Yes, an AV receiver can be a home theatre and two channel champ. For most people it has to be from a cost standpoint alone.

In theory, a AV receiver should be able to sound better than many stereo amps due to room correction.

My first video with Andrew was a review of a Crown amp. I was stunned that he gave it a rave review, as the audio file bunch look down their noses at pro equipment. I have watched every video since that day, although I don’t always finish, as the topic of the review doesn’t interest me. My point being, Andrew never lies to get more viewers and Kristie lies less. Look back through his videos with a budget in mind and I’m sure he will line you up with a system that you will like.

On my budget, I think I remain on Team Onkyo TX-RZ50. No matter which you choose, it's refreshing that in 2022 the AVRs actually work as advertised.

@@andrewrobinsonreviews I'm in the middle of an AVR shuffle in the house. Moving my Yamaha TSR-700 (RX-V6A) into the living room (3.0 setup) to replace a 20 year old AVR there. The just arriving RZ50 gets my pseudo home theater/family room (5.1.2 SETUP). Then that's it for me in new audio equipment this decade...as I'm up to date and content.

Fantastic channel, very informative, entertaining, and a very professional presentation by Andrew & Kristi, Thank you. I have almost 20 months of experience with this Marantz AVR SR8015 and I can also attest that this review is extremely accurate, and mirrors my time spent playing with it. Andrew’s quotes, “Incredible”, and, “audiophile grade performance and then some” are just spot on! I just wanted to add my experience here for others who are searching for a quality AVR to purchase. I have always coveted Marantz electronics since I was a teenager and finally the opportunity arose to purchase this one. I have had quite a few separates and receivers through out the years but this one is truly a ‘Beast’ that can handle anything you throw at it. I’ve upgraded my basement HT from an older Denon 9.1 system, which performed well for it’s time with me, to a 7.2.4 using the SR8015 and other amplifiers driving my front three (FL, C, FR) speakers. All the other surrounds and height speakers are handled by the Marantz with incredible ease. Initially I hooked up the Marantz just like Andrew, to run my whole system (without external amps) and it performed exceedingly well indeed, in all aspects. My thought process was that I would like to use this machine to reach it’s full capability of 13 channels, and add even more headroom to the front stage at the same time, by adding amplifiers I already own. I could make this all come together and possibly round out the sound field even further. I also concur with Andrew that the two apps that are available (Marantz AVR & Audyssey AVR) are tools that are a must have in your arsenal to tweak your system so it will perform to it’s fullest capacity in your own space. I have found that using Audyssey Muti EQ XT32 and limiting it’s frequency range calculations from 550HZ down to 20Hz only, along with some manual overrides, has allowed me to tailor the SR8015 so it perfectly suits my room and listening needs. I have experimented with different height channel placements and settled on 2 Front Height channels and 2 Rear Height channels instead of side surround height’s that are recommended by Auro 3D. I do use Auro-Matic (Auro 3D) up-mixer most of the time, for music and movie content that is 5.1 or 7.1 encoded unless it’s specified in the recorded material, (et: Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD MSTR) and content that is just available in stereo, I use Dolby Surround up-mixing with fantastic results. After experimenting with all the other surround formats, I found these also work well, I just personally prefer using these two. There are just so many settings and parameters to experiment with this machine, including system presets, that will allow you to accomplish any needs you might have. The SR8015 automatic detection of incoming surround signals thru HDMI has always been correct. I wasn't sure this was possible but running two channel in Pure Direct is simply sublime. It also can handle my 400 Ohm headphones run directly from the unit, as well as a 150 Ohm pair especially well, as well as my turntable. After many months of tinkering, I finally put all the tools away and have just sat back and thoroughly enjoyed stereo, movies, especially SACD’s, and multi-channel recorded music ever since. Some day I might add an additional 2 height channels (side height or FCH and voice of god) which this machine will allow with some external amplification. It does run ‘hot’, adding a cooling fan is highly recommended. My only ‘Con’ is it put a big dent in my wallet, but I must say it was money well spent, and worth every penny! Hard to put into words how well and accurately this AVR presents music and movies, but to borrow many who have already said, “Incredible sound” “very musical”, “tight & controlled”, “not at all fatiguing”, and my favorite, “audiophile grade performance and then some”, all these quotes fit the bill. From my perspective, the multi channel surround capabilities are extremely impressive and creates a tangible emotional experience. So to answer your question of the day Andrew, Yes it is possible for this Marantz to serve as the center piece of anyones HT and also serve up a stellar 2 channel listening experience. I have found myself going into the basement HT to turn on this ‘Beast’ much more often!

I am glad you brought up the X6700h in the end of your review because on the surface it does seem like the X6700h and the SR8015 are apples to apples. I don't believe they are as you hinted at given the price differences but I haven't heard the SR8015 in my setup. I had the Denon X6700h in my 7.1.4 room pushing Polk RTi A9 fronts, CSi A6 center, FXi A6 surrounds, and RTi A5 rears. The room is fairly large (roughly 15 x 27 x 8) and found the X6700h lacking the juice needed to push all 11 speakers at once, especially the A9 fronts. It wasn't until I added an Emotiva XPA 2 (second gen) for the front LR and the Emotiva BAS-X 3 (center/surrounds), did the sound truly leave me giddy like the Marantz appears to have done. I do think the Denon X6700h is fully capable of being a one stop solution in a smaller space but it may not as capable to the extent that the Marantz SR8015 is. I do LOVE my Denon X6700h and would not consider trading it in for the Marantz. This review in a way confirms my purchase now that I added extra juice to the Denon. I haven't dug into the Audyssey settings as much but can't wait to after seeing this. Side note - I have both Xbox Series X and PS5 connected via an 8K switch and have no issues with my setup.

Happy Sunday. Thanks Kristi for asking about the Yamaha flagship reciever. The “coming soon” update is getting tiresome along with the HDMI port certification is just as crazy. Marantz did their homework and produced something quite special. As far as replacement of for a two channel setup, no way at least in my setup. I connect all of my music sources to my PrimaLuna EVO 400 integrated tube amp and the sound is much better IMO. Besides these AV receivers don’t accommodate a MC phono cartridge. So if you are mainly a home theater user, who sprinkles in a little 2 channel, then an AV receiver is No brainer. I just happen to be the opposite.

I just put a deposit on the SR7015, couldn’t justify buying Yamaha A6A with its half baked HDMI 2.1. It’s 2022 and any receiver should be 4K gaming capable IMO. I couldn’t justify going to the 8015 as I live in a condo and don’t need the channels or the power. It’s great to hear sound wise this is a great performer both for movies/gaming and music. Yes - I have run stereo and AV components, integrated and receiver systems Apart from driving tough loads and very high volume - I just love a good AV receiver with the right settings for each use readily available - and then relaxes and enjoy The best Sony receivers have had that secret sauce for those who learned the controls - and when fiddling was too much, I found that getting all the settings right And Then using AFD would make me smile every time (auto format decode)… when I wanted to be surrounded in sound I would switch on a Cinema mode EX - even on stereo - and be happy Fiddling - tweaking levels - and searching for the right levels could bring even better sound across the spectrum from stereo to 5.1 and beyond, but not fiddling was very good already

Maybe you should take a look at the Denon X8500HA in comparison to the Marantz 8015. It is marginally more powerful, has 13 channels of amplification and is Denon's semi-flagship, sitting below the A110 which is a limited-edition anniversary version of the same machine with additional refinements. I have been using the X8500H (previous model without the 8k upgrade) and find its sound-quality "airy" and neutral...though lacking the sheer heft of the Denon A-1 which it replaced when the latter broke down. By the way, when may we expect your review of the Wharfedale Elysians?

Started out with a mid-tier Marantz AV receiver, then added separate amps when I started worrying that the onboard amps couldn’t drive my B&W’s. Then upgraded to the top-of-the-line AV8805 *processor* since I already had amplification taken care of. Then I upgraded to a better, multichannel amp. Each of those changes made an impactful sonic difference. Yet the internet convinced me that the Marantz’s internal DAC still stunk, so I threw a couple thousand more bucks at a trendy Holo Spring 3. And you know what? It doesn’t sound any better (without room correction) than the Marantz with Audyssey engaged, in my asymmetrical living room. Well done Marantz for putting together a really solid platform. And thanks Andrew and Kristi - please do Anthem next!

Especially on topic when looking for a dual purpose AVR! Maybe this can be a separate video! Tons of HT enthusiasts such as myself may just have satellite/ in-ceiling speakers versus full-range enclosed speakers. How does this feature measure up in regards stereo playback modes? Especially since most stereo modes treat satellite & in-ceiling speakers as full-range speakers😢. I guarantee you’ll get tons of feedback on that video if you ever create one!

I chose the Denon 6700 over the 8015 to save a few bucks and the 6700 has a voice control setting that I like (low setting really helps add just enough extra clarity for me). Otherwise, the specs are very similar. A huge benefit of both them is that they are very good prepro's for the price and have two setup presets. One can go full separates, fully integrated, and/or mixed (amp assignable) and also have two completely different setups in same/different rooms. I bet you can do a second followup video for just that. Also, I love having Zone 2 and 3 functions. Since all of my source contents are connected to the 6700 (HUB), I use the other zones to feed my tube amp (music) and a class D to play around with. Both the 8015 and 6700 are very versatile and have very similar functionality. Great video as always and thank you!

Thanks for the video as always, I do have opinion to share with you one not to do with this video, you were asked before on live stream whether you ever heard resistor ladder (R2R) dacs and you said you don't really know about it nor care much what tech is in an equipment. Giving the hilarious example of: if a running hamster in and amp gonna make it sound great keep running guys! In which I agree and totally on board with your attitude on this. I as well don't care what tech is in an equipment as long as it sound great. But I would like to share my further opinion with you, knowing what tech used in a peace of equipment can be beneficial in for consumer because it sometimes can give them some general idea of what the equipment would sound like and allowing them to nail down the vast choices out there down to a few in which they can tried out. Example, buying tube amplifier likely gonna give a warmer more full sounding than solid state amplifier. And so goes the R2R dacs utilizing a series of resistor rather than a premade chip for computation will also, in general, give a warmer and smoother sounding. Hope this give you a better understanding for the reason why some people do care about what tech is being used inside even though, ultimately it's about how its sound.

Auro 3D is a format that very much relies on the designed placement. I am very certain Andrew didn't have an Auro 3D set up. Atmos works with an Auro speaker arrangement, but Auro suffers some without the recommended placement. However, I still don't think you should lose sleep over it either way.

The preamp mode of the Marantz does appear to be mildly "superior" to that of the Onkyo, though the Onkyo does give you DIRAC, which in my opinion does produce better results in terms of room correction over Audyssey. So regardless of the outboard amp pairing your decision is likely going to come down to OTHER factors and not how the two compare straight up.

Andrew, you're right - the 8015 must be incredible in 2 channel - you really should try bi-amp mode with a tower speaker. Thanks for answering the question from the other review about whether an AV receiver could compete with a stereo amp. I've recently urged Marantz to make a 7.1 in the $2,500 range to replace the old 8002 - essentially a pared down version of the 8015 with the same power directed to the 7.1 speakers (a 10 watt increase) and more audiophile features. I hope you and Kristi can also back that up. It would still be $1,000 more expensive than the TX-RZ50 but I think it would offer an alternative that would justify the premium. Thank you and Kristi for answering it - I knew you were going to add it to this review.😀

Another great review, thank you both for all the work you put into it. Y’all are hands down the best. To expand on the comparison of RZ 50 and a higher end AVR like the Marantz 8015 does the quality of speakers you own also come into play in the diminishing return discussion? Basically, can you out spend your speakers and/or not be able to achieve the performance potential a higher end AVR can provide?

The price differential between the RZ50 and 8015 is massive. The RZ50 has more power than the 8015 but it's not a toroidal. It has an issue with 4 ohm speakers but is fine with 8 ohm speakers. I own one 8001, and two 8002 which have the same power supply and fewer channels and as a result more power per channel and probably better electronics. I'm not sure I'd purchase the 8015 at this price point.

@@techsamurai11 Thank you very much for taking the time to respond. Your comment is very helpful as I continue to learn more about home audio. I currently have an older Marantz SR7011 which started to have front channel issues so added an Emotiva external amp which seemed to solve things for a while but more issues are starting to pop up so figured it is time to start looking to replace. The RZ 50 is attractive mostly because of Dirac and it Sonos integration but don’t want to take a step backwards in sound quality so trying to learn as much as I can before pulling the trigger.
@techsamurai11
@techsamurai11 2 года назад
@@paulgross682 you're bringing up another excellent topic. Reliability, warranty, and total cost of ownership. Your unit is pretty new and shouldn't have that many issues especially as it was the flagship at the time since Marantz had discontinued the 8000 series after the 8002. My 4 Marantz units had 5 year warranties instead of 3 and sold for half price despite having the same power supply and I suspect sound quality. A 5 year warranty is many times better than a 3 year because a disproportionate number of units fail after the 3rd year. They all needed repairs especially display failure and blinking lights after losing power but nothing like what you're experiencing. A repair of an avr like the 8015 must run between $500 and $1,000 assuming they have parts which is a topic of its own. The 8015 needs cooling as it runs too hot to last a long time. I'm in the same boat and don't want to downgrade but the RZ50 seems like the more reasonable choice. In surround, it'll sound the same and offer eArc which will play better sound than Arc. It's more disposable in case of repair.

Certainly an A/V receiver can be used as a stereo source, and it would actually put out the advertised power due to the power supply only having to feed two channels. It wouldn't make sense in a dedicated listening scenario of course. I've used A/V processors with separate multiple or multi-channel amps (Carver, Yamaha, Emotiva) for more years than I care to think about, and have been perfectly satisfied. As you often say, your mileage may vary.

I have owned 4 Marantz AV receivers over 20 years including 3 of the 8000 (2 are in operation). I started with the 5002, then moved to the 8001 and then bought 2 8002s at a discontinued price. The 8001, 8002 have the same power supply as the 8015 but they have more power per channel (fewer electronics) and don't get as hot. I love Marantz but I find the 8015 way overpriced as it's nearly double the price with no power improvement. If you have a store nearby, I would definitely audition the RZ50 side-by-side with the 8015. And the reason I believe I'd do that is because after buying the 8002, I auditioned Marantz separates and I didn't hear much of a difference. I also auditioned the venerable Yamaha RX-Z11 that weighed 75lbs and cost $5,000 which was supposed to compete with the Denon 5806 (weighs nearly as much as a Rolls Royce and requires a crane for placement). Again, I thought the Marantz with my B&W 703s sounded as fantastic playing Michael Buble's bombastic I'm Feeling Fine as the Yamaha did with twice as expensive speakers (the Focal Electra BE 1028). My point is if the 8002 which was graded Audiophile level by Marantz could hold its own against Marantz separates and a 75lb Yamaha behemoth, then I figure the RZ50 might be able to hold its own against the 8015 especially since it has more power than the 8015, albeit EI vs toroidal. This is my own take of 20 years listening to about 80,000 hours of the Marantz flagship receivers 😀 Now I've asked (begged) Marantz to make a 7.2 in the $2,500 range with the exact same specs as the 8015 just fewer channels and I'd love to see some very stylish (level meters) on it. I think that would be a superb product that would entice a lot of people to switch to Marantz.
