Wow, thank you for taking the time to do this wonderful video. I think you were the 1st video on RU-vid to drop about tbis new version after Topaz drop their Topaz Video AI 4 trailer. I really enjoyed it and most likely i will see this video a 2nd time. Most likely i will get this new version when their Black Friday deal comes around next month, i could see they already have their black friday page but is not live yet. Anyways thamk you again, i really appreciate it....❤🎉❤🎉❤
I've found that cleaning up the original video with Nyx and then doing the upscale with Iris (tweaking different settings depending on the source video) works phenomenal for animation. I have the 1980s Silverhawks series that I'm fully restoring (cleaning up audio, upscaling to 1080p, then color correcting scene by scene in Premiere) and the results I'm getting are far better than most official studio-released HD remasters I've seen from animated shows and movies. I have yet to get the results I want with live action, but I think that's just a matter of needing to play around more myself and learn some different tweaks.
That was a really detailed review. I think what works best really depends on what type of video you process. I have walked through all the models and settings on some rather old(ish) home video (shot with a point and shoot digital camera from 2005-2007 era) in 640x480 (VGA) and carefully analyzed the previews just like you did in the video and without any doubt found that Nyx was doing the best job for my source video.
I'm a big fan of the IRIS model, I think it's better than GAIA in most cases. I ripped a 576p PAL video, deinterlaced and then upscaled to HD with IRIS and it looks like a soft bluray. It's REALLY good.
I basically stopped using GAIA. I feel like IRIS gets the job done without any noticeable artifacts. To me, ARTEMIS is just too aggressive and artifacting. GAIA is too weak.
Artemis is a finisher, it denoises and "burns in". If source allow you can use Gaia and addition Artemis HQ. Problem can happen when you look for examples faces a long distance, Artemis is more invasiv than Gaia.
i would recommend to anyone to buy it if upscaling is a constant thing u need to do, if its on sale then even more reason to get it, for what it does its worth every penny, countless times ive been saved by this software
I keep the 2.6 version as well- because they are completely different programs. From 3.0 on- it is FFMPEG based program. 2.0 was not. In fact the earlier version up to 2.6.4 is called Topaz Video Enhance AI, while the new program from 3.0 on is called Topaz Video AI. so, in essence and name, they are two different programs with two different engines.
original square pixel is the fixed Display Aspect Ratio or SAR, while Original Pixel Type is the actually square pixel, the names should be inverted lol
I pre-ordered the software and installed it the day after release. I'm not massively impressed, but I'm not an expert in its use so I'm sure tuorials will help.....
Great video 😎 Looks to be well worth it when aiming for the upgrade on a Black Friday deal 🎉 I use it for upscaling motion graphics mainly and am interested in the slo-mo feature... could you do a render time focussed video to see whether any improvements (currently on V2.6) on that score would be much appreciated 🌟
Good video. This comment isn’t anything upscaling related but rather frame interpolation. IMO, I leave it off for most media/content that’s owned by popular movie brands. I only leave it on as a choice for unofficial media/content that wasn’t owned by movie studios yet. It’s really personal preference. People can experiment on this and see which one they prefer over the original. There’s a list of video frame rates listed here that I prefer enhancing to: 10fps -> 60fps (x6) 15fps -> 60fps (x4) 24fps -> 48fps (x2; same as 50fps but with 2 frames removed) 25fps -> 50fps (x2; similar to 60fps but with slight jitteriness) 30fps -> 60fps (x2) 50fps and 60fps were left alone since they’re already recorded in those frame rates. I only enhance 24fps and 25fps 2 times so that I don’t lose any original frames when going over that. I like to have the new frames Ai creates in between its original frames. I don’t have this software but I have Flowframes which can only enhance frame rates but doesn’t do any upscaling.
Nyx will reduce quality of low quality video, it’s best for blue ray to 4k etc. iris for face/skin 1080p ish . Your not showing the manual mode where the power is. One thing I’ve found thru experimenting that you should try, select your enhance model, iris , set to manual ,click estimate (I set left secret to original "always". Go ahead and set all adjustments to "0" not all adjustments are far left for 0. Now preview, notice 0 has still added effect tho set all to 0 note I still set improve detail global option to 0. I have been lately using a preset 0 and using it when auto or manual + estimate w/ slight tweaks isn’t getting it done.
Good video! But it would be nice if you can use a real world home made clip 480 or 720 video so you can see how well it work. I’ve tried the version before this one on one of my clip (480 to 1080p & even 4K). But the end result wasn’t that impressive. Plus it take almost 2 hrs for a 10 minute clip upscale into 4K…😬
Many people scales 480p up to 4k but this makes often no sense! You gain not more details by upscaling SD to 4k instead to 1080p. Best way is choose end resolution depending on how sharp the source allows *without artefacts* In other words: When you watch your result at the video native size, is it sharp or not? This indicates you have choosen the right resolution. For example when you have made a 4k unsharp video, then 4k makes no sense.
Let's see if you can try with a "dvd" in a DVD format, see if the program really works correctly, a DVD file, and see how you can get it to go to 4K. thank you.
@@Upscaled_HT That is to say, you don't have enough information, I have been doing the DVD upscaling to 4K for a year now and it turns out perfect... upscaling a 1080 is a child's thing.
I'm already aware of the answer, but I still need to inquire. I'm intrigued by the Black Friday sale offering the video and photo package. However, I currently own a Mac Air M1 (8GB) variant. Given that I frequently use action cameras for my cycling videos, and they often come out weak and noisy, I recognize the value of this AI solution. I genuinely want to assess whether the $249 investment is justified, considering my existing setup. Upgrading my Mac isn't feasible right now, so any insights or feedback would be greatly appreciated.
I’m not sure what action camera you’re using but have you considered getting one that’s less noisy? I’ve seen some really good go pro or Dji action camera footage that looks really good unless you’re filming at low light. I don’t have any experience with Macs, so I can’t comment on performance other than topaz says they’re supported.
@@Upscaled_HT I use GoPro, Insta360 One X3 and iPhone 14 Pro for my vlogs but GoPro and Insta360 have the worse output in low light and or poor light conditions. So hoping to improve these videos especially night shots using Topaz but before I invest 300 I want to under will MacBook Air M1 (8 GB) will be sufficient

Hello, thank you very much for the video, very informative! Your program is very fast, it processes the previews in a couple of seconds. Can you please tell me what are your computer specs? CPU and video card performance? I would like to understand what I need to improve. Because now a 2 sec preview is processed for 5-10 minutes.
You totally failed regarding de-interlease video. You miss to select interleased video type on Enhance section. It really dissapear artifacts on odd-even frames.
Iris Face is very good in scenes with slow movements and close faces, the result is fantastic but Iris can have poor results in fast and distant scenes in videos with very low quality. For upscaling or just improving progressive videos with medium+ quality, Iris is my favorite module.
I wonder what AI upscalers will be capable of in 10 years. They'll probably create realistic CGI and 3D models over the image, capable of turning 240p to 4k. Sounds crazy at the moment but the technology is definitely there. Who saw coming not 3 years ago that Ai image generators will be a thing.
The optimist in me is also saying "Who saw coming not 3 years ago?" but the pessimist in me is saying "Turning 240p to 4k? I'm sure this has it's limits".
i mean, Ai is already creating images out of nothing. No matter how low the resolution is, Ai can pretty much replicate it, as long as it looks convincing who cares, for example if the AI detects a "stop sign" instead of trying to upscale it, they're simply going to generate a 3D model over it or something@@pkbeast
@@TheGamingChad. I now understand what you mean about the CGI and 3D images now. Wow that's an interesting concept. I was just thinking about the limits of filling in the blanks from the surrounding pixels or using before and after frames for reference when interpolating, but compositing CGI (or Stable Diffusion) over the original footage (or image)... Oooh that's just got me tingling!
yeah, for example, since Ai struggles with symmetry, if there's a car in the distance, instead of Ai trying to upscale it, its simply going to use a 3D model over it and have its lighting/angle adjusted, what if image upscalers had a huge library of 3D assets, so no matter what you throw at them. they'll be capable of upscaling anything. Generic things like grass, trees and rocks are fairly easy to upscale as they don't require symmetry, but man-made objects are typically symmetrical, however, Ai still struggles with upscaling hair lmao, but yeah, technology is advancing at a rapid pace, its impossible to predict whats gonna pop up out of nowhere in 5 years@@pkbeast
So, I have some thoughts on the demo trial version. I tried converting a video file that was 1868x1072 to 4k and after an hour it crashed my computer (and my computer is a beast of 16 core amd top of the line and 64 gigs of ram etc), but the file still converted only 28 minutes of it. After reviewing the 28 minutes it looked really solid it got rid of all the grainy look of an older tv show, however, a few draw backs did show up. Primary some of the girls makeup looked really filtered and photoshopped, and even a boys face looked a little off when it was a close up shot. For example, one of the boys close up the AI very clearly over exaggerated the nose and mouth wrinkle when he smiled and it looked weird since he was a teenager (it was like out of color black/dark lines for his wrinkles when he smiled) , but in fairness to the AI the wrinkles are indeed there in the original file, however the AI simply over does it in the clip and/or does the wrong/darker color. Also, another thing to consider is your actual monitor or tv source, so I was watching the converted file on my 5k monitor(and it wasn't as noticeable quality increase) but its a wide screen so its technically less than 4k, but after watching it on my 4k tv the results were very clear that the older 2010 kind of grainy quality was gone and the only real drawbacks was the random split second overly done wrinkles and certain makeup on women that looked kind of soap opera or washed out (I call it the Pretty little liars intro filter, and if you don't know what I mean watch the intro for that show). However, the rest looked either normal or really crisp good looking. So, It's kind of like 95% awesome, but that last 5% kind of breaks the illusion (and its since its mostly has drawbacks on close up shots it feels kind of random and breaks that illusion) and reminds you of the AI upscaling, so it's hard to give a solid score. It kind of reminds of VR, in that VR is amazing until your screen turns partially white during a movie or game (screen door effect) or you walk to the boundary, or the cord wraps around your leg and it breaks your immersion. AI upscaling is amazing just like VR but it has that last hurdle to kind of get over before it is 100% the standard and everyone will love. Another thing to consider when converting to 4k and that is that people's face's/ up close shots and if they have any imperfection's (e.g. pimples, acne, small bumps it is magnified with 4k and the AI will also make the imperfections stick out even More, so...yeah. Then if they are wearing makeup to try to cover it it up it still shows up and just looks weird, so its a little interesting to rewatch some older tv/movies to 4k...)
Thanks for a great overview - Q. Do you always leave the Recover Detail at default of 20? I used to experiment with this too to see how low I can go before artefacts appear in the old V2 version where you decreased the number to enhance more. It seems in V4 you increase it? I have seen some demos setting it to 100! What is you recommendation?
You never played the clip after using iris on the weird science clip except for half a second so we only just saw the result on a still frame ughhh......
topaz all the way. dvdfab just jumped on thr bandwagon i dont think there serious with it. and handbrake will give you basic up scaling it wont improve much. similar to premiro pro's basic upscaling.
3:18 I can also say at this point that I can't use all the graphics cards I have two RTX3090 in my workstation. The program does not want to use them both at the same time, so unfortunately only run it on 1 GPU. I thought I might solve it by putting an NVLink over it, but that had no effect within the program either.
@@Upscaled_HT Hi bro can you tell me that how much time it takes during rendering from 10 minute 1080p to 4k video? Based on your graphic card RTX 3060
Do you still need to do preprocessing for older video material? Or Anime? As previously, for these two, the AI was very weak and even produced "garbage".
I'm upscaling a movie. I can't find the export video. The last version 3.5.4 and before this allways export in the folder where it is the movie. This time there isn't there.
I am currently using the program and having quite a bit of success. I am however having a few small issues with committing my final projects to Blu-ray discs. I believe that I have all of my settings correct as I have had some perfect successful specimens rendered all the way to disc level. Would you be impossibly doing some consulting? Is there any way for me to contact you to discuss a one-time fee for an hour of personalized information time ?
I’m wanting to upscale some old video files on my computer …. But my question is, what hardware does your computer need for this to be practical? I recently built a new PC: i7 - 13700K, RTX 4070, 32GB RAM…. Will this be sufficient?
@@danielsierra4718 tout à fait : j'ai fais le test sur un bout de vidéo avec une rtx 2060 un peu ancienne : gpu : 20mn env, cpu (équivalent en ancienneté au gpu) : 4h30 !
Can this enhance low light video (read grainy, soft, crushed shadows, lack of details, blown highlights & noise) like Pixel Video boost? To me that's true AI coz the model is taking all the decisions instead of the user.

@@Upscaled_HT I tried the demo on some I have myself and While "Iris" can get some sharp faces it seems a bit weird with the rest of the video being more blurry, and also more artifacts and sometimes "ghost faces" were there shouldn't be a face. "Proteus" seems to do a more natural look, although the faces are not as sharp.
I work post production for fhe past 20 years. It can't interpolate correctly. To much AI between cut scenes, makes the video unusable. Perhaps it's good for upscale mainly on the original framerate of the source. Good for content creators maybe.
@@Upscaled_HTthat makes no sense logically that ver is very dated slower in render speed and models aren't as of high quality as the newest People online are so strange maybe their cheap
I have an old version of Topaz Video Enhance AI and I have to say I'm not impressed at all with this newer version. They STILL haven't fixed their AWFUL deinterlace feature. Aside from the layout, I see little change. So, why would I give them more money? I typically upscale cartoons & other animated material. My current version 2.6 will suffice for now. The newer versions don't make me want to shell out another $400 for it. They're going to need to improve greatly before it'll ever be worth the upgrade.
Wonder what the speed is on this version (for me that is, I only have as my GPU Quadro t1000) To be honest every single version of topaz I've used is three times slower than topaz topaz 2.64 With the sole exception of topaz video AI 3.0.11, which is nearly as fast as 2.64. Can anyone tell me why all of the other versions of topaz at three times slower? What is the point of these upgrades if they're slower.
As an "exercise" in upscaling this is a great tutorial, however since Blu-Ray "Hollywood" movies are very inexpensive, is it really worth the time and effort in trying to get "Blu-Ray" quality when in fact you're never going to really get Blu-Ray (HD) quality? Close, yes. But not quite there - yet. Also if one is looking for really, really, good quality, many movies are available in UHD (4K) disks. John Wick: Chapters 1-3 [4K UHD] for about $33USD or about $11 a disc seems reasonable. Not sure it's worth all the time and effort to try to get SD (approximately 480i or 480p) to HD and one can forget about UHD (about 4K). That said, there's alot (millions of hours?) of home movie footage (VHS, Beta, DV all SD) from the late 1970's to the mid 2000's that were not captured on 35mm movie film that can really use any kind of help it can get. This is where Topaz Video AI can make a difference since there is no other alternative available. Almost all theatrically released movies since the 1920's were shot with 35mm or 70mm film, there is (other than the expense) no problem remastering these films and making them look great on Discs (or streaming). Even some very famous TV series and "Soap Operas" were shot in SD, "All in the Family" comes to mind - and it ain't pretty, in fact it looks awful, by todays standards. The focus IMHO should be on trying to make the old consumer formats at least semi watchable on modern "big screen" TVs and since Topaz Video AI keeps getting better, this technology may be our only hope.
I would not recommend upscaling something that’s available on blu ray. I don’t do that. I chose John wick since I already had the trailer and I could then compare the results to the original 1080p quality. I use the program for content that’s not available on blu ray.
