I had a pleasure of playing the Stafford Gambit in a blitz chess against world top 100 grandmaster ‪@AdhibanBaskaran‬ in Sochi, Russia. He has a FIDE rating of 2662 and represented India at the World Cup. Be sure to check out his RU-vid channel!

Also shout out to special guest commentators ‪@DinaBelenkaya‬ and ‪@SrinathChess‬!

Adhiban - 1) Doesnt look at the board for most of the opening and middlegame 2) Trash talks on his time until hes down a minute 3) Doesnt hesitate to be down an exchange despite this 4) takes bishop instead of the queen for content. 5) Still manages to draw against Eric whos clearly trying to play for flag towards the end. What an extraordinary player.

It's hyperbole ... he threw the game on purpose, for the purpose of showing his opponent, that he can forgo taking his queen and still not lose ... even though he could have taken his queen. It's like hitting your opponent with the flat part of your sword till they give up because they are exhausted, showing them not only are you not exhausted, but you are laughing and could have killed them anytime you wanted. While his opponent was trying their hardest he himself was taking in the scenery, taking his time and enjoying that the opponent couldn't find a way to beat him. It's like you can't embarrass a dead man ... he must live to feel it ... the longer he lives the more he feels it.

@@edmorrison5645 logic is the bishop is a 'free' piece rather than to be trade (even if it's more valuable). Taking the queen is (giving up the knight, which is well positioned in the center of the board also.

GM vs IM. Im a 1800 player and the skill level between 1800 and 2000 level is enormous. My friend is 2000 rated and I loss 10 out of 10 matches or maybe draw 1 or 2 if I play really great. A difference of 100/200 is creating that much difference. Then think of the difference between an IM and a GM.
@kevinwellwrought2024
@kevinwellwrought2024 3 года назад
@@auctal4625 the elo system does not work like that. 1800 is less likely to beat 2000 than 2000 to beat 2200. 2200 is more likely to beat 2400 and 2400 even more likely to beat 2600 and the battle between 2600 and 2800 is really unclear as to who may win. Statistically higher rated player should win more games but not all games.

Probably not, as the computer marks this opening as inferior and losing for black. The computer refutes all the lines for this opening. It'll go down as a gambit not to play, in any serious tourney. It may be fun to watch humans play it, but thats not where the advancement of chess is.

@@staryoke An opening doesn't have to be sound for it to be studied theoretically or written about in books. It's more of a question of what novelties Eric has discovered in this openings and if someone chooses to write about the Stafford in an openings or gambits book. Also, even top GM's can lose to dubious openings if they are under-prepared or if there is some particularly venomous novelty. Just take a look at Fabiano's novelty against Ding from the first half of the candidates. If I remember correctly, it was really dubious but it was so venomous that the world #2 thought it could get him a win in the most important chess tournament of the year. Ofc, Ding is a beast when it comes to calculation so he managed to refute it correctly and still win though. But regardless, chess is about much more than just engine evaluations.
