This program seems like a great supplement and a great way to introduce the kiddos to amazing literature that I'm not already familiar with. I am SO excited!
I'm so glad it was helpful! I felt so excited when I first learned about Torchlight too :) It can definitely be a struggle at the beginning to get everything figured out / nail down a schedule, etc. but it's so rewarding to see them so engaged in great literature! Let me know how it goes!

You're the best! I'm so glad I found you. I love the idea of a 4 day school week, but how do you let go of not doing how it's planned out in the manual? I'm not even a super organized person, but I taught kindergarten in public school before I had kids, so it's hard for me to go "off plan". 🤪 But I'm looking forward to the flexibility at the same time.

I’m even more excited about starting level K next year now so thank you! This year I am loosely doing Torchlight pre-k with my 4 year old and loving it. My son is very much a visual learner so I love the weekly inquiry each week. If the subject interests my son then I find different videos to watch about that subject. We will also be doing LOE foundations and RightStart math as well.
Great review! was super helpful. Can you tell me how you fit in math and english in your week? Meaning do you start with torchlight in the am then move on to Math then english. How many hours of focused learning do you typically do at level K ?

In general though, I do torchlight in the morning and then math/english in the afternoon when my 2 year old is napping primarily because I don't trust her around all the manipulatives and letting the older girls focus. For K, we do most of the readings in about 1-1.5 hours on Monday morning and then read a couple of chapters from the chapter books the other days throughout the week. Then 30-40 mins for math and english combined a day. Then in addition we have art, science or piano for about 20 mins a day most days. Friday is an off day for us so we focus on nature and outings on that day.
We just purchased the torchlight k curriculum. I noticed that they are including a a pdf file for a science alternative schedule. Its called scientific connections through inquiry. Is that something you used or recommend using?
I really like your videos.Do you think I could shorten the K curriculum? If so, How would you suggest I do that? My daughter is 6 1/2 and just completed K at private school but was not a good fit. She is reading 3rd grade level books independently but loved to be read aloud. I think she would enjoy 1st grade books/ancient history but I would hate for her to miss traveling around the world. Since I am new to HS, I was hoping for some guidance in this respect. Thanks for all you tips. Your daughters have such precious momma
Thank you so much! I understand not wanting to miss out on level K since it has some of my favorite books! Honestly, if she loves to read and will sit for the readings, the actual books go very quickly. So you could do Level 1 M-Th and just do the readings from Level K on Fridays (and not much of the activities (art/science) since you would be doing some with Level 1. Another option would be to do Level K and try out doubling the weeks up for a month to begin with and see how that goes and then starting Level 1 once you finish. Truthfully, though, if I were in your position, I would just do Level K this year (since math and english can be a higher level if needed) and add more books / science as needed. Then just move on to Level 1 whenever you finish K. There are no firm "rules" on how long or when you have to start/finish a curriculum; my girls love the books so much that we will often keep reading into the summer with the series, etc. if your goal is to have her aligned with Level 2 for 2nd grade next year.
