I absolutely loved the passion you have in this video. Most Top 10’s are made by people who don’t really care about the subject matter. They are just trying to get a video out. The fact that you own them and have so many personal experiences, makes this video that much better. Thank you for reopening my eyes to the fantastic library of Turbo/PC Engine games. “a sip of coffee to you”
AndrewBGood. Was rewatching this great vid and Real List! Was gonna comment, But you hit the nail on the head. Thus I shall head to the kitchen instead and sort myself out a coffee. Sip to you brother ☕️👌🏻👊🏻
OMG a PC Engine video! We miss your PC Engine videos so much! Your old videos have opened our eyes to shooters and the only reason we bought Gate of Thunder and Winds of Thunder last Christmas! We fell in love with Gate of Thunder, Hudson Soft is amazing. Thanks for the PC Engine video BitHead1000!
Lo-Res Bros. I love the episode however........... it should come with a health warning for your wallet 💰💸💵💴💶💰💸💵💴💶 It’s because of Bithead I own a PC Engine and will have to work my way though these games.
Sip of coffee ☕️ for Hudson Soft 🕹💪🏼 Another awesome show Jesse. I’ve only recently discovered the PC Engine and have to say Soldier Blade is the best shooter I’ve ever played! The soundtrack is out of this world too. Crank it up while playing and I just loose myself in the game. What an experience that game is. Look forward to seeing the next one as always. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing your list with us. I am missing several of these in my collection. I will get ‘em all eventually. The high prices make it slow going for me, but the PC Engine is worth it.
The parallax scrolling in air zonk is truly amazing! Rivals anything the Genesis, SNES and even the mighty neogeo can pull off! PC engine rules! 8 bit machine my ass!!!! Ok maybe it is but the most powerful 8 bit machine ever devised!!!!!
I came here for your PC Engine Mini meltdown video (definitely agree with what you said), but I'm staying for your deep love and passion for the console. Great stuff 👍
You really captured A LOT of my experiences in this video growing up encountering Lifeforce/Salamander (NES in my case), Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, Sapphire, etc... Shooters also became one of my favorite genres next to RPGs, you could never go wrong with a PCE shootie! Great list, I agree with most, stay cool my PCE turbro! ;)
My grandparents always had a caddy. I drove one of theirs when I was 17 to do some errands. The thing was a behemoth and I remember being amazed how little gas input the thing needed to keep going. It was like cruise control but just the weight of it kept it moving. Once it was up to speed you didn't need to use the gas for a few minutes. Guessing it was a early 90's year... maybe late 80's.
I remember I use to visit the local game shop (small independant store) and watch the attract mode for R-type and Mr Heli on their demo PC Engine here in the UK. It was the white model version, so I'm guessing it was an import. The store owners did let me play it on a few occasions. I wish I had the funds back then as a kid. But video games back then were expensive. It took me weeks of paper round ££ to buy Sonic on the Sega Master System on release (December 1991)!
"Is that even legal?" 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👊👌 Bravo , fucking bravo . This is my favourite episode ever. Your passion is amazing and the choices almost mirrored exactly how I would of done it myself.
I didn't think you were still getting hard over pc engine stuff. Thought the Nes had taken over. Glad to see that's not the case. Looking forward to sitting down and watching this
Saw your review of air zonk and spot on! Then I saw Image Fight and thought it must be worth playing. Did not have it on my modded Xbox for PC Engine, but did have the arcade version. Got playing it and at first, I thought this is too hard. But shortly after I got past the first continue, wow, it suddenly dawned on me you were right, it is a very playable game, and a nice challenge.
Air zonk graphics are amazing! I read a article that it used line scrolling so well that it looked like high end parallax scrolling! But in that same article the writer said that the turbographx 16/PC engine could do line scrolling like nobody's business! Sega began to use this line scrolling technique along with parallax scrolling together in some genesis games! Sega developed a engine to use both at the same time!
Your passion for shooters makes me wanna get into them. Wings of Wor on sega mega drive looks amazing from the screenshots. Pretty much the only shooter I played as a kid was Over Horizon on my famicom clone
Great list! I too grew up with the PC Engine and I remember GunHed was a huge shoot em up in Japan in 1989. In the UK most importers sold out of the game.
Sippa coffee for Image Fight crackin the top 5 baby! I’ll say I own 8 out of 10 of these games and most of these would go on my top ten. I’d have to sneak one of the Download games in there somewhere. You should do a follow up honorable mentions video 🤘🤘
Gate of Thunder is my favorite shmup of all time. The music and art is perfect, the weapon balance is perfect, shooting forward and/or backwards was a great mechanic and the stage variety was perfect.
I just wish Life Force on the nes had four options. It only had two, salamander for famicom had three, because Nintendo of America didnt allow for Konami to use their custom mappers that allowed for more options, where as in Japan they could. Gradius 2 for the famicom has four. I love Salamander and the Gradius series.
Also listened to it back then... PC-E is my favourite console. Rewatching because why not and also this is the greatest video game programme in the history of human civilisation!
Listened to this probably over a yr ago, it was a delight then & re-listening to it is a delight now. Having spent time with Sapphire this time around, I can wholeheartedly agree with every comment you have about that one. What they pulled off with the PCE with that one, boggles the mind. Seeing Gate of Thunder here makes me wonder why another shooter with a hard rock/metal OST hasn't been made since the PCE days. 🥺 If I'm missing something here, please share. It's time for a modern shooter with the makeup of GOT & LOT.
Growing up outside of Philly PA in the early 90s we called them bosses. Maybe it was in a Nintendo power or something? Don't know where we heard it from but I always definitely remember calling them bosses
Bithead, I'm so depressed. I had to sell over 120 pc engine /TurboGrafx games due to bills. I will never be the same. You are the MASTER of PCE. I will never be able to afford them again, so sad.
I've been playing these games since the arcades, Always been fascinated with R-Type and Gradius and thanks to them Shooters have always been my favourites! Gradius wins as my fave franchise of all time time....R-Type 1 is awesome , but there's like 6 or more awesome Gradius games! All with perfect music and gameplay :)
It's the RAM expansion that truly did it for the PC Engine. The RAM upgrades that we got with the CD add-on completely unlocked the raw potential of the graphics chip inside the PC Engine, and nobody would have believed that the PC Engine's graphics chip was actually more powerful than what the Genesis or SNES could offer, but all you have to do is play a few of the Super CD and Arcade CD games and you'll have your proof. The graphics chip inside the PC Engine was just above and beyond for it's time. The base unit was basically starving for RAM and even the meager RAM upgrade of the System 3.0 card was enough to give us games like Rondo of Blood, which look better than ANYTHING the Genesis or SNES could provide. That CD add-on truly made the PC Engine shine, and it's a crying shame they didn't advertise the thing better as it really should have been a lot more popular in the States than it was.
Excellent top10 list! The PCE is my fav system of all time. It blew me away seeing it in magazines in the UK in the late 80’s, it was the console that started off Japanese import shops in the UK, iconic system. Having a PC Engine back in the early 90s as a teenager was a magical time. Btw I completed Image Fight with 1-Life on Leader Class (one up from the default) it took me a good few weeks but it was amazing to finally pull it off. Here’s a replay I did, with joystick cam. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QdPreeaM6v4.html
This is just what I need... now I know what to focus on for my SSDS3. You mentioned you didn't get to play this when you were younger... how old/when did you get to play this for the first time?
Unfortunately don't have a copy of Sapphire as yet, but hope to at some stage - have heard so much about it. Salamander is indeed awesome, way less slow down than other versions as well. Damn Override is another I don't have, haven't played that at all either, sounds cool. Gradius II is extremely good, one of my favourites as well. Air Zonk is one of the best 'Cute em ups' on any system, it's amazing what it throws at you in the game. Image Fight plays very well, although extremely hard. Don't have Winds of Thunder as yet, as I have mainly focussed on the Hucard titles so far. Looks awesome though. And sadly Gates of Thunder is another I am yet to experience - but that also means I have it to look forward to. Soldier Blade is the pinnacle of the Soldier series of shooters. R-Type is frikkin awesome, one of the very first titles I bought for the system - would still like the CD version, so you can continue in the one game. The PC Engine is one of my favourite systems I have collected games for, and I hope to one day to progress to the next step and write a new shoot em up for it.
I'm using master instead of boss from now on. We used to call levels 'boards' back in the day, not really sure why though. I guess it was some leftover lingo from board games.
Xenon 2 Megablast would be up there for me. I'm sure some of it's nostalgia but remember it being a great game with great music. Thumping tunes. The days of the Amiga, etc. Good call on R-Type.
By the way, those are not actually Polygons being used in Sapphire, there is in fact not a single Polygon used in the entire game. It's actually using some VERY impressive looking digitized sprites. It just happens to be done so well that it literally looks like Polygonal graphics.
It's not really 8 bit! It's a hybrid mix between 8 bit and 16 bit! More 16 bit than 8 bit! Because the two 16 bit graphics processors do the grunt of the work!!!!!
When it comes to Dodonpachi i always picture the assignment, some samurai programmer: "shogun, you want an arcade conversion but there are technical limitations" "make it the best possible" "i bind my honor to it, shogun"
The entire R-Type series is amazing imo. I love 1, 2, 3 and delta, and playing through Final now on my Japanese PS2 Slim. Wish they would make a modern day game, but I believe I-Rem are no more.
It was, is, and always will be...MASTER (not boss!)...And for proof you need to do nothing more than listen to it roll off the tongue...LAST MASTER...it just flows. I spent my childhood trying to reach the MASTER...adulthood is about avoiding the boss.
