Topo Athletic MTN Racer 2 review.
This is one that a lot of you guys have been asking for so here it is! The Mountain Racer 2 was a shoe I was looking forward to testing out at the channel. After running and reviewing the Topo Ultraventure 2 earlier in the year and enjoying my time in the shoe, I've been excited to run in another shoe from their trail running line up and the MTN Racer 2 has a lot of features that I like in a trail running shoe. Check out the review to see how we got on and if the MTN Racer 2 out performs the Ultraventure 2.

Oh nice!! Been waiting for this review. I own the Ultraventure 2 and the Mtn Racer 2. I felt like the upper material in the UV-2 was too stretchy and my foot had more lateral movement. I wish they went with MegaGrip across both shoes. Been really loving the Mtn Racer 2 though. Gotta pick up the Ultra Glide when it is available for discount.

got myslef a pair of these thanks to this review. it is actually true to size but you have to "stretch it" a bit. after 60K the shoes begin to respond very well. Did they stretch vertically? I just got a pair, and while the size (length and width) feels perfect, I don't have enough space vertically. The bottom of the eyestay presses the top of my foot. Do you think this will get better with use?

As someone who loves both shoes, where they start to separate is in the long distance. The topo over long distances is just so comfortable. While I love the torrent for it snappy light weight feel short to medium runs. The nod on traction goes to the topo as well. Traction on the torrent is pretty good is most conditions to be fair

I am dealing with my first instance of PF at the moment, running in 10mm drop trail shoes from ASICS. The wider toe box of Altra and Topo sound like they could help based on my research of toe splay preventing PF. Have you tried a pair of Topo shoes yet Chris? How is your PF?

Good review as always I had the 1st version of this shoe enjoyed it didn’t like the thin tongue don’t think it needed a rock plate just a bit more cushion! Only swapped them when the vibram peeled of a section of the sole after 80 km .Need a comparison video now Topo Ultra glides Cascadia16 . You’ll enjoy the grip on the VJ ( Butyl rubber) cushioning great but fits a bit snug tough Kevlar upper Keep up the good work 👍

I just purchased the Topo Ultraventure Pro which has the rock plate and the Vibram Megagrip rubber. I only have 25 miles on them, but they are fantastic so far. I had the MTN Racer original, but found that the absence of the rock plate on that shoe, while running many of technical trails in Maine, (including Appalachian trails) really put a beating on my metatarsals.

I have solely run in the topo terraventure for the past 3 iterations. I do have the ultraventure 2 and it sucks in almost every category. The terraventure 3 has none of those issues. The best thing about this shoe is that it fits my foot, locks it down and feels safe on technical trails. I am interested to see how they will incorporate more advanced midsoles in the future.
@Run4Adventure
@Run4Adventure 2 года назад
I think Topo do need to work on their midsoles in the future. A lot if the other brands are developing new softer, more responsive compounds and I think Topo are getting left behind 🤔 Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏

I've struggled with Topos fitting well. I usually have to go up 1/2 a size but the phantom 2 was enormous 1/2 a size up. I hate having to send them back online and there aren't any stores near me that carry them. I'll stick with my lone peak 5s for trails :)

So long distance but no rocky conditions, I won’t take a trail shoe on rocks without a rock plate. 5mm lugs would be good in the mud though. I’m interested, really like the quality of the construction, also like the protection in the upper. Too may trail shoes are going the road shoe upper style with just added lugs on the outsole and high stack but without purpose. Great review as always.🏃‍♂️👍😎🤘

Cheers David, really gkad you enjoyed the review 👍 Yeap I'm a big fan of a rock plate in a trail shoe, especially on the trails that I run. It really can make a big difference to underfoot protection and I think it would work well in the MTN Racer 2 🤔 Thanks for watching 🙏

Great review! I just wore these on the Tahoe 100k. I loved how grippy and versatile they were. The trail was cold, wet, and a small amount of snow and ice. The shoes held up really well! The only knock I had on them was that they felt a bit rigid on the downhill and the tongue on my left foot had a pressure point on the outside of my ankle. But overall, I was extremely happy with them 😊
@Run4Adventure
@Run4Adventure 2 года назад
I'm glad the shoes ran well and you enjoyed the experience 👍 I think the tounge could do with a bit more padding and the midsole is quite stiff. The Tahoe 100k looks epic, hope you had a good race and thanks for watching 🙏😊
@fastrax1949
@fastrax1949 3 года назад
Good thorough review, thanks. However, the Uk Topo supplier is seemingly only offering the Mango option in this shoe which I would have thought you would prefer. The thin, less padded tongue is typical of manyso called "speed"! shoes where the maker wants to save weight. Some are also only providing thin, flat bed insole in shoes above £200 which you would expect to see only on shoes less than £100! You pay more...but get less! These Topo feature a moulded Ortholite insole , don't they? As a Topo stockist here at The Complete Runner I've gone with the Ultraventure 2 as opposed to the MTN Racer as the specs are so similar. I would agree the cosmetics on the uppers are not overly exciting but it does not seem to put off Topo fans who tend to repeat buy. I prefer to stock Topo who offer a 5mm drop. I personally am not a fan of zero drop and don't offer the option to customers; frankly for fear of them injuring. I appreciate there are zero/barefoot runners out there!
@Run4Adventure
@Run4Adventure 3 года назад
Thanks Terry, I'm glad you enjoyed the review 👍 Yeah I know it's only available from the UK supplier in the orange colour but I was sent this shoe by Topo so the colour choice was out of my control. To be fair I'm not sure about the bright orange colourway, I like bright shoes but maybe that's a step to far! 😂 I totally agree with you on the Altra, Topo debate and think the Topo shoe is a much safer bet when you compare it to putting a customer into a zero drop shoe! 🤔 A lot of runners just want to buy a new shoe and go running, they don't want to take the time needed to transition into a zero drop shoe so it can lead to issues. I got on pretty well with the Ultraventure 2 and I really enjoyed the fit and feel around the midfoot, it's a very comfortable upper and its slightly cheaper 😊 Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏

Hi Loyd, I love you reviews! Keep up the good work! I have to deal with a hallux valgus which makes it hard to find a shoe which fits. I stumbled upon this shoe and was intrigued by Topo's roomy toe box. So I bought these shoes and tested them. A roomy toe box is certainly the case: lots of space for my "hobbit" feet. The tongue of the shoe is indeed very thin and comparable to INOV-8. It did not bother me, but I agree that a thicker tongue would be better. The cushioning (midsole) is OK, but like I read in previous comments, it is not a overly cushioned shoe. There is lots of groundfeel; comparable with a Saucony Peregrine. Grip is great on mud and rocks. A big disadvantage is how the outsole is made. Some parts of the sole are glued / "welded", while other brands have the sole made in one piece In my case, a part of the sole of one shoe came loose (after say 40 kilometers) at a seam where two parts met. I heard from another seller that they also had the same problem with some pairs of the MTN Racer 2. So hopefully Topo Athletic will do something about it. You want to go out on (ultra) trails with reliable shoes and unfortunately my confidence is now gone. That is really a shame, because in terms of fit and the drop, I found these shoes perfect!
@Run4Adventure
@Run4Adventure 2 года назад
Thanks Wilco, I'm glad you are enjoying the channel 😊 I also thought the MTN Racer 2 would have a slightly softer midsole and I totally agree that the Peregrine gives you more underfoot protection. One more to the list. 😂I have the ultraventure 1 and loved it but the insole really holds onto the water and the grip was crap. The cushioning is fine at the moment Mark but you'll only really know how the cushioning is going to hold up after around 200 miles and I'm nowhere near that figure yet 🤔 I'd recommend going somewhere and trying them on if you can because I'd say the MTN 2 and the Inov-8 shoe are very different in fit and feel! Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏😊

Thanks. Unfortunately no Topo dealers in Scotland. If you could expand on the differences that would really help. Though I guess it is the difference after a hundred miles that counts. Shoe that have good cushioning out of the box never seem to keep that very long. Recently done, well most of, the Ben Nevis Ultra in Inov8 Xtalon Ultra. They were just about perfect, no blisters and finished with a full set of toe nails! Out of the box they did feel quite cushioned, but this had gone by the time they had bedded in. I hear that the Xtrail fairs well in this respect. After coming off the Ben you have about 12k back up the Glen on Forestry tracks and road, my legs would have appreciated a bit of cushioning by then…though an extra twenty minutes at the last cut off would have been even better. That said it is a race where more than half don’t finish. Before giving it another go next year (if successful I will be the oldest to complete) I am going to have a shot at the Lakeland 55k, so looking for a shoe that more suits that.

@@markthomasson5077 It's a tough race when it comes to cut off!! I'd say if you run in the X-talon ultra and enjoyed them then go for the 290's but I'm not sure they'll give you a lot more when it comes to depth of cushioning? 🤔 The thing with Inov-8 shoes is they feel quite unique and you always know when you're in an Inov-8 running shoe. No other brand really feels the same! The Topo would give you a lot more width in the toe box because of the footshape design and to be fair it's not a super soft midsole compound in the MTN2. The Trailfly ultra would definitely give you a lot more depth of cushioning and I haven't found it to flatten out. Hope this helps and you find a shoe that works 😊

I’m on the fence between this shoe, the ultra glide, and the cascadia 16. It’s a shame they messed with the tounge on this one. The tongue was one of the highlights in the first version.

The new Cascadia 16 looks pretty interesting and we'll definitely be reviewing the shoe on the channel Greg. I personally would pick the Ultra Glide over the MTN Racer 2, for me it's a more comfortable shoe 👍 Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel it's appreciated 🙏

After having a good history with topo shoes working well for me I decided to try this one out. Loyd was not kidding the tongue is thinnnnnnnnn. I had to switch the laces out for flat ones and that helped but they botched the tongue. Most everything else is pretty good
@Run4Adventure

It is a shame about the Tongue Greg. I really don't know why these shoe companies do it? 🤔 Just a little bit of padding would of made all the difference. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏

What is the most cushioned topo trail shoe for long distances/ultras?

I haven't really found any Topo shoes to be that softly cushioned Bilal. I always expect them to be softer than they are. I've I had to pick one it would probably be the MTN. Hope this helps and thanks for watching and supporting the channel 🙏😊

Had 2 pairs of Topos. Love the fit and feel but no durability whatsoever. Fli-lytes upper fell apart after 250-300kms. My MTN racer 1 have got about 350 on them and still wearable but not in great condition. Glue and materials just don't seem to be the same premium quality of other brands I guess

That's a shame yo hear Jack! 😕 The MTN Racer 2 looks pretty solid so far but I guess I'll only find out as I put more miles into the shoe 🤔 . Thanks for watching the channel and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏

Pro tip… just provide good content and don’t waste my time with a long pointless intro and countless desperate attempts to get new subscribers. 1) it doesn’t work. 2) great content will get you subscribers whether you ask for subscribers or not. 3) RU-vid will recommend more of your videos to me if I actually watch a whole video. But I’m not going to watch anymore because it’s at 2:00 and you are still asking for more subscribers. Just review the damn shoes already. Take a look at videos by people like Jupiter Hikes or Homemade Wanderlust. They just jump into good content. And have lots of subscribers.

Awesome, thanks for the "PRO" tips! To be fair this video was made a few years ago and I think we've come a long way since then 😊 I'm not sure I was desperate for subscribers but I did want to grow the channel. I actually watch channels with 15 million subscribers and they still ask viewers to subscribe and I'm pretty sure they're "Pro's" 🤔 Also, this should make you happy, well maybe not but we do have a shorter intro now as well! Thanks for your words of advice, they're really appreciated 🙏
