I find the lack of Gitaroo Man disturbing. If you happen to use google and find that people use Gitaroos, which technically aren't real, let me explain. Gitaroos are fictional items that can be used to play music and battle other people. It is used in-game as both a battle weapon and a musical instrument, taking form of electric guitars, acoustic guitars, battle axes, trumpets, maracas, and in one case a UFO. It has been used to play notes that, when in battle, can launch beams of energy to deplete the opponent's health. This is prevalent in most stages, however in stage 6, it is used specifically as an acoustic guitar to serenade a woman the protagonist meets. I assume this would technically qualify it as a musical instrument, qualifying Gitaroo Man as part of this list.
Recently, I discovered one musician fighter that became one of my favorites of all time. I think not many people know her, but if you combine her story throughout the 3 games she's in and her battle style, you'll see that she at least deserves to be in the top 3 of this lists: from the Megaman Starforce series, I present Sonia Strumm/Hibiki Misora, and her EM Wave form Harp Note.
I suppose you could've mentioned Eternal Sonata. The whole RPG is centered around music and the main protagonist (and final boss) is 19th century Polish composer Frederic Chopin. The game's storyline takes place in a dream Chopin was having on his deathbed at the age of 39. While Chopin was famous for his piano compositions, several of which are prominently featured in the game, in combat he wields conductor's batons using them as both a melee weapon and as a means of summoning spells. All other characters and locations are named after musical instruments or musical terms.
Umm, not really much of a spoiler and the game's pretty old. Yeah, Chopin died young-ish and the game basically tells you he's on his deathbed at the start. His role as the final boss is more just to tie in his death with events in the game.
It took me forever to beat Demyx 5 years since i last played the game and i can still hear "Like it?" and "Dance Water Dance!" so clearly. Not to mention those damn clones..........
to be honest... you surprised me the fuck out with lyude. he was my fav character when i played Baten Kaitos, but i never thought anyone would ever mention him or even the game in a countdown. good job!
Not to mention in the GBA remake of FF IV, Edward once you got his ultimate weapon, became one of the most powerful fighters hitting nearly every single enemy for 9999 including Neo-Zeromus.
I know that I'm late for this, but a few characters that I wanted to mention for this list are Sakura Ogami (martial artist) and Peko Pekoyama (swordsman) from Danganronpa. (Trigger Happy Havoc and Goodbye Despair respectively.
Lyude was my main character along with Kalas and Xelha. All Baten Kaitos characters had the badass factor, but I think Lyude was the best attacker because his Extreme Attacks were ALL BRUTAL! Sforzzando, Diminuendo, Intermezzo and Crescendo were my favorites! Love your list dude, so glad other people have played this game
I was so shocked and happy to see Lyude was on the list and especially number one! The Baten Kaitos series really helped me get into rpg's and it really is an underated game.
I applaud you for your choice at number 1. I personally loved Baten Kaitos and I am happy that other people realized that it is a good game with likable characters.
I was so scared you would not notice Lyuid. I am very happy with that. Even though you didn't recognize the main character as a sword user. I did play this game, and I loved it!
For the record, my uncle did have his own game-design company (to put it simply). That's why I initially got interested in the business. I started learning the different aspects of games and how they're built when I was a kid. Making a game has always interested me more than playing them. I'm working on creating an entire, truly open-world game, that WILL actually allow you to affect the world itself based on your actions. A world that will be re-shaped with everything you do.
well that was...special.i did discover a cool character or two in this one.Sona was my favorite out of all these, looks and abilities both.nice bongo feature
Awsome list! I was honestly expecting DK on the list, but that's okay. Love the fact that Eddie Riggs got on the list. On a final note, It's cool you also got Demyx on here (but I still hate him).
great list! i have to say u made pretty good selection :) a bit bummed that kurow from okamiden didnt make it but hey, its just a little bother. doesnt stop it from being a great list. you should be proud of your weapon user lists :) cant wait to see more
If Demyx's actual person appears in Kingdom Hearts 3, with a good backstory prior to the organization and a possible boss fight that isn't frustrating as fuck, i would like him
Hell yeah! Baten Kaitos! If I were to make a ranking of top plot twists in video games then Baten Kaitos would definitely be somewhere in the top five.
The Minstrel from Romancing SaGa: Minstrel's Song. He was so freaking awesome man, not only does he play the double neck acoustic guitar (that conceals a sword *not sure if thats true but he does happen to attack with a sword in battle) but is the god Elore in disguise. If recruited in your team he will end a battle in seconds but will not fight in serious plot related battles and also plays as a guide to the heroes throught out the game my personal favorite musician fighter!
For some retro fun a good throwback could be the first boss from Parasol Stars. Considering it's a TurboGraphx title, it probably isn't as well known. Each world has its theme and the first world is music. After battling through castanets, trumpets, accordions, pianos, and even triangles, you're confronted by a monstrous drum set monstrosity. In it's own respect the main character deserves some credit for beating enemies senseless with an umbrella
Well actually Demyx's reaction command depends on when you hit it but even I can't remember it been so long. Good choice on number 1 although most of the clips you showed were from Origins the only thing wrong with Eternal Wings was the voice acting but it still has one of the best plot twists I have ever seen and pretty much every character has to balance elemental attacks but you did a great character analysis. Good job.
There's always a comment who will say "how come X character isn't on the list?" But that's not what I want to focus on. Rather, I want to put in a good word for what I believe could very well replace Bongo Bongo more comfortably. Namely, not many people talk about Link's musical prowess. While he doesn't fight using music, music is part of his repertoire. Each song is used for traveling, puzzles and summoning. He's well versed!
The art or science of combining vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. The vocal or instrumental sound produced in this way. That's how google defines music
YES. I was thinking the EXACT same thing. I used him all the time and his buffs were AMAZING. :D Also, it's nice to see someone else who actually knows about the Shadow Hearts games. :D (I barely know anyone who actually knows about the series XD)
Alright, the oars guy was another favorite, but Lyude reminded me somewhat of myself, and probably would have been even more like me if I was an ambassador like he was. Granted, I have changed a little since then, and he doesn't remind me of myself quite as much, but Lyude is flashy, he has a trumpet that is actually a gun, and his special attacks are surprisingly devastating AND FREAKISHLY AWESOME TO WATCH.
If i could pick a substitute for FF Musicians i'd pick Hurdy from Tactics advance 2 for the DS. I like Hurdy not only for being a Moogle, but the moves he can learn are in fact helpful given with the right amount of strategy put into it. My 2 most favorite moves is when Hurdy can do major damage to Undead monsters and the other being a random buff status to the party within range. I like the randomness given you'll find yourself a chance of getting the Auto-revive status which is a nice touch to have.
If you like RPGs, I guarantee you'll absolutely love this game! I have to admit that it gets tough from time to time and that the voice acting isn't the best, but the scenery is beautiful and the story is really amazing! Not to mention that the battle system, albeit using cards, was surprisingly fun and very satisfying when you get the right combos. Definitely a must for RPG enthusiasts :)
One example for this category that I came across recently is Suzume from Mini Ninjas. I doubt you've ever played this game, seeing how poorly it did in sales, but Suzume is a crazy powerful ninja who's weapon of choice is a wooden flute, which she can also play.
Yaaaay, you got Will and I-no XD Some others I can think of: Zhen Ji - Dynasty Warriors (Flute) Cai Wenji - Dynasty Warriors 7 (Harp) Makoto - Enchanted Arms (Saxophone) Frédéric François Chopin - Eternal Sonata (Conductors baton) (Not actually an instrument, but noteworthy nonetheless) Rhapsody - HoN (Lute)
two things 1. I am one of the few people who actually played the game at #1. 2. It is awesome that I finally see a top 10 countdown artist who knew about Baten Kaitos.
a thought I had... In kingdom hearts, the nobodies are made from the body leftover from when a strong willed person becomes a heartless, and the heartless are formed from the darkness in people heart... so the nobodies are the bodies... and the heartless are basically the hearts...
Although not on the list, I think an honourable mention goes to the Noise Marines in the Dawn of War series. Their weapons are essentially twisted musical instruments that deal frightening damage. The only people that could consider the cacophany they create "music" are the Noise Marines themselves. :-p
Ooh, ooh, I've played Baten Kaitos! I rented it once a looooooooong time ago. Never finished it though, cuz it was a 2-disk game and I only had a week to play it... I'd like to finish it, though. I had a blast with it. Also, I'm happy you put Demyx so high. He is annoying as a boss, but he never fails to make me laugh. "And while you're collecting hearts, maybe I can collect some Z's..."
Sheik from hyrule warriors works As Well as her harp not only deals midrange damage but can also power up the rest of her attacks with a different element depending on the song making her a smart idea to bring into most battles
Though Eternal Sonata does have a heavy music theme, Chopin didn't use an actually instrument as a weapon. I personally would included Poco from Arc the Lad. The guy's a one man marching band. Cymbols for physical attacks, a drum for increasing his party's attack power, an ocarina for speed, a flute that makes others face in his direction for some reason, a bigger drum that fires a laser, a harp that can heal, a bass that slows foes, a bomb shooting trombone, and spook shooting trumpet.
