Flat Forehand vs Topspin Forehand in Tennis - Technique & Execution of Tennis Forehand Lesson. Which one do you hit most? Your shot must change depending on the type of ball you are receiving and what you are trying to do with it. In this lesson we will help you recognise the elements required to hit the perfect forehand topspin and flat shot and when you should be doing each one.
Get more help on your forehand download our FREE guide - www.top-tennis-training.com/f...
Flat forehands usually have a much lower net clearance and allow for maximum power generation, best executed on slightly higher balls with body moving through contact. Some forehand grips are better suited to hitting flat and the stance will also play a big part.
Topspin forehands help with consistency and control, taking power off the shot without losing racquet head speed. The modern forehand grips make it easier to generate spin but they do require some getting used to.

Thanks so much for making and sharing this fantastic video. I’m an intermediate player coming back to the game after a gap of many years. As a child player I just hit the ball and went with what felt right. As an adult player I’ve taken a more systematic approach to understanding but often ran up against seemingly contradictory advice and didn’t know how it all fit together. This video along with your one on different grips has cleared up so much confusion. All the different pieces from different coaches have finally come together. Your explanations, demos and high quality production are outstanding. Thanks for the awesome work 😊👍🏻

Your content is always really high quality. This has been the best video so far I think. Really, really relevant to one of the things (there are many) I’m trying to work on. Tend to hit pretty flat but trying to learn how and when to add more top to improve my consistency. Thanks for the excellent video!! You’ve asked lots of other people in reply to their comments what lesson they’d like to see next. If I may........ Maybe something along the lines of “things the pros know and do that amateurs don’t but could”. Thanks again.

I watched this over and over, when either of you are actually hitting the ball your arm moves so quick I see it at start of swing (racquet in slot) and after contact (finish elbow bent and racquet placed in the backpack). Do you have any that shows hits but in slow motion so I can see what you are doing? In my head I am trying to hit the shot you are advocating but the results not the same. I am not getting it. Another great video guys! Definitely use more topspin for rallies and sharp angle shots , then flatten it more for balls above the net , for more aggressive shots and put-aways . Almost all shots I make have some topspin though even on the flatter shots . I like the exercise you gave at the end with the up the line and then inside out to the backhand . One of the best videos for me on youtube that's helped me a ton, watched it multiple times already.... Quick question guys, I'm a 5'8''~9'' 35yr old playing at a 4.0~4.5 lvl who's aiming to get to a solid 4.5~5.0 lvl... I learned the game in my junior years using the eastern grip, and with the modern game moving towards the Semi-Western grip I've been trying to gradually change my grip over the last few years. It's been a difficult path and I find it especially hard when trying to hit any shot which requires some wrist manipulation (ex. running buggy whip crosscourt forehand) as I don't have a flexible wrist... should I still continue to try to make the switch? I think taller guys have it better w the Eastern grip since they have a higher starting clearance for hitting the ball through and I'm not not that tall so....I'm currently in between eastern and semi-western, just wanted some expert advice :) Thanks!
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 3 года назад
Thank you for watching 👍 That’s a tough question, the main thing I’m wondering is what made you want to change grips originally? I’ve played around with all the forehand grips and stuck with eastern. I prefer it for many reasons but other players may benefit from the semi, but they need to know what the end goal is with their forehand
@JJVee427
@JJVee427 3 года назад
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Thanks for the reply! My end goal is to just improve my forehand and get to the ~5.0 lvl. The reason for switching is that SW grip has been the preferred grip for many players today as you know... and also that eastern is harder to play against topspin and high forehands esp if you're not that tall....you would need to take the ball earlier which is not always easy and just thought it could be better to gradually switch...but I'm experiencing that it's not easy to switch grips either and Eastern has it's own benefits also. Therefore I'm kinda stuck w what to do atm, I do feel like Eastern could be better for Doubles play which is what's played mainly here in S.Korea.

Dearr TTT folks, Thank You !! Great educational video as always. One big problem a lot of 4.0 & 4.5 have is to control the power when they switch from brushing up to flattening out and vice versa especially during match plays (nerves). Any tips or visualization that might help us make sure we are not over-hitting the ball while flattening or brushing too much while switching back and forth ??

Practice, practice and some more practice 👍 You can’t cheat when it comes to the feel on a shot. Focus on brushing with the spin, extending with the flat 👍 All the best Simon

Great instruction. Error at 13:13 where he says “flat shot” where he is actually referring to dipping with top spin.

Focus on finishing across your chest with the elbow. Hold that position for a second and work on it daily

Great video!! So for low balls I should try for open stance and spin and for high balls neutral stance and flatter shot right?

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Our coaches here discourage using open stance for beginners. But I find it more comfortable for imparting top spin..makes more sense from a bio mechanical point of view as well. So I was very happy to see you talk about it as well. 😀

I am a beginner who is shifting from the eastern forehand grip that I started with a year ago to a semi-western one. Currently, I use what some call a sub semi-western grip - where the knuckle of the index finger is on bevel 4 (as in a normal SW grip) but the heel of the hand is more along bevel 3 (as in a normal Eastern grip). I have started finding a good balance between pace and spin with this grip, so I have been reconsidering whether to fully shift to the SW grip at all. However, I feel insecure about my current hybrid grip because it is not a style that is recommended or even discussed in most sources of authoritative information on tennis. What would you say to a player who came to you with this scenario and asked for your thoughts on it? Love your channel. Keep up the good work. :)
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 3 года назад
If it works for you, why change it? Many players use slight hybrids 👍

2 questions, 1) is the RPM blast rough string good??- I use it , and 2) what is the best string you recommend? What do you use
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 3 года назад
I like RPM. The best string is different for every player, experiment and see what suits your game
