Today we talk about decluttering craft projects and art supplies! So often we start projects and acquire extra supplies...but never finish them!! Oh, you thought you were the only one??? ;) Let's walk through the questions we ask to decide what to keep, and also HOW MUCH to keep!
IN THIS VIDEO:
1:05 Do we like the cube shelves for art & craft storage
1:31 With remodeling, how we're reconfiguring their desk
2:16 *THE QUESTIONS we ask!*
4:23 Learning what ACTUALLY keeps kids occupied & playing on their own
6:29 Where the girls store their special keepsake items
7:42 NEVER (ever, ever) ask this question when decluttering!
8:27 *How do we get our kids to not be wasteful?*
10:03 What if kids (or ME!) have a hard time parting with things?
10:21 What their new desks look like
KEY TAKE AWAY: It's OK to get rid of projects we've started but don't desire to finish...that happens to all of us!! Keeping the half finished project does not put money back in our pocket or help it to get done...most often it just causes guilt!!!

One thing I started doing on vacations when when my 4 kids were small was buy a Christmas Ornament instead of cheap souvenirs. Sometime we end up with multiple ornaments from each trip if we have different adventures along the way. As a family we pick out the ornament from the places we visit and I write the year on the back. Then each year as we decorate the Christmas tree we reminisce over the fun times we had on each trip, the sights we saw or places we visited, silly stories or mishaps from the trips. It's such an enjoyably time as a family and vacation money well spent in our opinion.

Another way to deal with "free" or "gifted" items is to accept them with grace and kindness and then immediately take them to the "give away" bin or put it in the "give away" box you have at home. This is a technique I've been using for those especially persistent people who want to give you things. They mean well😁

I have ADHD so keeping my craft supplies organized is really difficult. I have been struggling with clutter for a while because i always had the "oh i COULD use this for something else" or "what if i need it some day" mindset. I tried ever decluttering method i could find and nothing worked, your video is the first thing that actually worked and got me motivated to clear out my craft supply closet! Thanks a lot!

You, my dear, are SUCH a SMART MAMMA!! You truly are!! I sure hope new moms hear what you say. My children are 38 & 35 now. People saying, “The time goes fast” can hardly be imagined, when you’re up all night nursing baby, or up with your sick child. I KNOW! Been there. Really! But, lemme tell you CHILDREN grow into ADULTS in the blink of an eye! I treasured every day with my kids! I hope you do, too! If you’re in the middle of trying times with your kiddos, Please Remember, This Too Shall Pass 💕. Hope everyone is well, safe, and careful!!

As a "creative being" myself, there is nothing like a clean space to get the juices flowing again. It's just that all my beautiful CARD STOCK is so hard to get rid of (even though I don't use it)!!! I started decluttering , with a vengeance, when I watched your house staging video in order to get our house ready to sell. I love how it feels and am looking forward to downsizing and a clutter free home. I'm feeling the need for second layer of the onion to start coming off! I love your videos and eagerly watch the commentary of your lives unfold. Thank you for the smiles you bring into our world.

Oh Dawn....I sooo had this scenario about 10 yrs ago with our kids!! I had kept so many markers, coloring books, yarn, stickers, beads, glitter, glue, even those scissors that would cut out decorative edges that did not even cut well. My daughter also had a similar thing that she called a "cube organizer" shelf with those canvas bins from IKEA. She finally grew tired of "organizing" it and now, it is used in the garage for shoe storage ;) We had set it out there for donation and realized, hey, this would clear up our "shoes by the front door" problem ;) And yes, to those craft and hobby kits. Our kids went through a lot of those in the past and we would have bits and pieces of crystal kits, bath soap kits, make your own whatever kits..the idea sounded fun at the time but the result often turned out less than satisfactory ;) My advice having lived through this with our kids now 19 and 22... 1. Don't keep everything because you think the kids NEED it to be entertained (I did that) 2. Don't receive/take everything given to you just because it was "free" or you felt obligated (I did that) 3. Don't buy things just because they are on sale at the craft store (I did that) 4. Go through what you have every month or so to avoid getting too attached to it & to see it it still holds value to you (I never did that!) 5. Don't buy more bins in attempt to organize your things (I did that) 6. Don't feel like your kids won't be well-rounded unless you try out tons of different crafts & hobbies. They will show you and tell you what they love to do if you are listening :D This is off topic, but this is the 2nd top you have worn lately that I LOVE. The sleeves suit me and I also love the stripes! It Also looks pretty on you. Adeline reminds me of my daughter at that age :) :)

I have those Ikea drawers for painting supplies. With those Ikea drawers you can use a labeller to label each drawer - stick the label on the “handle” part - you can see the labels if you are standing at the drawers but no ugly labels on the drawer fronts.
@sheilasheilaford4018
@sheilasheilaford4018 4 года назад
agree with you. The cube storage looks like it ought to be the answer to all our storage needs but, in fact, for all the reasons you give (🤣!) it’s actually not practical at all. Many thousands of people are probably regretting their choice of the same item! The drawers look infinitely more useful, and make the most of space. I so enjoy ‘joining in’ with you and your family. Although I’m an old granny who lives many miles away in the U.K. (south coast of England), I feel like you are friendly next door neighbours. Thanks for continuing to vlog (i hope that’s the right word). I enjoy it very much. How lovely that you are encouraging resourcefulness and self-reliance in your children. I’m having to self-isolate quite strictly, but have so many hobbies and activities indoors that i’m interested in, that it will be a pleasure to have the opportunity/time (I hope!) to catch up with them. I so well remember my mother allowing me to be creative with card, scissors, tape, empty boxes, etc., at home, when I was young. I loved it, and was never bored. It thought me to look within myself for answers, not constantly dependent on others. Your new top looks very pretty, and spring season. We are just coming into spring now, and the increased sunshine will help to give us cheer in the difficult days ahead. 😀. I wish you and your family well and happy. I loved Tom’s measured reaction to you painting the ‘ugly sofa’ grey! But you had to try, didn’t you! I would have had to give it go too! It’s a real ‘cliffhanger’ now! Thanks Dawn and family 💖

The Sterilite Deep Ultra baskets fit perfectly in the cubes, and then I use smaller containers inside. So all of my floss is in it's container, then I have aida fabric, a folder with patterns, clear zipper bags for each project...I keep a WIP bin so I can just toss stuff in. Using clear bags to organize projects helps so much.

If one of my children had a craft kit or project they did not like or vdid not intend to complete, they had to find a creative use for at least 25% of the supplies. They seemed to enjoy that, it really brought out their creative side, taught them how to see things differently, taught them to think before acquiring and each time we had a discussion about wastefulness. It also helped keep the clutter down as well as saved money, we got the idea from another mom in the home schooling group.

I'm a knitter and have a yarn stash. I decided to let the container/boundary be the bad guy. My two bins are full, and my "to knit" bag is full, so I can't buy more yarn until I've knitted through the to-knit bag and make space in the bins. It also helps to remind myself that sales will repeat later, so the FOMO isn't a real threat. That realization has helped me resist impulse buys just because there is a sale.

Yes i definitely think those kits need A LOT of adult supervision. I basically spend my day at work doing "arts and Crafts" and some of these kits i find tricky and need patience to make them come out like they look on the box... not to mention additional supplies not contained in the box! I think those kits are fun to do if you are maybe looking for something new to try, so see if you like it. If its something you like then you could get more of it. But i think probably its best to aim to do the whole kit in one sitting (maybe invite a friend round or a couple of siblings do it together). That way the kit gets used up, and you can have the fun of trying something different. If i buy these kits for friends kids i tend to buy a couple of smaller kits rather than one large kit, so it basically a couple hour activity and each kit is done with. If they come across something they like they can always get refills. Also i'm not sure if the end result is all that important..... i think just having a go practising fine motor skills, and problem solving when it doesn't work. I used to LOVE those kits when i was your daughters age. Finally i think with art supplies it really helps for everything to be accessible, and stored in a way that you can open a draw or cupboard and see everything you have really easily. That way it can spark your imagination for things you might want to create. As a kid i loved mixing up the art supplies in projects, so would want to make something out of clay, then make a fabric thing to dress it in, and play with it in a lego house, and do some sort of paper craft at the same time...... 8 year old me would have seen that as a day well spent!

Another good idea is to take yarn, floss, partially used paints and markers, and other craft supplies to a senior health care center. Call the Activity’s Director and ask what they can use. Their budgets are always low and they rely on gifts from families and others to keep going. They also appreciate puzzles, gently used games and books.

Yes! Loved this! The rule in our house is that if it's on the floor for a day, it's clearly not important to them and I get to pass it along. Also, if you want to keep it, you have to take care of it. If it's not taken care of, you clearly don't want to keep it. Works so well! This could not have come at a better time! We have just had to reconfigure our spaces as hubby is going to be working from home and the adult desk was in the playroom. We have now moved the tv into the playroom and used a couch to separate it into two smaller areas. Adult desk is now in the lounge room, and I LOVE the new setup so far. Also less floor space for them to spread stuff out = hopefully better at packing things away once finished as they won't actually have space for multiple stuff out at once. My 6 yr old is super crafty, but like you said - some paper, tape, textas, scissors are the most often used to create. And I love seeing where her imagination takes her.

Our glycerin soap making kit comes out twice a year. The crystal growing kit...came out super small. I think all those small extra beads and craft parts could go into one giant spare items clear jar, limited space. They came in a kit, but they can be repurposed. For me, creativity can also come from random items put into new configurations once they are disassociated from the original purpose. But limit the storage, yes.

My kids are grown and out of the house, but I'M the one who hates throwing/giving away my craft supplies! 😂 I don't want to admit that my creative juices have dried up. And I love to be the person who can supply a need. You're having a sixties' party and need a vintage tablecloth? I've got it! 😂 It's a travel theme and you'd like old suitcases? I've got it! 😂😂 Sunday school class needs a costume? I've got that too. 😂😂😂 The question I ask myself most is, if I keep it am I willing to dust it? You are giving your children a great gift, teaching them to not hold on to things too tightly. ❤️ Time for me to go look through my craft supplies. And I agree, drawers are the best for storage. Cubes and cubbies, not so hot.

Any additional thoughts on grown up crafts? Knitters, crocheters, quilters etc are notorious for accumulating tons of craft supplies. I’m drowning in yarn and sewing fabric!

I would LOVE to see a video about minimalist baby and toddler toys and activities. I have a 6 month old and a 19 month old and work full time at home, so I would love some ideas about the minimum they need and how to get them to not get bored quickly and want a screen or me to directly entertain them, would also love activity ideas for us to do together too! Also, I love how well behaved ur kids are and would love to know ur house rules and discipline techniques;)

I do not have any advice lol. I so needed this video. I recently removed all craft stuff from it's designated spot because I couldn't easily get to anything. I moved it all downstairs to a table to sort through it when I'm ready. This was very helpful and will rewatch when I'm going through it. Thank you for your help as always!

Wonderful video! My kids are very artistic and keeping supplies manageable can be challenging! I have been decluttering alot lately and it is surprising how well the kids embrace it! I think they realize how much better it is to live and play in an organized place and they feel bad tossing so much junk...my kids have been happy to say no to things they don’t need now or saving their money for one bigger thing rather than lots of clutter. Kids sometimes understand better than us adults 😁❤️.

We use those same drawers from Ikea for dressers. Each of our kids has one. They fit really well in closets (using the full depth) and the drawers are big enough to hold quite a bit (even when the kids don't fold things). Our bigger girls (14, 13, 12) fold their clothes so they can fit more, or they hang extra things like dresses and sweatshirts that would take up too much space. My rule is that it needs to fit in their dresser or be hung up... anything that ends up on the floor is "excess" and we can let it go. ;)

I just bought that big shelf for my scrapbooking stuff 😂 I'm going to make paper shelves all along the top row though so it should hold all of my different papers very nicely! I'm excited to get it all put together!

Shallow drawer units are great for craft storage, both for limiting/containing and access. Just wish I would have been to ikea a few weeks ago to pick some up for my girls, would have been a fun makeover for their room. * I think once we get through these long weeks at home there will be lots of clarity about what we really want to take time to use and what didn’t make the cut. In the meantime we’ll keep working through the house to reset the spaces that need another layer of the onion peeled.

Crafts are one of the hardest things for me! I don’t have very many sentimental things so crafts make up the largest part of my stuff and it’s so hard to get rid of stuff. But I do often ask “could I use this still?” And the answer is always yes 🤦🏻‍♀️ lol

Always a great video, such a comfort in these times and so practical! I looked at your description box to see if I could find where you said your adorable pastel vertical striped scoop neck top with short ruffled sleeves came from (is it new - it is perfect on you) but I could not locate this info. Can you say more about it? Delighted that you continue to share.

Convicted! Peeling some more off my craft layers. Good option for us sewers looking to declutter our stash: we may be able to see masks for health care workers. I saw something in the paper about this yesterday and today googled sewing masks and it popped up with blue cross/allina link☺

What do you do with a 68 year old grandmother 👵 who has a hard time getting rid of thing, “will I use it (insert time frame here)”? That time frame is my challenge for this quarantine time. If I don’t get my projects done during this time, they go.

I wish I could give credit to who first said this, but we have to be careful not to keep things for our "fantasy" self: the person we wish we were that will actually use complicated fitness equipment and make fancy dinners in that specialized pot, or read the 12 volume set of the Story of Civilization. I'm trying to only keep things the "me I'm stuck with" will use.

I know what you mean about craft kits not working! My daughter’s bath bomb kit didn’t work until I searched how to make bath bombs on RU-vid. It turned out that it needed a lot more oil then the instructions suggested. We also never had luck with those crystal growing kits. Always enjoy your videos!

I'm glad you found the IKEA Alex drawers. They are the best. I use the wider version for my sewing supplies and for nightstands in our bedroom. Yes, I know there are many drawers but they keep all of the things we use (including the current book I'm reading) neatly under control. I like the look of your new creative area. I like "Will I use this"? This will be my question as I sort my craft area.

Realizing that it is not stuff that entertains our kids, it is imagination. Wow. That is a gamechanging perspctive. Also some of the questions you asked your kids. Is this special enough? Do you want to (while iimplying ofcourse you can)? Do you see yourself using this in the next week? do you see us taking the time to figure this out?
