Today we share a video the watch industry does not want you to see! When it comes to watches, it's just like any other subject or hobby-full of things that annoy, disappoint, and tick us off. Today we get controversial, and not just from a watch enthusiast or RU-vidr perspective, but from inside the watch industry too.
In this month's Watch Collection Talk episode with my esteemed friend and watch expert Marc Frankel of Long Island Watch, we discuss the death of true watch journalism, why a Rolex Submariner costs the amount it does, the downsides of RU-vid watch content, our top 20 watch related pet peeves, and our reactions to comments submitted by you, the good Gentry in the previous episode. If you want to know why the prices of Seiko are rising, the truth about watch reviews, the issue with women's watches, why some brands are better at social media than others, and more juicy subjects, then grab some popcorn, pour yourself a drink, and enjoy the show!

One of my pet peeves is when people don’t take “affordable” watches seriously or think that your lesser of a watch collector just because you buys stuff in your price range

thats so true; real enthusiast collect watches they loves and the price doesn't matter, there is so much good watches in the low price range but i guess this mindset come from the polluted market, i mean you cannot really go wrong with a 10k watch, but you can have a piece of junk or a really good one for 200-500
@spliffnotes8359
@spliffnotes8359 3 года назад
Absolutely. I don't know where they get the arrogance. Every real watch lover respects great watches that THEY like at any price point. Hell, even Producer Michael who has the most extravagant taste on RU-vid had a recent video wearing a cheap watch he found at like a gas station because he thought it looked cool. Let people collect what THEY like/can afford /appreciate.
@Shooterpirat
@Shooterpirat 2 года назад
Good point and I mostly agree. Collecting watches and owning a luxury product are two different things though. They often times meet, when we are represented with watch content here on youtube. There are so many good watches in the "lower" price range (even Quarz ones, I dare to say). Having an luxury item means to have something that is expensive and hard to get (and useless too). So when you want a luxury time piece, a couple hundred are not gonna cut it. I think that most people dont realise that there is a subtle difference between watch collecting and a luxury watch / luxury watch collecting.

It is “how many angels can dance on the head of a pin?” It’s a logic problem, not a math problem. It has been used as an unfair criticism of medieval scholastic philosophers on the assumption that they were actually trying to compute it.

Talking about the water resistance of dive watches, i have one watch that's rated to 1000 meters. The only way I'd be at that depth would be if my feet were in cement buckets and I got thrown off a boat.

Clepsydra: literally "thief of water" in Greek. The word is used now for the common hourglass although sand instead of water was used centuries later. Back in the day clear glass was not available and the clepsydres were made of pottery. So one would examine the water remaining in the pot (some had figures of Gods appearing as markers) and as the water would drain away the device was named "thief of water".

Hacking is also for people like me who obssessively want to see the second hand hit the 12 hour mark and the minute hand perfectly aligned to its respective index at the same time, every time. It's more about how the watch looks rather than its accuracy.
@simoncrooke1644
@simoncrooke1644 3 года назад
That can be done with a non-hackable watch. Just align the minute hand to the appropriate index as the second hand gets to the 60 sec index. They should stay aligned.

Here are my pet peeves: 1. Sharp edged crowns that dig into my wrist and rip my skin!! 2. Particles of dust on the dial or movement 3. Sending a watch in for a minor repair, like changing the scratched cristal and getting back a list of supposedly issues that have to be repaired! 4. Having bought a watch for over two grand and having it running slow !!! 5. Seiko raising the prices again!! 6 . watches I really like but can't afford! ;) Oh, and you two should really do a video on Seiko's pricing and explain what really goes on!!! Frank S.

Amazing video as always! For me, my biggest two pet peeves of the watch hobby is: 1. Only liking x watch brand, type, or only liking watches above a certain price point - For instance, "Only Rolex makes the best watches", or "Anything under 5k is trash". 2. My bank account not being as fat as I'd like it to be so I can afford more watches. There may be a bit of projection in this comment but I can live with that. Regardless, amazing video and cheers from Canada!

Great video, but I'm surprised you don't see the absolute utility of hacking function. I use mine every few days to stop my automatic for the amount of seconds gained(usually 15-20 secs) to keep my watch from running away minutes ahead over the course of time. It completely removes any need to adjust the minute hand.

Great video! Journalistic standards have been in freefall for years in printed media and TV across the board. And it's not just the general media, in my own field very few of those writing in specialist journals have any understanding of subject material and instead just regurgitate what they're spoon-fed by corporations, advertizers, NGOs and others pushing agendas. I sometimes see articles in journals and can have a pretty good idea who actually wrote it from the syntax (and it wasn't the journalist). One of my pet watch hates is fake heritage stories and some of the lies which seem to be accepted at face value.

In my childhood I heard/learned that you could tell a *fake* Rolex by its ticking second hand, ie it had a quartz movement. So maybe this led to "only Rolex's sweep"? Don't forget, that during the quartz crisis, mechanical movements in the greater public were considered obsolete and silly, except for luxury watches - which again in the greater public literally means Rolex.

Hi TGV, I discovered youre chanel recently, i'm from Canada Québec (french), I love watching your chanel, your style full of respect, your authenticity, your way of thinking and your outlook on things. A little comment on the sapphire crystal, I admit that it is difficult to understand a watch at 300$ or 400$ CAD that does not offer it, when there are watches on the market for less than $ 100 CAD that offer it. Last month I bought the Pagani Design 1639 Submariner homage watch. Ok this is a China made watch but the specs are really amazing. Saphire glass Case back exibition 10atm 316l stainless steel seikoNH35 movement I really like the Blue sunburst dial After 3 weeks of use, it only lost 17 sec In short for 65$ USD it's my by far less expressive watch and I really love it 😊 I must say that I was struggling with the NTH Näcken - Vintage Black, but it missed the crown guard, and i really wanted a back exibition case for that watch. I practice sports and very physical activities and I have broken the glasses of other watches a few times, which is why now it is only sapphire. The only one I have that is not made of sapphire is my G-SHOK GSG-100-1A3 (MASTER OF G MUDMASTER) And I managed to scratch it, after 6 months 😅 Keep up the good work !! And happy new year 2021! Hoping that the situation will change.

You two are a delight to watch! A, perhaps odd, pet peeve of mine (probably not helped by living in the Antipodes) was discovering that some watches (world timers I think they’re called) with cities around the world shown on the dial can be inaccurate. Without taking daylight saving into account London, UK & Auckland, NZ are 12 hours apart yet some of these show varying differences. I even went to the effort to approach Citizen directly about this but was completely flipped off by their pr staff

Great video. Even though it was a pet peeve episode, I really learned a lot. Thanks.

I kind of love this type of conversation and have watched few of these vids with Marc from Long Island, I follow you both on yt and ig but this kind of segment (long actually) doesn't bore me at all... it's like a Batman and Robin, Ying Yang, Heart and Soul kind of thing when you talk about its history and Marc talks about its Engineering side. How I wish you could do a collaboration on making your own watches too, re writing history for the next generation on how a watch should be; like surviving this pandemic etc... And maybe you could invite and join-in one more from the perspective of a real buyer who is about to buy his or her first watch or as a gift, something like that.

I could listen to you two talk for hours! One of my biggest pet peeves is Arabic numerals partially cut out to accommodate a complication.

I really enjoy these collabs you guys do. Very entertaining. I totally agree with having a standard lug size. Almost all of my watches are 22mm. Just recently started getting some 20mm. I've also made the mistake of getting a Seiko solar in gun metal. Takes me quite a few seconds to find the right angle to read the time. I have same problem with negative lcd displays.

I've had mineral crystal watches for years, and no scratches. I'm just always very careful with my watches and how I store them after wearing them ...

Truth. I've got three SKXs and pay no mind to two of them and those crystals are all clean too. My 007 gets more wrist time than any other watch, around the house, gardening, whatever, I wear that watch a ton because it's just som comfortable.

I guess it depends on what you do really. If you’re a doing manual labour or if you spend your time behind a desk. If you like to climb mountains of if you collect stamps.

For real, it really depends largely on how much physical activity you are doing with them. I have no scratches on the mineral or hardlex crystals from wearing them around the house, sure. But doing outdoor physical activity, it'll definitely happen.
