Definitely agree with this. Out of the 6 very valid reasons you mentioned, personally I have found stale gasoline fuel to be a popular one. I have had so many mowers come onto my repair shop with this issue over the years. I generally get this issue when mowers come out of winter storage where the gas has been sitting in the machine over the winter months just going stale. After draining the fuel tank and the carburetor float bowl I can usually get them going again. All your points are spot on in my opinion. Thanks. Craig
I have had a few gallons of gas for 3-4 years with half a bottle of stabilizer in it. Would run just fine on Metal Carbs mowers I have had. Still have a mower that is 1yr old and after 3-4 pumps on the primer, fires right up and stays running, can't use it because the deck Rotted after just 3-4 months ( Walfart special ). Yet the Newer one ( bought Feb ) with the Plastic Carb ran for 30 minutes, I stopped for the day, next day would not start anymore, another Walfart special... been trying the past 4 months to get it going again. Now my Brand New one bought today, from Tractor Supply, Ran for About 20 seconds and will no longer fire. Will spit and sputter after 30 pumps of the primer but not fire.
This is a great example of how to produce a basic troubleshooting video, I had to sift through a lot of videos to get here, you won a subscriber with this!

I'm a retired small engine repairman , listen people use Sti-bil gas stabilizer and sea-foam in your gas also at all times along with 93 octane minus the ethanol and I guarantee less problems with your small engines .
Sir, I have been using Stabil gas stabilizer for years and Sea Foam starting last year. But when I have a bunch of dumb fucks setting up my new mower and lying to me about the oil saying that it is ready to go when I found out the hard way it wasn't. This store likes to pull shit on people anyhow. I will never buy another mower from those bastards. Hope they go out of business because this isn't the first time they pulled crap on me and they won't get a 3rd time.
If your lawn mower has been sitting unused for the winter and in the spring try to start it and it won't start. Then remove the spark plug, take a syringe and squirt a little fuel into the cylinder, reinstall the spark put and re-connect the spark plug wire. Pull the cord and it should start. I have do this every spring to my lawn mower and edger.
hey @Douggg1000, just wanted to say thanks for the tip. i had this problem trying to resurrect a lawnmower in slumber - I was unable to work out if it was fuel or spark. squirting some fuel directly into the cylinder got it started and led me to an eventual diagnosis that fuel delivery was the issue. I was then able to follow the path find the fault. thanks again
My poulan pro wouldn't start after sitting for a couple of months. Went through all the troubleshooting and after several hours finally just poured some gas on the air filter. Started right up! Had to let it idle for a bit to run out the lines, but it worked.
Wow! My cheapo wouldn't start upon first use today (as every year). This worked! Carburetor will still need cleaning as it struggled to keep running. But it got me thru the first day. Thanks. I do have the foam filter. I wouldn't try it on a paper one.
How to check your mower . 1 is there old fuel in the fuel tank . ..If there is it needs to be removed and the carburetor and fuel system needs to be cleaned and over hauled 2 Squirt some fresh fuel in the carb and try starting the mower ..If it starts there IS NOT a problem with the coil , spark plug or valves 3 should the motor not continue to run then refer back to #1 . 4 IF you hit something with the blade you will need to inspect the under side of the mower a. UNPLUG The spark plug b. turn mower on its side (WITH THE AIR FILTER FACING UP and THE OIL FILL SIDE Facing DOWN . c. inspect blade if its bent it WILL need to be replaced but before doing that you MUST check the output shaft to see if it is bent . take a tape measure and measure from the flat side of the bolt holding the blade to the side of the unit in several places around the entire 360 degrees of rotation . the measurement should be the same . if it is not the shaft is bent and will need to be replaced .
Thank you - I had a broken key in a small engine I was using on a bike and had been completely frustrated in my attempts to shim the drive shaft and have the key catch again. This video made me realize I could just drill out what was left of the old key and place a new one in top to bottom of the flywheel - many thanks!
Forgot to mention 3 things: 1. Oil- check the oil level to make it's not too high or too low also check the color of the oil to ensure it's not oil if it's dark and sludgy it needs to be changed 2. Fuel line- make sure the fuel line is not damaged if it is you should replace it 3. Air filter- if the air filter is dirty you should replace it sometimes a thorough cleaning may work but it may need replacement Hope was helpful :)
I had a Huscavarna law mower and I this to eliminate problems with carburetor. I purchased the hi tech carburetor spray. WIth the mower running I would remove the air filter and then spray directly into the intake. This kept my carburetor clean by keeping the gunk from the carburetor. Remember the spray is highly flammable so just use short bursts,
I just got a Remington push gas mower and it won't start I would like to learn how to fix myself since I ain't gotalot of money to be spending on something like that
I stopped at a garage sale this morning. They had a non running lawnmower. I pulled the cord and it had compression. I bought it for 10$ I watched this video and went out to try my luck. It was out of gas. Runs perfectly
Mine is a Brand New TB105B from Tractor Supply. Added the Oil, put Gas in it, Primed it about 10 times, Pulled the cord 3-4 times, Ran for About 20 seconds, would not start after that no matter how many times I primed it.. and if I primed it 30 times, it would spit and sputter but Not Catch for starting... Yet I have a Walfart Special, before the Plastic Carb BS..., that has been sitting a year because the Deck Rotted out after just 3 months... that Starts right up first pull after 3-4 pumps on the primer and Another Walfart Special that is only 4 months old, that only ran for 30 minutes and then would not start the next day because it has the New Plastic Carbs...
i have a briggs and stratton 650 series 190cc engine and its very hard to start it only starts if you pull it VERY hard i think it needs a new ignition coil but im not sure.
The wire from the starter wasn’t connected so I soldered the wire back to the starter. Then come to find out that wire had disconnected from the Engine.🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️😢😢 so I reconnected the wire so I soldered those wires together. It started right up with no problems..... thank you for making this video now I can find out what is wrong with my second mower.

I avoid issues by "cleaning my spark plug" in the spring and checking/regapping it if needed. My plugs typically last years. My mower was surging badly. I pulled the fuel bowl and found bits of grass. Once cleaned no more surging. Whenever I buy fuel, as soon as I get home I add the required amount of stabilizer.
Everytime i try to mow the grass i have to spend 2days fixing it done everything on here still wont work its about to meet the sledgehammer! 4yrs i believe that lawnmower has had it out for me this whole time
I had a problem not covered in this video. The automatic shut off wire had stretched to the point where it would not allow the mower to start. I wedged a piece of wood under the wire,, close to the handle to take up the slack. The mower started on the next pull.

Unscrew the spark plug, tilt the mower up so that you can pour some fuel directly into the spark plug hole. Screw the spark plug back in. Place back level and then pull the cord. Preferably do it outside due to fire risk. Worked like a charm for me.
First for me. Brand new out of box Craftsman. I'm not mechanical. I just expect things to work. Cord would not pull. Went through all the instructions...How hard should it be? Pull the cord...have been mowing my lawn for 50 years. Called the store where I purchased. No surprise...they don't answer phones any more. Finally loaded it back in car with mower tank full of gas. I got to customer service counter and suggested they answer phones. I politely asked the clerk to please have someone come to car and show me how to start the mower or just give me my money back. Rep from the garden department finally went to my car as I asked him to help bring it in since he couldn't give me an answer. He did state that there were a couple other people who called to bring theirs back as they had the same problem. End of story...as he is unloading he notices something and said let me check something...As it turned out...When Craftsman ships they retract the handle for more room and it extends to blades and keeps them from turning until you extend the handle. Started up immediately! I was stunned...#1 Craftsman should make that a "front and center bold type page 1" and #2, the store was taking returns for this issue? Communication? Lack of training? Whatever...was glad to finally get my lawn mowed.
You literally saved me a nasty headache and a long trip to the hardware store. I recently bought a Craftsman mower and the exact thing happened to me; the cord would not pull no matter what I did! While I had some experience fixing mowers, I kept thinking 'this is a new mower. It should NOT have any problems whatsoever.' I looked at your comment while trying other means of fixing my lawn mower and saw the exact same problem: the handlebars are extended down past the blades. After pulling the bars up, my lawn mower works fine and cuts grass like butter. If Craftsman wants to stay in business, they really should mention it in the manual in LOUD BOLD LETTERS! Thanks aplenty, kind stranger!
Great video. Thanks for posting. My craftsman push mower when you pull the rope it may take 25 pulls and then it tries to start but all you hear is noise like it wants to start. Any thoughts? Also do I need a special tool to remove my spark plug? I will try that first. I am a woman trying to fix things on my own. I do own a few tools. Any thoughts on my mower problem is appreciated. The repair shops around here see a woman and think we are all stupid and will charge us hundreds of dollars for basically doing very little. I am tired of being used, abused and over charged. Thank you for your time. Be well during this coronavirus outbreak. 😀

My mower starts when it's hot. What about having a little too much oil in the crank case? Not my problem but the problem where I bought the mower and that guy that works there put too little oil in when he told me everything is ready to go that I can start mowing, so I complained after the thing died and then he added too much and now I have to cold start using Engine start. I also put in a new spark plug because I see oil on the other one which is telling me there is too much oil. I drained out part of it today, but I don't know if it will be enough until the oil settles. I always use a stabilizer. They acted like I was too stupid to set up a mower when I have set up my own mowers in the past.
Lol that's what I said. The following day after using the lawn mower my legs and arms were aching 😁. Though mines have the self push feature. But I don't use it as much.
I thought I’d be nice and mow my parents lawn since they’ve been out of town for a month. I was able to start it no problem and mow the knee high grass, but after one row, the blades weren’t turning, so I shut it off, not thinking, I turned it on it’s side to grab the stuck grass out of the blade. I noticed gas (I assume) was leaking out of the gas cap on the brick. So I turned it back over and now it won’t start. I can see some gas in the tank, but maybe it’s just not enough to start it? (Hopefully). It’s 110° and they told me it was too hot to mow, but I didn’t want my dad to have to do it when he gets home. Hopefully I didn’t break it! Suggestions?
@@manofculture4945 Yes thankfully it just needed to dry out, and the Arizona heat dries up anything quick! I went inside for 45 minutes to cool off from the sun, and when I went back outside, it was working again like new!
When none of the the tips works then replace the lawn mower with a new one. I brought my craftsman lawn mower a year ago. Over the winter I stored it in the garage but the Covid-19 apparently attacked it and it won't start. No PPE or mask for it. I can't find a ventilator for it. So perhaps a new mower.
I have heard different values with ohms readings (multimeter) for small engine spark plugs (mower, snow blower, etc.). Can you set it straight for me? Some say a good spark plug should read 500 to 5000 ohms. Others say 4000 to 8000 ohms. And still, others say 5000 to 15000 ohms. Which is it? Or, is there another standard of values to use?
Mine does not work because it is a briggs and Stratton motor. One year old piece. My 10 year old Toro still turns on first try but the self propelled stopped working it felt like pushing my car to mow the lawn.
My mower quit while mowing the lawn. Then, I hear some metal parts while wiggling the mower, found broken pieces of connecting rod. Is it worth to replace the rod for a year old mower purchased $459 brand new?
I push the primer bulb 10 times, pull it, if it starts it will run just fine. If I wait more than a few seconds to pull it, it won't start. It won't start until the next day. Then push 10 times and it starts first pull. If I pull it once and then prime it 10 times it won't start. If I stop it for more than a few seconds, it won't start back up. Has never started with the recommended three primer push. New spark plug, air filter. New gas.
These are the top 6 reasons we have found from our customers and extensive research. There can be additional reasons. We always recommend to check the regular maintenance and upkeep first.
I have a 500e 140cc and I put a new carb an air filter changed plug and oil and gas but still doesn’t start plug gives spark prime bulb is priming engine will turn but not starting
How do you change the gas on a Yardworks 163CC 3-in-1 High Wheel Gas Push Lawn Mower. It was left outside in the winter. Its brand new used only a few times last summer. I was told there may be water in the gas.
take the top off the gas tank, get a turkey baster and use it to remove the old gas and any junk in the bottom, then refill with new premium grade gas along with a gas treatment like seafoam, check the air filter to make sure mice have not used it as a nest, pull the spark plug and gently clean it with an emory board or nail file to remove any rust and then wipe it with a clean paper towel, and try to start it. if that fails try spraying some carb cleaner into the carb. if that fails or if it starts but runs bad then the carb needs to be pulled, taken apart and cleaned and then reassembled. after using the mower you should put a plastic cover like a plastic bag or even a plastic garbage can lid or tub over the motor to keep rain from getting down into it.
What if you just bought it yesterday and it won't start. This is my THIRD mower in a month that are brand new and either turns off while I'm mowing or just won't start. First two were craftsman and my third one that I just bought yesterday is a Troy built
yes, but if it starts when cold, but not when hot, the coil is going bad. I have that issue on a 5hp B&S right now. oddly I could disconnect the stop switch and it would run fine until I reconnected the stop switch. so I replaced the stop switch with a part from a junker and it started fine when cold, but not when hot. so the stop switch is not the problem, it is the coil and this is even though the coil will test as ok on my multimeter. I ordered a new B&S coil, cost was $41 (ouch). but the original stop switch may have also been bad too.
@@tedwilliford7218 how do you check a coil I have a weedeater that won't start and appears to have no spark but it's big job to take apart so I want to do all the checking of other things first. It wouldn't start so I replaced the gas lines and it started right up but then the next time no cigar and I can't get it to fart even tried starting juice nope. So I figure the coil is it
@@ameriatucker2504 I did a search as to the differences in ethanol and non ethanol gas, according to the search results, ethanol seems to absorb moisture while non ethanol tends to not.
A few years back I bought a famous brand lawn mower, with 43,000 reviews, very highly rated by CR and others. I bring it home unbox it, put oil and 93 octane no-methanol gas in it, regardless of what I did, it won’t start. I checked the spark, spark plug and other items, which won’t violate the warranty, but to no avail. Returned it to HomeDepot. The mechanic there confirmed my finding, and HomeDepot gave me refund. I went and bought a famous brand Li-ion battery-operated electric mower. It is now six years, and I have not looked behind. BaBye gas mowers. 😆
Toro mower starts on first pull, runs like a champ, but refuses to start via electric start. Has new Battery and new Alternator. No broken wires that I have been able to find. Any ideas. I am lost as to what is preventing this engine from starting by electric start.
I’ve seen another yt video about this, you have to push the blades around a bit yourself,Make you disconnect spark plug though and get a long piece of wood then shove it under a push the blades. I’ll try to find a link later
OH !!! thanks a lot :-) .. for all that !! .. full time employee got no time for this hassle. I will just invest on electric mower !!! I'm guessing my only problems will be narrow down to two things battery and motor done. my god too many ridiculous engineering behind that thing !!
If the motor isn't seized, it could be the brake is on a little or a lot. The handle you pull back when starting releases a brake on the flywheel. Make sure you pull that handle all the way back and also know that it might have developed a little slack in the line. The other thing that can just about jerk your arm off is if the flywheel key got sheared.
Dennis Skomorucha first make sure fuel is getting to the carburetor. If you have fuel getting to the float bowl you will need to take off the carburetor and remove the contaminants or blockages from the carburetor.
@@nasnow4282 also those clear lines usually look like they are always empty, take the line that goes from the tank into the carb and see if gas is leaking out
