The Topeak Journey bike trailer is quite awesome, and pulls straight as an arrow. While it did take a lot of internal debate on which trailer to go with between the Journey and one of the B.O.B. trailers, the fact that it is made of Aluminum and weights the least of the bunch was my deciding factor in the end. I believe that I made the right choice, but either way I really love this trailer!

I'd had this trailer for couple of years. Done with it a couple of big camping trips. It's all right. The quality is very good, but I sold it because when you go slow fully loaded, it really influence the balancing of the whole bicycle. It's a nature of one-wheel trailers overall, because the trailer must be stiffly coupled with the bike on its tilt axis., which means it leans with the bike. So when it's heavy and it wants to wobble you can really fill it and you must concentrate otherwise you are making big zigzags on the road. It's stressful and can get really dangerous on busy roads. So when you are going to make big trips with a lot of baggage i would strongly recommend getting a two wheel trailer. Sure, it pulls you back like any other trailer would, and you must mind the bigger width on thinner paths but it never rocks your bike.

I have had this trailer for a few years now, and love it. However, I haven't used for a few years because I stripped the bolt head of the adapter that goes on the bike. You have to unbolt your rear wheel to take the wheel off. And a replacement is $70. Really glad someone else likes it so much too.

I see one that's almost identical set up though the trailer wheel has a spring, and it's only $135 Australian. I've lost my license and need to carry a large toolbag that weighs about 30+kgs when it's full of power tools etc, and I need a way to carry them around town but when I seen the hook up is almost like a rigid setup I was a litte worried that turning may be a problem but you mentioned that turning was fine so is their anything particular I should look out out for when I go look at a cheaper version of this, yes I know I should probably buy the original but I'm not so is there any part on that one that was a little tricky or didn't quite want to work as intended as a cheaper copy is probably made worse and cause more of a problem... Any advice would be appreciated

I have this trailer and love it, have you considered adding power to the trailer in the form of a dynamo hub. a 20 spoke hub will run maxed out due to the smaller diameter wheel, even a rim dynamo should be a viable charging source.

This weighs even less than half as the Burley Coho XC steel framed trailer! With the Burley there is a nice very wide kickstand on the trailer that holds the bike and the trailer upright. The Burley also has a really neat quick release way to fold the wheel into the trailer and take off the hitch and store in the trailer without using tools for small storage that's really nice. I really like how Topeak has such a nice waterproof bag. I don't know if Burley has that or not. I'm new to all of this. Thanks for sharing as the Topeak is a serious consideration of mine.

What’s the thoughts on trailers with Shocks versus trailers without shocks the price difference isn’t very drastic part maybe by 100 102 150 bucks extra that I seen for a Bob gear trailer with shock was like 450 in a Bob gear trailer with no shock also $100 cheaper

I emailed Topeak with this query but no response. I wondered if anyone on here had any ideas (I have photos). Good Morning, I’m after a little advice with one of your products. A customer has asked me to fit a through axle adapter to his new bike so that he can use his Topeak Journey Trailer. The through axle he has bought is the TX Axle Kit P15. Using the spacers, I installed the through axle. However, the length of the axle does not fit the trailer. The centre distance for the outer locators on the axle are 265mm but the openings on the trailer connectors are at 235mm centres. I’ve attached photos showing the proble. I can’t see anyway to make this fit and I can’t see a way of shortening the axle. Am I missing something? I’ve assumed that stretching open the A frame on the trailer is not a good idea as this would stress the aluminium. Is there two types of trailer? i.e. narrow A frame and wide A frame? Is there a shorter axle with connectors at 235mm centres? Have we got the correct through axle? Is there a way of shortening this axle and therefore reduce the centre distance of the connectors? Please respond.

one is steel, one is aluminum. steel is much cheeper. both sell dry bags that work until they get holes, which you will need some skill with vinyl patches to fix. skills (lack of) are usually what cause a great deal of angst and bad reviews with American consumers.

BOB trailers should via the Robert Axle project. I have the Yak. The Top Peak is lighter but I am unsure by how much as claimed weights are fuzzy regarding the trailer alone or whether including the bag. My guess is under 4lbs max. The Yak is great and has a grate like bottom not reqiring a bag to use it as there are no large gaps. Cromoly has advantages over aluminum as steels have a fatigue limit or can go through infinite numbers of fatigue cycles without failure(a coil spring is a good example of this...there are no aluminum coil springs as they eventually fail) also , more importantly is the Yak could be repaired by almost anyone with basic welding, no so much with aluminum. Realistically though neither would be likely scenarios unless you intend to go on a long tour. Just saying that the Yak should not be passed over.
@richarddort5889
@richarddort5889 6 лет назад
I got word from the Robert Axel Project. It cannot be used with their axels because the yoke has to be spread wider to fit. That can be done to any of the steel trailers but not the aluminum Topeak one.

Considering the kilograms that you load in the trailer (+-45kg), the aluminum structure can last a life or two. Cycling with care is something to consider to avoid breaking down the frame. Still aluminum is used in aeronautics parts.. I guess is good enough to carry 45kg. I ride around with my town bicycle for 10 years, aluminum frame, had few heavy falls (too many beers), I do transport all my groceries. The aluminum frame still like new.

I have had the Bob trailer for over 24 years. It has been on several long distance tours and it's extremely well built. Works super well on single track and fast long down hills. Like Yosemite to the bottom near Buckeye Flats. Passed several cars, have noticed whoever has this trailer on the decents is the fastest. The bottom metal mesh is staring to break off the frame, a few zip ties have resolved this issue. I have a magnetic rear light attached and it flashes every rotation. It's called a Red Alert. Have replaced the yoke once along with the rear rim with a sealed bearing. Also replaced the noisy aluminum fender with a plastic mtb fender. I am currently using my trailer to haul wood for the winter. I also have custom mounted the trailer mounting bolts to my Surly Troll frame so it doesn't interfere with my axle, it attaches just above the rear axle by about 2 inches. So now the trailer has way more off-road clearance. I think I payed $199 back in 1998 without the bright yellow bag. Deffinately a work horse that has lasted many years. Well worth my initial investment.

Yes I know it is for a bicycle but will it work for a small scooter? I have a 2015 Honda PCX150 (75mph GPS top speed) and have been researching small trailers to use. I can make a mount to adapt to the trailer. My question is would it handle 55-60 mph maintained speeds for hours? Just a thought as to this would be perfect for trips and camping.
@galehess6676
@galehess6676 6 лет назад
first thought is absolutely if you keep payload at 50# or less for sure, even 75-100 might be fine, just change the bearings every 15k miles or so, and/or don't get them wet.. and just keep in mind the bumps are going to be hard on it, even the BOB Ibex needs eased through rough sections...
@galehess6676
@galehess6676 6 лет назад
I would go with BOB trailer for better connection (less (never) breakage) and so you're not out the $70 for parts every few years, and cheaper up front and only advanatage for topeak is 3# lighter and who cares with a scooter, the BOB 's chromoly would hold up better for you anyhow

I agree....this thing is waaaay to expensive...but so are two ortlieb panniers for $250...so is $700 for a light weight two man tent...and we can go on and on for a long time...look at the bright side of it...once you got it...you got it...You can easily pay $450 for two nights in a decent hotel !! And you have nothing to show for your money !!

likely the issue is people buying things they don't really need- for this phenom, price is everything. because the desire to resell it is going to prevail in a year or three. bikes and bike gear are instant gratification for many , many consumers.

Half the load in the trailer is down-hitch weight on the bike frame. Same with all single rear wheel trailers. The whole point of a trailer is to try to get the down-force OFF the bicycle.
@urastus9202
@urastus9202 2 года назад
Consider if you loaded 70lbs in this trailer. If you lift from the attachment point (hitch end) of the trailer, it would be very easy. There is some weight on the hitch - I don't know how to calculate that.

I think trailers are worth the purchase! ...but you'll need to consider certain flaws in the build and develop a DIY attitude to remedy those issues. Whether you're thinking about a single-wheeled, double-wheeled, low-boy, or a seat post trailer ...aluminum is fine, though I would do a search to find chromoly --it's light like aluminum, but it's hard & welds like steel. The hitch-piece to a low-boy trailer(if connected via rear axle) doesn't leave room for a kickstand unless attached to the bike's frame. And unless you get the hitch-piece perfected centered, it'll cause issue with the bike itself, especially if you have disc brakes. As far as the connector pins/bolts? ...they are usually made with what is called *poor metal alloy* which will result in very easily snapping those pins/bolts. Swap them out with galvenized bolts with galvenized nuts. And also make sure you have a thru-axle when you're looking at 2-wheeled trailers ...not those pop-in/pop-out pegs that are attached to the wheels. And for that matter you'll want to swap out the thru-axle with a piece of(I recommend 1.04") galvenized threaded bar.

If you are going to do a video on a product as this there is absolutely no point in telling us how great it is. With out showing “in detail” how it connects to your bike. It may not connect to all bikes. However with our “seeing” the connection “in detail” we can determine if it will work for us. Too we can see what adapting or adapters may apply to our bike. You can tell us how fantastic, wonderful, the best ever, it tracks so well...etc....etc. Does not matter. If we can’t come to an “understanding” as to it’s connection “to the bike” the video is meaningless.
