Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at another live performance of Tori Amos and her song CRUCIFY live. Tori does more than just slay vocals, she's playing two pianos! See how much lift this song has and the catchiness appeal. I'm all in!

She is truly a once in a millennium artist. She’s amazing in every sense. I’ve seen her live twice but been obsessed since the early 2000s. I’d love to hear you react to Riot Proof (Live). Jesus it’s so energetic and packed with amazing vocals. Her voice has changed throughout the years, and her early years are raw and in your face, and these years are more relaxed and focused, and her newer stuff is more fine-wine tasting. Haha. I love her so much.

I'm a jazz guy, real jazz--Coltrane, Miles, Mingus, Monk, Roland Kirk...but I absolutely love Tori. When she performs I find myself melting. The combination of her vocal phrasings, the piano, her complete dissolution into the performance. I have never been seduced in quite the same way as by a live Tori performance, and she does time and time again.
@sethleon2158

Maybe she has me under some kind of spell, but you can scour punk, metal, avant garde of all kinds yet and not find anything harder or more raw (while still being beautiful) than this:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-glJWeuE2M-g.html

"She spins around and then she attacks. Attacks attacks attacks." She's a Leo and she'll make it known to you that she attacks. :) She is skillful and masterful. She studied piano formally at the Peabody Preparatory from age 5, and at age 12 dropped out of that program and played in piano bars and hotels from 12 until her 20s, when she released her first album. The academic musical training plus the many years of competing to be heard among conversations in bars and hotels, not to be background music, helped to make her a master of music technically and performatively. She's the kind of extraordinary live musician who is spoken of by people who criticize the instant-starmaking machine of the music industry today. Many younger artists are very talented, but when they go straight from RU-vid to the stage without music education and without years of live experience with audiences, most just can't captivate live the way musicians like Tori Amos can. It's probably also significant to her ability that her grandfather imparted in her an Eastern Cherokee worldview that is uncommon among most of us. She believes that the land and all things and all people are alive and interconnected, and that comes into play with her songwriting and with her performance. She always speaks of performances as "holding a space" for the music, to honor each song as a living entity and to give it her full attention while she is serving as its human conduit. She speaks of her performances to her audiences as offerings, as a gift that she is sharing with the people who listen, in conversation with her audience. She's grateful that people make an effort to listen to her, and she never refers to people as "my fans" or "the fans." Throughout her career, she has almost always arrived early at her live venues to meet and speak with people who come to see her, and she usually adjusts her set lists in part according to what she discusses with people on that day, and often according to what is going on in her life or in the greater world. So she doesn't just recite the music that she recorded in a studio and she doesn't try to make it sound as close to the album version as possible; she's always reinterpreting her music, adjusting it compositionally and vocally and sometimes lyrically, and everything she performs has meaning every time. All this might sound a little over the top to some people reading it, but these are reasons why her live performances are something other than typical pop music performances. She is an artist who never just goes through the motions and who doesn't perform to sell her music as a product. She's always engaged in two-way conversation whether she is speaking with others, creating music with keyboards or performing to the muses (She insistently believes in muses as inspirational entities with whom she co-creates.) or to large audiences of people who have come to hear her.

I have seen her so many times live and she never fails to reinvigorate or reinvent a song. An incredible artist and musician.. Love her.. She uses her voice as an instrument in the same way as she does the piano.. To charm, disarm, discord, provoke, soothe, stoke... she is a very sensual performer... Elemental.. Haha.. I like that.. The original studio version of this is amazing.. But live she's on another level.. Precious things is incredible live.. Icicle is amazing on the piano.. She has so many good albums... Scarlets Walk is one of my favourites.. But little earthquakes is the album that started it all xxbrilliant....keep exploring her work

DUDE - I love a guy who reacts like this to Tori, she's utterly magnificent, and you're lit! xx I joined the Tori crowd in 1996 w Boys for Pele at a time of enormous spiritual suffering and she was a guiding light through that time, alongside the tons of poetry and harpsichord playing I continue to do. I definitely need to see her live too, she's incredible! Big hugs, Dereck, and kindest greetings from Australia xx

This is very different from the studio version on Little Earthquakes, and that's what makes her so great. She changes up her back catalog a lot when she's live, depending on whether she has the full band or not. I have at least 35 or 40 recordings of her live performances, and they all have things that set them apart, even on the same tour.

yes, yes, yes....go down this rabbit hole, records Under the Pink, Little Earthquakes, Boys for Pele.......alll so awesome....I was priveleged to see her perform twice in concert....she literally held the audience entranced. I like her originals much more than her covers, though. "Not the Red Baron", "Mr. Zebra", and my favorite "Donut hole"...absolutely marvelous.... also "Happy Spirits" and "All the pretty horses"........oh la.....I could just go on and on....she was a child prodigy on piano, tried to do pop with a group in early 80's that did not do well, then she did her own thing and she just shined and continues to do so. She is one with her piano, just watch her move and sing...incredible. So glad you did this reaction. This version is slower than the album/studio version, but just as incredible. She makes every performance unique.

I'm so glad to see younger people appreciate the past. It is so rare to see young people behold the real musicians and poetry writers that Gen X was exposed to and why we appear to be unimpressed with much of the music now - it's because we witnessed the zenith of the artistic balance between art and technology.

I'm an arguably new fan (first listened to her in 2015) and got to see her live in 2017. Just to be clear, I love, love her music, I think she's an absolutely brilliant musician, singer and songwriter, but unfortunately one cannot deny her live performances now just aren't what they used to be. If you're going to see her live, just don't get your expectations too high. The experience was worth it, but it really had me wishing I had discovered her earlier. The way I see it, her last truly kickass performances took place circa 2009 when she released Abnormally Attracted to Sin. The night I went to see her, about half of the setlist was her playing over a backing track, which just sounded cheap and kinda ruined the natural flow of her performances. The rest was mostly pure Tori, with some really interesting arrangements at times. But her voice is definitely much weaker now, which is to be expected I guess. She's switched to using her head voice much more ever since 2005 (which I believe is due to a problem with her jaw?) and I feel like that would be pretty hard on anyone's vocal cords.

Seeing her live is never the same thing twice. I've heard so many versions of some of the same songs from her, like there are a few I would say I've heard/seen at least 6 different versions between the studio, full band, her and just one accompanist (sometimes just her and drums, sometimes just her and the bassist), just her and the piano, up tempo from the original, slowed down from the original, just off the top of my head. Even on the same tour each set list is different. I saw her in Toronto do two concerts on the same day, and there were several changes in the set list just between those two shows. Can't over recommend going to see her live, truly one of the best.

Hi Derek, I was watching your reactions on several Tori Amos performances and songs. It’s quite hard to figure out, what is more fascinating, on one hand your comments and reactions on Tori or Tori herself. I think its quite equal. I have to admit proudly, that I am a fan of Tori Amos since the early nineties, me being a teenager, trying to be different and listening to a extraordinarily different artist/musician for that time. Tori has accompanied me throughout the years with her progression and her several and different songs. I have to add, that I have been to different concerts of Tori Amos, and every single gig was different from the previous one. The senilste were different from gig to gig and finally the performance of the specific songs are always different. To me personally it is a progress, as it indicates that Tori Amos is a true artist and always in progress to optimize her performance. Honestly, she nails it all the time in different ways. As i can figure out, that you are fascinated by her the same way I have been all through this 30 years, you should definitely attend one of her gigs or maybe more, to confirm my observations. Furthermore, you should go for a live interview with Tori and ask her all your questions. As I enjoy your reactions on her, you should go for some songs to react on comparing to the studio recordings. Try out Siren , live and studio Space dog live and studio Christmas in space (purple people) live and studio And las but not least Precious things. I can’t wait to see this online Best regards from good old Germany Mirnes

She's a Queen, among others. In the 90s I was blessed to get to listen to Tori Amos, Björk, PJ Harvey, Heather Nova... What do we got nowadays ? Billie Eillish, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Dua Lipa ? C'mon! OK, we got MARINA so there's still hope...

Your enthusiasm is how I still feel about her live performances, even after watching them over and over again the past 20+ years. I think you'd love the live version of Sugar with Matt & Jon. Matt's drumming in particular is transformative. It's a b-side, but one of her favorites and one of her very best songs. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1leYW81u6DI.html So, they censored her saying "you're just a pussy" in that video. 🤣 The audio from the live CD (second disc included with her album To Venus & Back) is widely regarded as the best and doesn't censor that part: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZMRF7b915o4.html

Little earthquakes was her first album and it's definitely one of the best albums of all time and I mean out of all albums ever made not just her music but out of all artists.

The true piano goddess!!! Seen her 3 times and always floored with her live. Missed her by 5 minutes before the show at one of them. It was a meet and greet. Tried to convince the security to just for her to just say a quick hi to me. But nope. This was in Massachusetts.

Please, please, please react to Dead Can Dance! If you like Tori's voice you will die hearing Lisa Gerard's voice. She also does movie soundtracks like Gladiator and others. Please listen to Dead Can Dance! Anything from the album A Passage In Time is awesome, especially the song Spirit!

She has been my woman crush since I first heard Silent All These Years off of Little Earthquakes my senior year in high school 1992. I love her. She's amazing live. Her soul is as beautiful as she is in the outside. She's a goddess. She was a legit child prodigy. This deserves a sub.

"Me and a Gun" is her truely Epic song! And yes you have to see her live! Saw her at Penn State a few years ago and only Tool is the better concert I've seen.

I have a Tori Amos idea for you: you should react to her music video "Spark". It starts off her "From the Choirgirl Hotel" album. Also, her live Las Vegas version of "Blood Roses" is pretty fire.

Can you please do a reaction video to Precious things live off of To Venus and Back CD 2? I think you would absolutely love it! It really shows more of her ability to blow it out of the water during her live performances and the song has incredible lyrics! You won’t regret doing it I promise you! I’m a lifelong Toriphile (ears with feet is what she calls her fans) and you can’t go wrong with this song!

“Little Earthquakes” (the album) was actually rejected by the recording company. They wanted to replace the piano with all guitar. Imagine that.

I was so lucky to see her in concert in 96/97. She did not perform this song :( I bought a "Bootleg" CD or her live performances shortly after and when performing this song she stopped midway and said "Oh F*&% I forgot the words" LOL Check out Precious Things live (it was my favorite live) ....on another note PLEASE check out Sarah McLachlan live. I saw her in 2014 and her voice was still stellar! Both have similar vibes.
