The mom jokes! 😂 At first I was like “Wait. Did I hear that right?”. I sure did! This was entertaining. So happy I found your channel. I love a good Terry Brooks novel. Isn’t it interesting how we get something different out of a book every time we re-read it. I love that we can re-experience them at different times in our lives.
What a list! I have always loved how much you re-read. It’s commendable. I struggle at times with wanting to re-read books I love and reading new to me books. Sounds like you had a fantastic reading year in 2023, hope it continues in 2024!
Hey Brian, do you know that your books are translated into german (of course you know that) and pretty well known in the fantasy Community here? I started the first book a few days ago and im absolutely loving it so far. Also the translation and the german Cover are great.
Love your list. I think I have every Lord of the Rings audible//audio book version out there and I love Andy Serkis's new versions so much. Keep on doing what you are doing, brother. Have a great New Year's!
This was hilarious and a wonderful watch, which I needed as I had coronavirus this whole Christmas weekend. So my heart was broken about all my plans going down the drain, I needed this. So thank you! I’m actually on the mend and should be able to just celebrate my Christmas this coming weekend instead. Love your work Brian! Happy holidays to you and a very wonderful New Year to you and your family. I can’t wait to see your 2024 chaos lol
I'm only reading this now. I hope you're doing much better. I'm sorry that virus has horrible timing. I went from Arizona to Minnesota to see all of my grandkids for 3 weeks, one set had hand, foot, and mouth disease, then a week later the other set had strep, and one covid. I spent almost all 3 weeks in a hotel. You were not alone 🌌 Lynn
I wanted to let you know I read The Forgetting Moon this year and really enjoyed it. I bought the next 2 books in your series and look forward to reading them soon.
Woooo love Sharpe’s Tiger!!! Also read it this year and just can’t get enough of despicable Hakeswill, and I just loved the plot of Sharpe heading off to Seringapatam pretending to be a deserter. Loved the video!
Brian your audiobook of Lonesone Crown is finally available today!!! I can not think of better gift than returning to the Five Isles with Timothy Gerard Reynolds!! I had to wait for the audio!!
The Silence Of The White City trilogy by Eva Garcia Saenz is SO good. It’s a thriller trilogy and think you would really like it. It’s atmospheric set in Spain. So a lot of the murders are in historical places and cathedrals. Deserves way more recognition.
I love this list and your delivery! New to the channel and booktube. It is great to see a list Terry Brooks on it! After Tolkien, he was my first high fantasy author (way back in the day)! And I love that you have such a variety of books in your list. I did not make it far in the first Outlander book...but now I might give it another go! Also looking forward to reading your novels this year! I heard about you (and them) from the upcoming buddy read hosted @Talking_Story. "heavy metal fantasy"? Sign me up! (Also...I got super tickled by the "definitely editing that out" sections in this video...so happy that you left them in!)
I can remember my late mother reading Shogun when I was a kid and telling me to read it one day. I’m 52. I think that time is now. Also I would love to hear your top audible books. I have a bunch of credits. Maybe I’ll listen to Shogun!
Shadow Rising: Perrin and the battle of Emond's field... Best story in Wheel of Time. Also, this is where I really warmed up to Egwene who became my favorite character in Wheel of time.
Great list and great recommendations, as I don't know some of the books on the list yet! Btw I can totally understand your math problem, Brian. I was always mediocre at best, but above all my math skills drop a significant amount in front of an audience. So don't think about it.👍
Evening and the morning was still a great read, even if it didn’t make the list. But nice cameo 😄 Just got Armour of Light for Christmas, though. I plan to start it later this week
I bought a new set of the LOTR trilogy just because of the cover you held for Fellowship. Shogun is on my list. My parents have been to japan more than 10 times and if I went I would definitely be the newcomer on an alien planet!!! Great video as usual. Wish I could read as fast as you! So jealous.
Know exactly what you mean about physically reading the silmarilion, gonna have to check out the Andy Serkis narration. And please don't edit your videos,,it would spoil my drinking game of having a shot of dark rum every time an edit is promised yet not fulfilled 😂. Happy new year to you Sir. Don't ever change 🤘 P.S. please check out some China Mieville,,I really want to know what you think about his style. I personally love his work. You have read everything else so what have you got to lose? 😂
My top more than ten (not in order unless otherwise noted) : "Don Quixote" by Miguel Cervantes (overall best of the year) "Dracula" by Bram Stoker (best classic horror) "The Damnation Game" by Clive Barker ( best modern horror) "Stand on Zanzibar" by John Brunner (most prophetic sci-fi) "Neuromancer" by William Gibson (most influential sci-fi) "The Rediscovery of Man" by Cordwainer Smith (most imaginative sci-fi) "The World Inside" by Robert Silverberg (best world building) "Tower of Glass" by Robert Silverberg (best android character psychology) "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" by Philip K Dick (best example of book better than movie, except maybe tied with "Dracula" in this category, except "Dracula" has been made into dozens of different movies instead of only one) "The Secret Agent" by Joseph Conrad (best descriptive writing) "People's Republic" by Kurt Schlichter (best action scenes) "Harvest of Stars" by Poul Anderson (best mix of sci-fi sub-genres: dystopian, space adventure, cyberpunk, future tech speculation, plus spy thriller) "Catastrophes" anthology edited by Isaac Asimov (best sci-fi short story anthology) Honorable mention to "Moby Dick" by Herman Melville, best book I haven't finished yet this year, halfway through as of 12/30/23, may have been #1 if I had finished by the end of the year.
My Top 10 reads of 2023 My top favorite read, is a tie between «Under Heaven» by Guy Gavriel Kay & «The Veiled Throne» by Ken Liu: «Under Heaven» should be teached next to «War & Peace» and «Le Miserables» for GGK’s prose and Ken Liu’s Character Work has few if any rivals! A character that has only one scene in «TVT» (though a series veteran in «The Dandelion Dynasty»), earned with that scene alone my favorite character: Cogo Yelu! Next is another tie between «The Retreat to Avalon» by Sean Poage & «The Winter King» by Bernard Cornwell: Poage has written my favorite take on «A Historical King Arthur» and the Seige of Yves Trebon/St. Michel in «TWK» shows why Cornwell might be the best at writing battles! The next are unsorted: «The Way of Edan» by Philip Chase «Bold Ascension» by Vaughn Roycroft «The Winter Road» by Adrian Selby «Salammbo» by Gustave Flaubert «The Farthest Shore» by Ursula K. Le Guin «Brigantia» by Adrian Goldsworthy Honourable Mentions «The Little Emperors»/«The Conscience of the King» by Alfred Duggan (Love very dry British humor on ambitions, politics and bureaucracy (so many great quotes!), and excellent descriptions of how (possibly) Roman Britain fell!) «Tortilla Flat» by John Steinbeck (my biggest laughs this year, Great Feelgood Read if you don’t mind some tragedy too!)
Very nice list! I don't know if you've already said something on the matter, but any word on the audiobook of The Lonesome Crown? Asking for a friend . . . I mean myself.
BLD is the king of “I’m gonna need to edit this” and proceeds to upload with zero edits- and I love it and hope he never edits. Also- I’m halfway through blackest heart and his series is absolutely brilliant
Any idea if and when Lonesome crown will be released on audible? I’m dying to listen to it. I noticed it was released on Apple Books today but I prefer to keep my collection all in one place if I can.
I received all 3 books in your Five Warrior Angels series for Christmas and am devouring them. Will there be any more books in this series? In general, when can we expect another book from you good sir?
Great… Now I have to use a credit on the Andy Serkis Fellowship of the Ring. I already have an audio version. Not cool Brian. Not cool. Also… I read the shadow rising for the first time last year and I said the same thing! Literally one of the greatest books of all time!
Durfees team lead: why are you two hours late for work again?! BLD: sorry i was listening to Gollum narrating The Silmarillion Durfee team lead: you WHAT
Somebody tell me if forgetting moon is any good? Wanna hear from those that have read it.. last reads were Witcher , ASOIAF , and I’m finishing up Mistborn now … looking for books to add to my back log!
I‘ve read „The forgetting Moon“ and „The blackest Heart“ recently and it‘s definitely in my top10 of 2023! I loved it a lot and just ordered „The lonesome crown“. Some of my other favourite Series are „age of madness“ by Joe Abercrombie, „Stormlight Archive“ by Sanderson, The Witcher-Series and „lies of Locke Lamorra“ by Scott Lynch. Basically High Fantasy and Grimdark.
Oh and The Vibes of forgetting Moon are quite similar to John Gwynnes „faithfull and The Fallen“. If you already know and Like that Series it could be a good Indicator you‘ll enjoy Durfees Books as well.
Here's my top ten Spare by prince harry Delilah green doesn't care Reminders of him by colleen hoover Tell me everything by minka Kelly memoir What my bones know by Stephenie foo memoir The mind series by s.t abby Someday maybe The woman in me by britney spears memoir Any man by amber tamblyn The fiancee farce
It must have been that great Raider victory over the hated Chiefs that caused your being a little off today. Silver and Black has found a new head coach!
I was so pumped to read Small Mercies aferwatching your video, and then it happend. The narrator. I couldn't make it through the sample on Audible. That voice grated on me I almost jumped out of my chair. Yuck. I'd rather buy the Kindle version and listen to the computer read it than to listen to her. I'm legally blind and can't read physical books anymore. What a disapointment.
You will have to remove The Silmarillion and the Fellowship of the Ring (because you listened to them, and did not read them); or change the title to: Top Ten Books I Read and/or Listened To.
