love your reaction too. You actually pay attention to what's going on, even if you can't quite get a full grasp of what's going on since not many people are experts on how dogfights work, how jets are supposed to be operated, etc. you do a good job of absorbing the information being presented so you aren't completely lost on what's happening, even though the movie just laid everything out five minutes ago. There are other things I like about your personality in this video so you got a new sub :)

As good as the original is I think this is the better movie... It has higher stakes, more realism, and they were really in the planes in Maverick 😍 Mach 10.0 and 10G are totally different things Mach is speed and G's are force of gravity so 2g's means you weigh twice as much while Mach 2 is 2 times the speed os sound...

Hey Jax Penny was mentioned twice in the first film but wasn't actually in the film. When Mav and Goose were getting a dressing down after the first dogfight and Gooses wife mentions her in the diner aswell. Pete and Penny it would seem have history that goes back pre TopGun 1

I'm looking forward to more of your reactions! 🙂 BTW, the super advanced jet "DarkStar" that Maverick was piloting is an actual mockup by the same people who gave us the SR-71 "BlackBird" which flew at Mach 3+ (mach 1 is supersonic and once you hit Mach 5, your hypersonic). That company is Lockheed Martin, more specifically, their legendary "SkunkWorks" division that have and still are producing very real, amazing aircraft. The film crew apparently worked close with the Skunk Works. If you re-watch the film, you might catch a glimpse of their official logo of a cartoon skunk on the tail fin.

Remember the Miracle on the Hudson? Where Sully and Skiles parked a plane on the Hudson River and everyone survived? They hit a flock of birds and lost both engines. Aircraft and birds are not friends, in either direction. The thing about Maverick proving the run can be done by himself is it is even harder. He has to fly and target and shoot himself where they don't plan to have one person doing all those things in the mission. Since then only unmanned experimental "planes", ballistic missiles, and space shuttles on atmospheric re-entry have surpassed that speed.

There was no Bs in the movie. Every scene mattered. It started great and got better over time. They did a nice job at explaining the backstory without even needing to see the first one (although that was a great one too). One of the best movies of all time, and easily the greatest sequel/reboot of all time

Not only are bird strikes common but they also do nothing to an FA-18. They send hundreds of frozen birds through those engines during testing and it does absolutely nothing to the engine.

The director is Joseph Kosinski, who was from my hometown in Iowa. I loved him since Tron: Legacy, which is another great flick.

I was so afraid for this to be a shameless franchise-milking movie. Thank god i was wrong. Its a worthy successor and a perfect ending for mavericks and gooses story.

Just to clarify, Mach 10 and 10 g’s are two different things. Maverick goes Mach 10 (10x the speed of sound or 7,600mph) at the beginning of the movie and he pulls 10g’s in the jet when he goes up which is 10x the force of gravity pushing down on you. So yeah not just 1 but 2 insane achievements. Just another day at work for TC

Goose was not Maverick's wingman, he was Maverick's RIO (Radar Intercept Officer). Goose rode in the backseat of the F-14 Tomcat, Maverick is a pilot. A Wingman is another pilot, that watches the back of the lead pilot. Also Penny Benjamin is not a random character, she was mentioned twice in the first movie. Once in the beginning of the movie when Maverick and Goose are getting chewed out after saving Cougar's life, and the second when Meg Ryan's character arrives at Miramar and tells Charlie about Penny Benjamin and all of Maverick's love conquests.

When the bird flew into the engine really caught me off gaurd

The behind the scenes documentary is just as interesting as the movie itself. They trained the actors for real to allow them to get on the planes, but boy had this paid off. No CGI can get close to an actual air time in an F18 with real forces on your face and body.

I have seen this movie in so many reactions, I am tired of it but when i saw you were reacting, i love you so much, i strapped in and watched you again. Love you alto voice. Love your articulation. Love your laughter. Love lamby. Thanks.

Penny is the Generals daughter Tom took on a joy ride and a tower flyby when they were getting chewed out in the beginning of TopGun 1 on the air craft carrier & Goose said " Penny Benjamin "? and even Meg Ryan said something about Penny Benjamin too. One of the BEST Sequels ever !!!!

The scene where Rooster can't eject from the F-14 was not there as a fake plot device for suspense. There a safety pins ( Martin Baker trained on an OV-1 Mohawk) that have to be removed at preflight to stop the seat from accidentally launching by someone using it as a grip if someone stumbles getting into the cockpit and cut in half by the seat leaving. No time for that when stealing the airplane. The landing on the carrier with that arresting safety net is true too.

Hangman was the only one understood the scope and stake of the mission. It was a shame he doesn’t know how to work with a team.

Bird strikes are a very common threat and very real as well.

I love Top Gun:Maverick and before seeing the movie I watched Top Gun: Maverick RU-vid reactions in dozens of channels. Then I saw the movie and of course I thought it was epic... so I continued watching reaction uploads... men, women, duos, groups... I have now probably watched it in more than 30 channels and I just wanted to say you have been the best & most enjoyable movie companion of them all. Some had a huge picture of themselves and their room and a tiny picture of the movie, which was not enjoyable at all; some never stopped talking throughout the movie, which made it difficult to hear the actors; some had the screen blocked with posters so you could see very very little of the action; and some had the movie sound turned way down so one couldn't hear the actors speaking at all. With some of these I just switched to other RU-vid channels. Some were okay & some were good... you were the best. You listened you reacted you made remarks but throughout I was still able to hear what the actors were saying... I was able to enjoy the movie and enjoy your comments and reactions. I have subscribed to your Channel and wish you success.
