Round 2 Decathlon Top Picks Video: • Top Picks For Decathlo...
Since I released my video on the Decathlon down jacket, A LOT of you have requested I do a video that goes over other Decathlon gear I think is a good value. I spent a ton of time in one of their stores and combing the website last fall to find 9 pieces of gear I think are a great value, functional, and versatile. In the video, I also go over my experience with Decathlon customer service and some information from a chat I had with Decathlon about price increases that hit in February 2020.
For reference, I am wearing a size large for all the gear (other than the size XL down jacket). My stats are: 5 ft 10 inches, 185 lbs, 40 inch chest, and 33 in waist.

Being a scout leader in Romania, Decathlon has been a blessing because before the arrival of Decathlon kids would buy equipment from general stores and had a lot of issues with their tents, backpacks, boots and so on. Decathlon items are reliable enough and cheap enough so the kids parents buy them proper equipment which was difficult before. Some of their products are quite heavy and lack some features, but they tend to be better and better with time. The FORCLAZ/TREK line is quite impressive to be honest and also the alpinism oriented subbrand - Simond has some great gear that also works for backpacking

Hi Justin, I agree with you regarding Decathlon. I have been using Decathlon clothing and camping gear in the UK for a long time. They are a major retailer over here in the UK. I have tested some of their products such as the Down 100 Jacket , inflatable sleeping mattress, waterproof jacket and hiking trousers whilst wild camping. All performed really well. You do not have to pay huge amounts of money and their products are equal if not better than the well known premium brands. Thanks for the video. 👍

Great video. Long time Decathlon fan here. I've been using most of the gear on your list for a while already. Down jacket: Been using this one for years on my hikes at camp or at higher altitude when it gets cold. Also in winter when there is no precipitation as outer layer at the peak. Overgloves: mandatory on many trail races, and they are really great. They always go in my pack when some rain is expected and help with additional warmth in windy conditions. Fleece Gloves: Ultra light, very cheap and very comfy. I bring these also on my trail runs Merino T-shirt: I have the long sleeve version. On a very windy cloudy trip in the mountains I was surprised by this shirt. Almost kept me warm the entire day without overheating. Also great as a base layer during the night. I would say you can feel a little bit of an itch, but it's not very noticeable Merino Hat: Like this one really a lot under my helmet when skiing. However since it's a one size only, don't get it if you have a big head > 58cm. Grid Fleece: Very light and soft and comfy and breathable, also looks great imo in other colors than black. Gloves: These are fine for most temperatures above 5-10 degrees C, however for colder conditions you need the over gloves or thicker ones. Decathlon is active in Europe for a very long time already and their prices have gone up considerably since they started, sometimes even approaching the premium brands with discount. But on the other hand they also have increased the quality and range of the products a lot. Here in Romania you see everyone on the mountain with their stuff. I'd only say that their sleep equipment is a bit too heavy. They don't really have a lightweight inflatable mattresses and their tents are a bit on the heavy side but good quality. Related to the foam mattrass they now have a Thermarest Z-lite knock off which in my opinion is even better (wider, lighter and 1/3rd of the price). Also I can recommend their budget 2 person tent. In Europe it's only about 25 euros and I used it at altitude in many stormy nights and it held up perfectly. Can't beat it for the price, though it's a bit heavy at 2Kg.

I purchased the MEN’S SYNTHETIC MOUNTAIN TREKKING PADDED JACKET - MT100 HOODED -5°C £25 $30 less expensive and 80g heavier For me synthetic is the only way to go in English wet/cold climate And for long expeditions in sub-zero dry/cold, I also prefer synthetic, as your jacket gets damp from body perspiration, and after a few days down begins to clump and loose loft I am very pleased with the performance of this jacket I obviously would recommend this jacket better than the down

Used to be wary of Decathlon, but I’m slowly changing my mind. Got their Trek900 hiking trousers, the waterproof over gloves (which I really rate), some trekking poles; my children have the hiking gloves (like yours) and I’m considering buying myself a pair, plus liner gloves, and also the merino hat and some short sleeve merino tops like the one you’re wearing. We also have some of their water gear and no complaints here either. Their waterproof over trousers look great, and their equivalent of your OR ski trousers look decent too. Hell, even their hiking boots and 50-litre plus backpacks, and I’m likely to buy their one person tent at 1.2kgs for under a hundred quid... If I have to kit out any relative to drag them along on a hike/camp I will probably buy them decathlon kit

I have been buying Decathlon gear for years now and have found it generally very good. I’ve bought jackets, fleeces, gloves and other accessories from them. The only down side is, that stuff sells out quick (for obvious reasons) and you can’t always find what you want, so multiple visits are often needed. But having said that, the savings over the Big Name brands (which have massive profit margins) are really good.

As an American living in France, Decathlon is my playground. I love going there. Also since they've expanded into North America, they've been coming out with good quality/low price ultralight gear. They have just come out with a 1-person tent 1,3 kg for 130€. I don't know what that is in dollars but it's pretty cheap. Plus Decathlon has a year guarantee with all its products.

@@JustinOutdoors Hey thanks for your response. I took a look at their UL 1 person tent today here in Paris. It looks good for its price but I don't think it's for larger people. Decathlon is superior to other popular sport markets. The best thing about them is that they divide their shops into a sport categories and have products designed directly to that sport, not just "multipurpose general use products" which are the best for everything and nothing. Mostly because this company and their exellent products I started to collect my trekking andf hiking gear and go on the trips. btw, these TREK500 gloves are my all-time favorite product. During cold days, I use them like the second skin, not taking off for hours even during driving my car or doing different things. Just awesome.

I have tried some of their gear out of curiosity - Their shipping can be pricey so catch a deal there if you can. All of their Euro sizes run quite small. I had an XL Merino/Synthetic sweater, My M sized GF took it over because it was just that small. Also some of the base layers I have, have not shown well after maybe a handful of washings. So durability may be an issue. Also got the 2 second tent, again just to try and have an extra tent as we hammock camp a lot. My 5'7" son had to sleep corner to corner in it - it is quite short. So just be aware. He has had much better luck than I have...

I have a lot of troubles recommending anything other than the Frogg Toggs UL2 rain suit. For Under $20 USD, it performs amazingly. I've had a bunch more expensive rain jackets, but they need constant DWR treatment and I'm always worried I'm going to wreck them. Even if tear my frogg toggs, it's super easy to repair with duct tape and seam sealer. I forget honestly forget what sizes I bought for the gloves and I cut all the labels off :S. I want to say I got the softshell gloves and the overgloves both in a size large. I live in France and buy Decathlon stuff for years. I'd say they improved their quality a lot when it comes to trekking gear. There are some more efficient, light and fancy high-end items but bang for the buck is really good indeed (on another hand I often look for example at REI items thinking "too bad they don't sell them here" ;) ). One thing I'd like to ask to you is : did you check the Forclaz down jacket's weight by yourself?

Hi Justin, the content in your channel is so great I had to subscribe. I'm interested in purchasing the Trek 500 Over-Gloves (mitts) you show in your video, but I'm dubious about how to size them. Two questions: 1) What glove size do you usually wear for softshell gloves like the green Trek 500 MTN you show previously in the video? 2) What size of Trek 500 Over-Gloves did you got to wear over these soft shell gloves? I usually wear size 8 gloves (which sometimes is an M and sometimes is between S and M) for a sizing that allows some degree of outdoor dexterity. It seems like that's how you sized the green soft shell gloves in your video. I want to use the Over-Gloves (similarly as you) to put over soft shell gloves when the weather turns sour, but I don't want a very big fit. As these mittens come in XS/S and M/L sizes, I want to make sure my hands will not swim in the M/L. And if that is the case, then the XS/S might be more appropriate. Sorry for the long post and many thanks for your feedback.
@JustinOutdoors

Are those waterproof trek 500 mitten shell gloves also breathable? I like that it has grip but only one layer not a lot of info. Between the rei GTX minimalist rain mitten.... More layers. More weight but no grip... More durable/better breathing? More than twic the price. Not sure what to get if it is breathable and seems ok on durability and grips are nice please let me know. I already screwed up getting Montbell wind mitts...
@JustinOutdoors

They are as breathable as waterproof membranes can me (decent but not great). I find goretex to be one of the worst membranes for breathability. I'm not putting them through a lot of harsh conditions durability-wise, but they held up great for me over an entire winter of use.

Decathlon has some excellent products on a budget! I've got some handy camp towels from Decathlon which do their job, and cost just a fraction of the fancy camp towels. Personally not sure about their down, i haven't been able to find out where they source their down from, which plays a big part for me in getting gear or not. It might be perfectly fine but i can't seem to find much or anything about it. I also have a Quechua Inflatable camp pillow (like 160 grams) with padding on top, kind of has that cotton ''real pillow'' feel yet is inflatable and packs down to almost nothing. Been using this one for a long time :) I even wash the cover from time to time so it smells like home haha I just noticed i hadn't subbed to your channel yet, love your videos Justin :)

The down is RDS certified, so it has the ethically sourced label. You at least know it isn't coming from live plucking (although I've read duck down is rarely, if ever, live plucked). I've been wanting to try out the pillow! Thanks for the sub!
