The Smoking Tire heads to El Mirage Dry Lake Bed with the new CTS-V Wagon to see just how fast the world's best sleeper will go. And we bring a tuned C6 Corvette along for comparison!
Wasn't watching TST back in 2011, just came here from today's video. Wow, the intro. *edit* Wow, Matt's been rocking those Dillon Optics for a long time.
I just wanna thank you guys for letting me know this place existed. Did 148 with my father in the car this past summer. Definitely one of my favorite memories from our time in California.
David Peck Just filled it up with 93 octane and filled the tires to maximum pressure. Other than that, just take some time to find a decent stretch of smooth dirt.
pity cadillac won't make a wagon out of the current cts - v. Speaking as a BMW fanboy I'd have a hard time not choosing a CTS-V wagon over most newer M5/M6s
i never knew this thing had red lights that chase the needle up the speed gauge. all cars should have this!!!! lol so simple but it's the little touches and attention here that make this car stand out!!! Matt, with the obvious success your new t.v show is going to get, i am sure we will see you rockin' a CTS-V Wagon any time now!
I would of got a 1998 STS with passion if wasnt the front wheel drive, since 70's there were almost 30 years before Caddy had to start doing RWD again, thank god! Im a big fan of the CTS-V wagon, and I believe when I grow up a little bit (im 21 now) and probably move to USA im gonna get me one of them! I cant think of a better family car! THANK YOU GM!
I love wagons. I drive a VW W8 wagon. Its quick but like Matt, i would give almost anything to have the CTS-V wagon. I'll bet it even gets equal or better gas mileage than my W8. Smoking Tire has the best car reviews I've seen. Keep it up.
@weed46 it's called using facts for effect. All of those facts I listed are 100% true, but it doesn't mean that the Caddy is necessarily faster on a track. That's the downside of having over 4,000 lbs to lug around.
@pwsparrow some of the secondary materials on the inside are a little cheap, it's too quiet given the amount of power it produces, and the fuel economy was some of the worst we've observed in any car. We had it for 7 days, and put 9 tanks of fuel in it. On the day that we shot this video, I burned through an entire tank of premium in around 60 miles, which is about 4 mpg.
Its amazing the level of quality this show has in all areas, top notch host, all the best cars, interesting stories etc. etc. all this in a youtube show! Your work is greatly appreciated Matt, keep on keepin' on.
Finally a good video from you guys. I have not been a fan of your prior work, but this is by far a step in the right direction. This was much better commentary from you Matt. I hope your future videos are this good if not better.
@Greendude33 I think you can easily predict what the next Corvette will be: a V8 up front, manual transmission in the middle, and the drive wheels out back. Hopefully they will improve on the horrid automatic transmission, and update the interior significantly. Other than that, I'd bet there won't be any surprises.
@weed46 it's not pointless, if you have a point. My point about the caddy is that it has a very powerful engine, and I'm using a Gallardo and an Enzo as a basis for comparison, citing true facts. I never said it's faster around a race track than either of those cars, nor would I. But that doesn't mean I can't use horsepower and torque numbers to show how powerful a station wagon is compared to a supercar.
@gammaga The E63 and M5 Estate, as well as the RS6 Avant, are not available in the US, so I've never tried any of them. The V wagon is exceptionally good and I'd be perfectly happy to drive one for 2 years. And they don't all cost the same. The V wagon is quite a bit cheaper than its German competition.
@worldwidechris they are called Dillon Optics, and you can purchase them through the link on our website. If you use that link, we send you a free TST T-Shirt!
I have a 1964 Chevelle Malibu wagon, and i must say that is one sweet looking car, and it performs very well too with a 327 and a 4 speed muncie, but it is nowhere near as amazing as this. He's right on the fact that wagons died a long time ago, and its awesome to see a new spin on them .
@twobimmers we're actually a step ahead of you. One of our two lav's broke the morning of this shoot, so we had to use our backup (not as good) for the in car and out of car. But last week we bought brand new sets of mic's so we're good now.
@gammaga The RS6 is not sold in the US in any form, the M5 and E63 are sold in the US as sedans only. And while the CTS-V is very affordable, the cheapest 500+ horsepower car you can buy in the US is the Shelby GT500, which starts at about $48,000.
@AudiABTr8 They are called Dillon Optics, and they are a sponsor of The Smoking Tire. If you click on the "Dillon" banner on our main web site, it will take you to their site and if you order a pair with that link you'll get a free TST T-Shirt too.
For the first time in a long while, american cars are really starting to attract me. They have finally started taking tips from foreign automakers and are stepping up the quality. CTS-V, Vette, Camaro or BuicK Regal (Opel insignia) I would spend my money on those cars
@lawsonmahoney that's either a major fuck-up for them, or they are referring to the whole model range of the 911, in which AWD is an option in some variants.
Matt I've been following your shows since the beginning, and i must say the production values and the overall quality of your episodes have been stellar. Keep it up, wont be surprised to see you leave youtube in the past and reach TV coverage.
@1IdeaAhead fortunately, the ride quality is fantastic from the magnetic ride control suspension. In "tour" mode it's more absorbent than the Mercedes E550 coupe we tested a few months back, and in "sport" mode it's tight and responsive, and very easy to drift.
The CTS-V wagon is amazing. I own an e63, and am buying a CTS-V Wagon this weekend. It's truly amazing. I will keep the e63...

how come you guy's don't have more notoriety? you produce an awesome show...with a great presenter, editor, director, and still, you're "only" an online show... that's a BIG injustice...
It is. I found a wagon (2012), had Lund Cadillac in Phoenix do their 18% performance upgrade (640HP...) - all under warranty, and drove it home to SoCal and had a total blast. Just sold my 2009 e63 and not looking back. This is a fantastic car. I'm upgrading to 20" HREs and lowering it 3/4", and that's it. It sounds like an F16 at full throttle.
@TheVtieg6 I've heard of delimited M5's hitting 200 before, I'm sure the shorter gearing and higher redline of the M5 compared to the CTS-V has something to do with it.
@Acct1941 The decision to run said V8 through a Front wheel drive platform, combined with the awful build quality and flagrant parts-bin cheapness is what I was getting at.
@jonen9494 I don't know why everyone assumes that because I'm an American, I'm partial to American cars. I like good cars, regardless of which country they are from and what badges they wear. The Corvette and the CTS-V happen to be two very good American cars (and there are plenty of bad ones too), just like there are good and bad cars from Germany. I've spent lots of time in the E60 M5, and I can definitively say the CTS-V is more fun to drive and a much better value, and it's faster.
@mike88g1 When I write responses, I take the time to use proper spelling and grammar as a sign of respect to those who I'm speaking to. It's nice when people choose to use the same respect when writing back to me.
For less than $10K you can mod a current gen CTS-v into 700 hp+ (pulleys, headers, tune, intake, etc.). Just a tune would cost you that much on a Panamera, M5 or AMG car.
@jonen9494 There's nothing wrong with the German cars like the RS6 and M5, in fact they are fantastic. But they are significantly more expensive than the CTS-V, without any real advantage except for some of the secondary materials used.
@TheMightySamsonite The now-defunct WRX wagon was nice, and it was my favorite body style in that generation, but it's not the 190 mph missile that the CTS-V is. And I never said that the CTS-V was the only exciting wagon, there are plenty of them, especially in Europe. But I did say it was the only exciting American-made wagon in recent memory.
@jmooch59 You'll see me on TV in July on "The Car Show" on Speed with Adam Carolla, Dan Neil, and John Salley. And if you'd like a T-Shirt they are available on our web site.
@sportfuryman The car is out of production, so there aren't any press cars around to test. Sourcing all those cars from private owners would be much more annoying than it's worth.
@sford01 Yeah, until we make enough money to get our own testing gear and a race track in our back yard, we need to just get most of our numbers elsewhere. I'd imagine that if the same driver tested them on the same day, the Porsche could out-grip the Caddy, but I could tell just by driving the Caddy hard that it's capable of way more than .88G. For now it will have to remain a mystery.
I was sad when the video ended lol. This looks like a dream come true such a beautiful place and BADASS cars...all out nothing around plus I'm sure you've got a detailer lined up for all the dirt hahahahaha. Man wish there was more of this video Hahahaha
everyone loves top gear, known fact. but to matt and all the guys working on these vids, I'd honestly rather be watching this content than the stuff on tv.
@wipandco Well, while it's obvious that the Wagon won't be a track star the same way those purebred sports cars are, an automatic CTS-V Sedan was piloted around the Nurburgring by John Heinricy in 7 minutes, 59 seconds, which is quicker than the BMW M3, Audi R8 V8, Aston Martin DBS and Vantage, and identical to the Porsche 997 Carrera S. So considering its weight, it goes around corners quite well.
@GunGuru727 I have several pairs. The Piloti Prototipos are kind of the all-the-time standard. I also have some Shelby Branded shoes that Tom and I got to match our car for Bullrun last year. Plus, they are velcro which is awesome. For actual racing I have some DC Pro Spec v1.0 that are second to none.
@TheSmokingTire ill take ur word for it...love the work u guys do...a lot of thought into it, love it i want ur job ;)...cars and cameras what a dream job

@TheSmokingTire that's great...you guys really deserve the exposure...i'll be sure to check the show...good luck ;)
@lilaznmage15 very close comparison. I'd say the Mustang is a bit more fun to drive, yet the Cadillac is more composed and offers more practicality for the dollar
