Today I'm joined once again by the man, the myth, the legend-Marc from Long Island Watch-for another laidback #watchtalk episode.
We discuss luxury vs affordable watches including: Is paying more worth it? How does this dynamic compare to other luxury goods? What defines a luxury watch? And what is the most crucial element that determines the luxury status of a product? Is it price, craftsmanship, quality, exclusivity or all of the above?
Marc also shares his experience with buying a Rolex Submariner, and why he's so dissatisfied with it compared to other watches that don't cost nearly as much. We also discuss our top picks for the best value in entry-level luxury watches for well-versed collectors and first-time buyers, and which brands offer the best bang for your buck. And because we're discussing luxury timepieces, look out for a special appearance from the preeminent lover of luster and opulence-the one and only Sir Hugo Mountbatten.

I have decided to limit my collection in something around USD 1k for a reason - where I live, it would be dangerous to go around with a USD 5k watch on the wrist... and I cannot imagine having an Omega or Rolex and not wearing it... this would just kill me to have it and not be able (or feel safe) to just wear the thing... at the end of the day, it is about the balance of what you like and can have fun with (I have watches in the range of USD 20 - 1k and love them all equally - they make me happy).

Hindsight is 20/20 how would you have known you would of enjoyed the Aquis more. I’m sure at each point in time you bought those watches you enjoyed them. It took you 15 watches to come to that realization. How do you know if saved up and bought the aquis upfront you wouldn’t buy any affordable pieces after. There had to be a reason you were drawn to those specific affordable pieces. I’m just saying from experience. I started with affordable pieces and finally bought and omega speedmaster and tudor black bay and still really enjoy my affordable pieces. Im still hunting for more watches both luxury and affordable. I guess I would say enjoy the journey of watch collecting.

In 1980 I purchased a GMT Master at the Navy Exchange in Sicily, for $550. A Submariner was $500. For me, it was a lot of money, but it didn’t seem like a ‘luxury’ purchase.. it was nice, but I beat the hell out of that thing and would do the same if I had another. I’d say it’s akin to owning a Ferrari and not driving the wheels off it. That’s my definition of luxury.. having something, pricey or not, that not everyone has, that brings you joy. I have two Bulova watches on the way. Both are orange, and I think will be fun to wear: Devil Diver & Surfboard Thx for a thought provoking video!

That's why I bought a Black Bay instead of a Submariner. I had the opportunity to choose and I just knew that spending double (more) the money and the fact that it was a Rolex would make me second guess wearing it and it would be in my mind constantly to be careful. I picked up the Tudor and have worn it almost every day over the last few years. Its scratched and banged up but keeps great time and still looks good. I've had a lot of enjoyment out of it that I dont know I wouldve gotten with the Sub.

When it comes to watches, "having more than you need" is a good way to define luxury. As you mention, that means most second watches would qualify as luxury watches, regardless of the price point. However, when looking at brands that offer good value, I think the versatility of the watch should play into that evaluation. My mom wore a two-tone DJ every day for forty years. Cartier may not seem like a value brand, but if you consider the cost-per-use of say, a Tank that you can wear nearly every day for the rest of your life, it's a sound investment.
@alcaponed16

Luxury watches also last many years with minimal maintenance most of the time. They're tough as hell and can be worn 24/7.
@TheSavagederek

I agree. Having a collection of reasonably expensive watches, can be seen as a luxury. Having one watch you personally love, whether £10 or £20,000, can seem like a luxury, to a person who would love that particular watch, but can't afford it.

Bizarrely the Rolex wait list, the inflated prices on certain models actually cheapens the brand, many buyers see Rolex as a status symbol and consequently obtaining a Rolex elevates people into believing they’ve reached an upper echelon club! Many other brands offer the same or better quality than Rolex, Omega springs to mind, quality just as good if not better, superior movements, certified at a higher level and Omega dares to do something different. Rolex just isn’t different enough for the price point.

I'm a bit weird, I have an inverse appreciation with my watches, I find the more affordable ones more impressive. I often stare at my £84 Orient Ray II, and wonder how it can have such flawlessly polished hands and perfectly placed indices. Though I love my 9K ceramic Sub, I'm not as impressed, more expectant. I do avoid name first, watch second brands like Gucci, Dan Wellington, Fossil etc, but nothing else is off the table, to hell with price.

It was 10 years later before I purchased my next watch of any sort: Omega Seamster 300 mid-size. I saved long and hard for the Rolex but threw the Omega purchase on a credit card. I think I've been climbing the ladder downwards! I started out with Rolex's and Omega's but in recent years I've been finding much more enjoyment in Hamilton's, Eterna's, Casio's and Seiko's...for me a watch just needs to be interesting, or aesthetically pleasing, or nostalgic, in short it just needs to mean something to me. I'm not really interested in other people's definitions of whether my possessions are luxury...I have a clock on my phone so to me an F91w is as much of a luxury as a Rolex...I don't need either, but I love both.

That’s interesting ! I traded down a Rolex Explorer 214270 (which I never clicked with) into an Omega SeaMaster 300 (which I liked, but at 41 mm it was a tad too big for me and having a €5500 watch not being worn much made me uncomfortable) Traded down to a Longines Conquest VHP (yes, a quartz watch 😉) as I wanted a worry-free watch to travel with. Not traveling much these days, I’ll give the Longines to my son But I realized along the way that I enjoyed wearing the €900 Longines, with under the radar date only perpetual calendar (so good), more than the Explorer And two years ago, I bought a Sinn 556, which is incredible watch and a Tudor BlackBay 58 is probably the upper limit of my watch collecting.

I absolutely love you guys. Two GENTLEMEN, talking about watches, without putting on airs. Understanding and supporting the hobby by not excluding anyone based on taste or the amount of money someone can spend. Supporting inclusiveness rather than exclusiveness. Bravo.

I could listen to these two all day. I liked the nod to working your way up and earning the luxury watch, a true appreciator of the timepiece would do this.

Awesome video! Love it when you and Marc collaborate, always great content. I got my first luxury (to me, as Marc said) watch last week, it is a Fortis Flieger Chronograph 597.10.141.2 second hand. I love it! It was a spur of the moment buy, but I've wanted a Fortis for ages now, thanks to you. I'm saving up for the Amadee-20 now! Keep up the awesome content both of you!

Great topic and excellent discussion about what defines luxury, and about how much enjoyment can be had wearing a watch at any tier. "Happiness is wanting what you have", and it seems that creating wonderful memories wearing whatever watch is on your wrist is often what makes that timepiece truly valuable in the long run.

I love watching you and Marc together; 2 different worlds with the common love of horology. Great fun and information! (also love the lack of pretense) I find that my Oris Aquis (39.5) is the one watch I can't stop wearing. I usually have a dozen or so watches but keep going back to the Aquis. Mine is the black on black all gloss model so it works for dressing up or surfing! I think Oris has found the perfect balance of quality for price with these newer model divers and I can't imagine finding a better watch for the money!

Fabulous and in-depth discussion that really does reflect so much of the watch collecting chatter. Great to hear both your views. I agree that it is price that is the primary determinate and other 'luxury' factors flow from that, like quality. However, the luxury price threshold certainly is unique to the individual collector. The brand discussion was spot on.

Good point about starting at the top and not appreciating lower tier watches. My first nice watch was an Accutron Spaceview in 1973, then many Casio digitals through the early 80's, then a Rolex Explorer in 1986. I went from basic to top drawer passing the entire lower tier in one fell swoop. Lower priced watches eluded me for decades. Good vid. Keep at it!

Purchased a Sinn 203 jubilee limited edition because of Urban Gentry and am blown away every day!.Best of both worlds. Bulit like a tank, super light all titanium and the colour absolutely matches everything. Keeps amazing time, is a chrono and a diver to 300m.. an affordable cross between a Daytona and a Submariner, but discreet and basically no one has one. There is also an Ar dehumidifying capsule as a bonus to guarantee watch is always dry. What a joy to wear everyday.. I can't thank you enough!

Double thumbs up for this video! 👍👍 Oris gets a mention for the first time since I've been a subscriber 🥳 I thought maybe you had some kinda beef with the brand... Love my Aquis, it's done 4 years of faultless daily service. Another terrific video guys, splendid stuff.

My $500 Seiko was an incredible luxury for me. Seiko PADI Turtle. In my income bracket it was a HUGE reach. I'm in disabled housing and drive a 20 year old car. A real diver was a lifelong dream. I see my reflection in the window of the next car and I still can't believe I have it. Finding out rich people think its a crap watch to wear to the beach hurt a bit, but I still love it.

Thanks to TGV and Marc for another splendid video. The conversation about the price of the opera tickets is interesting. It must be considered that great operatic productions require up to several months of musical rehearsals, both instrumental and vocal and choir; construction and assembly of props, costumes, scene, lighting, etc. In addition to the stay of the musicians, singers, director, equipment in general and their maintenance. All this affects the price of the tickets and attempts are made to make a profit with several representations. Opera is undoubtedly almost complex as cinema but done live. Hence the ability to provide an aesthetic experience of that magnitude.
