I have one, finished its 2nd flight today. First thing is the Cg stated in the manual is way nose heavy, Im at the rear most cg of 60mm as stated by the book and its still very nose heavy. the eflite crescendo with similar size, wing and everything has cg stated as far back as 71mm in the manual. So, Id recommend starting at 60-62.5mm cg for the toprc lightning for your maiden. Im flying 4S 1300mah. My advice, dont even bother with 3S as 4S is way better and easier/safer to launch. Be careful where you land, the foam is super fragile/dent prone. I already have used lightweight white filler all over the place on mine. I tried spoilerons today putting the ailerons up as I high as I could while still maintaining left and right aileron control, but I noticed instead of slowing it down, it just makes it glide longer and gets rocking wings when approaching stall speed. Could be because the wing has 1.5 angle of incidence to it, so all spoilerons are doing is reducing the angle of attack and reducing drag instead of increasing drag. None the less, even without spoilers and a nose heavy plane, it still slows down really well and has nice control. This is my warmliner trainer before I go to my carbon fiber hotliner, so far it is fitting the bill at being 1/8 the cost of a molded hotliner.

I have the EDF version and the quality is excellent. Found the lightning as well and it too flies very well. Very well reinforced and best foam finish I've seen

I have owned this model for over a year now and as you say it is nice to fly. I have cut flaps into the wing, there is just enough room for them, they make landing a lot move comfortable. nice review.

It has a very pleasant amount of speed and flies very smoothly. Also those deadstick landings looked very sweet. Nice flying and nice video!

I've had one of these for a couple of years and I love it! Fast and it flies like it's on rails. I particularly like the swooshing noise it makes in a fast shallow dive! I've not yet felt the need to try 4s but this review has got me itching to try.

I bet you'll find it's faster with the motor off in a dive. It looks very similar to my Flyzone Rapide, I can use the prop as a brake at those speeds! Can't wait to see it on the slope, hoping for a windy day so you can really wring it out.

Thanks for the video and especially the telemetry. Looks good on 4S. As for the motor it would be nice to be able upgrade it and I have previously asked Century UK about that but they were very cagey. What they supply as stock looks custom/proprietary and I think any swap will require some modding. Also I noticed the thin profile, I'm glad you didn't lose sight of it!

Not sure about the Top sky but the century UK motor mount is very complex with a double ply firewall that is clamped to a flange moulded into the foam on the inside of the fuselage, the clamps also hold the motor mount. The motor spec is also different to the top sky. Absolute nightmare to repair or modify, ask me how I know!!

@@kevinlane The Top Sky looks like a typical example of Chinese -intellectual property theft- product cloning, so I suspect they've used the same mold but different electronics. Regardless though it would be interesting to see how the mount on this is constructed.

Very nice! With regard to speed, these warmliners are often faster with power off. They're typically set up (motor Kv & prop pitch) mainly for a decent climb rate, so the prop actually starts to act as a brake at higher speeds - try some diving passes with the motor stopped and prop folded :-) I have a 1.6m V tail warmliner (17 years old now!) that goes like a rocket on 3S, but that's using the power on the way up and motor off on the way down. Spoilerons do make a huge difference on landing. I'll not spam your channel but I've posted two short videos showing mine in action - search on 'Virage' if you're interested. If I ever break it the Lightning 1500 would be my choice as a replacement now - love those internal linkages for rudder & elevator.

Hi Andrew I've noticed the prop size on this is much smaller than the old st model blaze and durafly excalibur which swing 12 or 13 inch propeller Have you tried a bigger prop for better vertical climbs?

Not yet, it does have plenty of headroom in the current draw so could handle a bigger prop

Hope you had a good Xmas Andrew. I love the look of that thing, but the speedy type flying isn’t exactly my bag. Something that looks like that should be about half a kilo tops and be able to go fast just from a steep dive, like a peregrine falcon.

Seems a good combo to me - fast zippy advanced model in 1500mm or a more sedate soarer when flown with the 2100mm wing.

i cheated and watched another maiden of this one earlier.artic/rc i think it was, was using a 4S on his. was a real speed demon and he was doing all the 3D moves a stunt plane would do. its a winner me thinks. yours sounds much quieter than his. 4S vs 3S?

They're pretty versatile - they obviously fly faster than a soarer but are quite efficient so can still make use of thermals. Then if you fly it as an aerobatic model (mostly using power to climb, then doing manoeuvres on the way down) they're way more efficient than a standard sports model - so you get long flight times from a relatively small pack. I mostly fly my warmliner from a rougher field where wheeled planes (apart from my Tundra!) would have problems taking off and landing.

nice - but surprisingly low power even on 4s. Did you calibrate the throttle? maybe try a different ESC, I find it suspiciously lacking in power cheers

Hello Andrew. The Lightning is a lovely plane. I have two. I agree the foam construction on the Lightning is the firmest off all my models.There is another feature that is worth mentioning. The spinner is quite unique in its construction hollow allowing cooling air to flow directly onto the motor. I am not sure if its my setup but I found that its not too happy flying slow. I have had a few tip stalls with dire consequences. I am a bit of a Top RC hobby fan. www.toprchobby.com/ I have their Skycruise 2400 and the KDW 280 quad. The Skycruise .Has a massive presence in the air and is a big gentle plane perfect for lazy afternoon slope soaring. The quad is very fast and very stable. They have EDF powered 1200 mm wingspan version of the Lightning. Its called the Swift that's good for well over the 100km/ hour speeds. I have been to the TopRC factory in Shenzhen. I was able to fly the Swift there.

I forgot to mention that Top RC hobby make a tiny 9gram. Yes that's 9gram FPV camera-transmitter unit called a Spotter. I have the version one. The version two with built in OSD looks really good
