I can’t believe how UConn was a 10 underdog in this game when they were a number 1 seed, finished the season number 2 in the coaches poll with a 34-2 record. No respect just because it was Duke. We proved all the critics wrong that night.
Believe it. In the PRESEASON, the tournament was called the Duke Invitational as nobody gave anybody a chance against Duke. It was the championship that should have occurred since the only #1 teams in any poll, during the whole of the year was either Duke or UConn. Duke met its expectations while UConn exceeded its expectations by winning this game.
As a Uconn alumni who was there for Tate George's shot vs. Clemson, that shot is still the best moment, because we hadn't been anywhere before that happened. That was the shot that made Uconn believe they could do great things.
@@RavenThom The accuracy of the nearly full court inbound pass (with a 6'11' defender blocking your view) coupled with the clean catch of the ball AND managing to release the shot BEFORE the buzzer AND then making the shot. I would guess that the odds of ALL of these things happening was no more than 1%. This should have been rated #1.
good list, but misses the 1987-88 season when the underdog UConn team beat #9 and #14 Georgetown teams and eventually won the NIT with Cliff Robinson, Phil Gamble and roster of great role players:Jeff King, Lyman DePriest, Steve Pikiel and others. That season marked UConn's rise, and for those on campus that year it was pretty amazing to experience.
I appreciate the list as a fellow UConn fan. I can't hold my tongue seeing Ray Allen's game-winner in '96 as the 10th best moment in UConn history. Grant it, it is your opinion against mine, plus it wasn't in the NCAA tournament and it is a non-title year. That '96 Big East final was the greatest Big East game ever. I know people want to claim UConn-Syracuse in '09 as the best, but that was heavenly, mouth-watering match-up between what would become two of the greatest players of their generation in Ray Allen vs Allen Iverson. It was almost poetic seeing the game conclude with Ray Allen rising over Iverson to hit that game-winner. It is the greatest memory in the history of the greatest basketball conference ever. R.I.P. Big East.
Crazy how this comment aged! Awesome to go down the list of incredible UConn teams and players. Wasn’t there a game with a Kevin Ollie coast to coast game winner that I remember? Kind of remember?
I get a huge grin on my face every time I replay the ending against Washington! While not as much meaning on the list, A young Sean McDonough couldn't hide his excitement with the call on Hamilton's second put-back. "Hamilton at the buzzer......YESSS!.......YESS!.....CONNECTICUT WINS!" Epic moment in NCAA Basketball broadcasting and for Sean!
You have the Clemson 1990 Sweet 16 buzzer beater at No. 6? That is by FAR the most legendary shot in UConn history. Fans even call it, "the shot." Every UConn fan can tell you EXACTLY where they were when it went in, even 24 years later. It's still on the top 10 buzzer beater list every NCAA tournament. Very good list I will say but, "the shot," goes at no. 2 or 3, tops. Agreed that 1999 NCAA championship over Duke is No. 1.
My favorite is still the win over Duke in the finals. We were huge underdogs but to tell the truth as good as Duke was, we were pretty good all year too. I think we only lost a couple games that year and our star was out. We played some really good defense that year.
if ur talking about '99 championship game, Dook was good but UConn was just as good, Uconn was #1 on the poll longer than any other team including Dook that year.
The was my favorite team because they were so unified in how they play both offense and defense. There were very very tough to score on and just as tough to guard the wings.
U can’t hate UConn. We play old school Big East basketball with an underdog mentality even when we are a 1 seed. That’s the house that Calhoun built. It’s the traditions that continues with Coach Hurley.
I agree.... that Clemson 1990 sweet 16 buzzer beater at no. 6? crazy, obviously you weren't there, I was.....1 second left to go across the whole court, that sh** just doesn't happen, even in the NBA! Well maybe that Derrick Fisher shot with the Lakers vs the San Antonio Spurs with less than a second, but LA had the ball on their side of the court, they didn't have to go the whole distance!! I understand the game wasn't for the national title, but still the players feel the same pressure. I know, I played in the NCAA tournament, but your video does say the top 10 moments, and I have to agree, winning our first National Title is no. 1. GO UCONN!!!
In no way should UCONN have been 10 point underdogs vs Duke. UCONN was no 1 for first half of season, but lost two with guys injured. Duke had one loss. Duke had played 10 top 25 teams before the game and UCONN had played 13. They had a common high rated opponent in Mich State which UCONN won by a lot more. They beat St John's 2x, one by a lot more than Duke did. Plus, they had Rip Hamilton. people were asking, "Who's going to stop Elton Brand? Rip heard that and said, "Who's going to stop ME?" They didn't. MVP, 27 points and 7 Rebs. Duke and coach K simply had this aura about them and the "experts" really didn't look at how good UCONN was. It was not even an upset. If you don't agree, look at THE FACTS!
Agree with everything u said. I remember all season long thinking “we’re just as good as them, I think we can beat them, hope we get a shot at them” Duke hadn’t seen a complete team like that all year, and I will never, ever forget that moment
yeah. pretty horrible. To be fair though it was expected Uconn would win when the tourney began. That team was preseason #1 but had injury issues during the season. Once they got rolling in march it was pretty clear they were the best team in the country. If it wasn't for some shitty calls by the refs Duke wouldve gotten blown out but the refs made sure that wasn't the case.
#6 is no #1 and it aint even close bro; uconn led the entire game and clemson never led until the 3 that gave them that lead; i didnt even watch the first 5 because u got it so wrong
