The point is to deter other journalists by establishing a credible threat of a punishment large enough (12 years stuck in various rooms, including prison, and the possible threat of life there, is a awful enough to provide the USG with an acceptable level of deterrence. They probably have a statistical model that said 12 years was likely a sufficient punishment.

I know employees of Boeing that were horrified by how their corporate employers are balancing profit with lives. After all, it's their livelihoods on the line as well!

Litigate and sue Boeing management and get a judgement to force sale its shares to the workers.
