@cassl14 God, no. Pam Anderson wishes she was Tori. Seriously, Tori Amos is an amazingly engaging performer. I'm sorry you don't get what she does in concert. Maybe if you went to a show and experienced it from start to finish?.. Her eyes would find you at some point and she would notice you. She's a great one for actually seeing her audience.
Tori knows what she's about. I saw her live back in September of 1992 during the Little Earthquakes tour. It was a smallish venue and I was in the fifth or sixth row, right side, pretty close to Tori and her piano. She sat just like she's sitting in this video, legs askew, and her eyes constantly scanned the crowd. (She met my eyes several times, but as she was under hot lights and most of the crowd was in the dark I'm not sure how well she actually saw any of us. But she tried.) As a performer she wasn't what I was expecting at all. Given her vulnerable lyrics and that aching soprano I thought she'd come off as shy and distant, even damaged. Anything but! She was warm and supremely confident, without a hint of stage fright. Her stage patter was bold and amusing...I remember her telling us a funny story about a sexual awakening she had while looking at a poster of Jim Morrison when she was young. Her performance was flawless, too. She didn't sing a single note off key.
@@ziweiyuan I saw Tori in Phoenix in 2018 at the stupid Comerica theater. I was up in the nosebleed balcony section and I know she saw me and my buddy, Star. She even pointed right at us when she sang "Running Up That Hill". Probably because I am an old-school Kate Bush fan and I sorta popped a vocal cord when I recognized the first notes. It was an amazing show and to hear her cover Kate was like frosting on top of a cake made of frosting. :)
That piano sounds so 'dirty' on the lower notes... Epic cover with a unique twist to it. No matter how much I love the original, this is almost as epic. Wow...
@@jeffblydenburgh5938 and I disagree deeply and profoundly with your disagree. the vocals on the original simply do not agree with the emotion of the lyrics thenselves. S and G were just 2 nice american boys singing sweetly. the lyrics are so far removed from this. With disturbeds cover the discontinuity is resolved, the vocals are now true to the lyrics. it has to be one of the finest covers ever, of any song
@@jukeseyable The dissonance between the sweet, simple singing in the original is perfect for the lyrics. Life is dissonant. We are tone deaf to the suffering of others and cannot and will not bear witness to it even as we cannot come to terms with our own. Cries for help are met with silence. Consonance is all we're trained to hear and to respond to. I love both the original and the cover. Each performance has its own depth of message.
When I was pregnant with my one and only child, I listened to Tori and Leonard Cohen every day. She is 21 now and a musician now and songwriter. I made sure she learned piano, but she taught herself guitar. She graduated with a degree in philosophy and politics, and is getting her master’s in Public Policy. She wants to work for an NGO. BUT her first love is music, and she told me yesterday that she’s dedicating two days a week to practicing and writing songs. I have encouraged her to never stop playing. She said it’s her fantasy to just be able to play and write songs every day, but she is a realist. It’s her life- and I can’t blame her for wanting a “normal” career. She’s goiMy to record an ep soon and shop it around clubs in London!
This is exactly how you do a cover. The first problem with many covers is the song choice, and once facet of that problem is the risk of covering an immensely iconic song that truly "belongs" to the original artist. This scenario for covering often ends in disaster, and yet Tori aced it. The second point is general criteria for an excellent cover: a fresh, new spin, adaptation to produce the covering artist's true style, and backstory: personal connection the song and possibly even portraying a new meaning than the original has. Check, check, and check.
Richard Tyminski and you should take what's left of your brain and flush it, which isn't much since you don't have two braincells to rub together. fail troll idiot :)
Richard Tyminski Honestly, people like you are just boring. You spout your bile without recourse and we live with it, and we will, not because of decency, but because there is hope for everyone. Damn my friend, you need to get out into the world and actually live, but hey, I love you a little bit, not much, but some! Good luck kid.
Tori Amos sang and recorded that song before NIRVANA, who were not big yet, as she was starting as well, they knew each other and they gave the song to her, and it was not a hit, more a B-Side, but she did it pretty much like this piano and voice, then Nirvana made it a grunge hit....
I remember hearing Tori sing this at Her Majesty's Theatre, the day after Kurt took his life. You could have heard a pin drop whilst she sang. Truly beautiful.
This is exactly how you make a cover of a highly successful song just one year after. By doing it totally different. I remember first time hearing Amos' version and just laughed out load. So briliiant doing a piano based ballad of that loud rock song (which great riffs I instantly loved to play on guitar my self). Tori Amos is such a great musician, and God bless her heart.
This is when I was totally in love and obsessed with her. Looking at it now I still see one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. It was of course her voice that mesmerised me as a teen but these performances, what a woman.
I like her cover. It's artistic. One thing I really like about Tori is that she gets comfortable in front of people, and it makes her songs really deep in feeling.
this is an amazing example of a perfect cover, unique in a sense that it’s not literally karaoke, but still respecting the original source material for what it was. absolutely beautiful.
Everybody who says she's butchering the music honestly must not understand musical theory whatsoever. It's haunting and beautiful. The way she crescendos or moves from piano to fortissimo in an instant is fucking gorgeous.
I think there are people who say that because they don't like her for other reasons. Allegedly she's a Satanist and other things, etc. I think it's safe to say, though that whatever you think of Tori's character, she is an amazing performer.
@@cmcgrew98 probably not a 'satanist',whatever that might actually be. outspoken, though, i think. some folks have trouble with semi-famous people speaking out-of-turn, especially if they disagree with them...
@@shnootch I think in this case, it has to do with some shallow Christians attempting to label people like Tori as Satanists, because people like her criticize Christianity. My response to that is that it's important to have things out in the open and not to lie in fear of such people like Tori even if they are "Satanists". It is true that Tori is talented, and the best thing to do is to debate certain issues rather than cowering in fear and downgrading one's obvious musical talent. I have a pretty serious problem with shallow Christians myself having grown up with and around them. Christians who don't like Halloween, for example. I know of one family who won't let their son watch a single movie, not even a Christian one, because reasons. I really think this is a serious issue in the Christian community, and I certainly don't think that it really helps their case to remain ignorant and shallow in such ridiculous ways.
@@cmcgrew98 I myself drifted out of the church because of this pervasive shallowness. Just take note of who american evangelicals have embraced as their emmissary of truth on earth...
I totally agree. Used to get funny looks from the record shop staff, when I'd buy a Bolt Thrower, Sabbat, Napalm Death etc epic and something by Tori at the same time. Love the energy and oh so subtle intensity from this lady. Her themes are so brutal too. Check out "Time does not heal" by Dark Angel. Two beautiful peas in a very disturbing pod.
Somewhere out there, is a guy (or a girl, who knows) who adamantly claims that Tori Amos locked eyes with them in a concert and nobody believes them :-P
Yes! And this version is so great because she still has so much of the emotion, but just in a different way. Some people probably wouldn't agree, but her cover is better than the original.
@@StanleyKubick1 just because you don't like it doesn't mean no one else should. putting a spin on a song shouldn't be a reason to invalidate real talent. Don't write people off as being idiots just because you have differing opinions over something as insignificant as a cover of a song
Her piano skills and in particular her rearrangement for this song is what I find the most incredible as the original version is not really explicit about the "colour" of the chords (guitar and bass only play fundalental + fifth) And damn it's freaking sexy ! Anyway, love it ! :D
Pianists ive known have always said "oh thats odd" but never elaborated. Thanks for saying whats so different about her composition. Sorry for this being years late
I heard that new version of this song and I needed to hear Tori instead. She really rocks those low 🎹. I remember playing it in piano class and my teacher was like what are u playing. I was impressed she recognized it.
Watching this performance is like getting lost in a strange nook of the city but enjoying every twist and turn of it. She's wild and intriguing without trying. She doesn't just sing; she speaks to you in melody and mean each and every line, and THAT IS SEXY.
There is not another living soul who can make a piano sound so haunting. I remember hearing a snippet from Little Earthquakes prior to it's release in a WEA marketing meeting and I was just floored. I grabbed a Pre-release cassette copy of the record and to this day it still sits in a safe as a prized treasure. The first time I saw her perform on the Little Earthquakes tour was one of the most moving experiences of my life. I walked away speechless. There were simply no words to describe what I had just witnessed. Just Tori and a Piano onstage and she managed to reach into the imaginations of the audience and conjure up a show within the mind of each viewer. It was absolutely magical.
This makes me sad and grateful at the same time. Sad because no one is making music anymore and I was grateful I was a budding teenager when I found Tori and that I can pass her music down to my daughter.
I remember the single for Crucify when it came out and when I looked at the track listing saw Teen Spirit. I skipped the cd to that track and I was just sent to another place and time with this cover. It was sublime. She is something else.
The greatest difference of this cover when compared to the great original version, was the effect the lyrics had on me. Although I am a huge fan of the original version, I have to say that super Tori has done a great job reflecting the meaning of the lyrics with her voice. Excellent!
It's cool to hear what a Hard Rocking song sounds like when it's mellowed out and played on piano. I'ts like it changes your perspective on how you think about the song as well.
I love her voice and her interpretation here and her own songwriting of course, but what I do like the most about her is her unique style of piano playing. I just adore her almost always dark tone-style on the board.
Always admired Tori's music ability, as a 90's grunge fan I totally missed this until lockdown 2021! So 2021 and sat in front of my PC (that's what us 40 somethings still do) drinking some beers and enjoying the music. You can tell she's totally in-tune with the song, accent raises and lowers with how she feels the song needs to be told. Love it!
Really impressive. Love when a song is covered in such a new and radical way. She nails it. There's just enough of the original song still in there. Beautiful.
Interesting because when I saw Nirvana in Seattle in 1992 they started playing the Tori Amos version over the speakers, then Kurt cut it off and said “Yeah right”. I remember being really disappointed cuz I love Tori.
Tori is one of those performers who can truly make the sound of the piano and her voice keep you hanging on each word and note , haunting and beautiful 🙏 she is amazing and love to hear her cover these classic songs.
About the same experience as the White Stripes doing Dolly Partons' 'Jolene', but then the other way around. Fascinating, how some can really add other layers to a song by covering it.
This is what separates Tori from all other singer's...how she looks at every single person in the audience and makes them feel special or she is singing to them...she always did!!
apparently she has synesthesia, it's a disorder where the brain can visualize music in the form of hallucinatory light waves, it often produces genius level musicians. :)
Unbelievably creative, talented, original, mesmerizing, beautiful, haunting, emotional and brilliant. Tori Amos is one of the best singers and musicians in history, this is one of the greatest cover songs of all time, and Tori is simply one of the most beautiful women on this planet. Thank you, Tori. We all love you!
How can anyone be there live and not be captured by this performance. I feel uneasy watching through a screen, as if she’s actively trying to steal my soul. Yet it’s so beautiful and I can’t look away. What a an enchanting woman she is.
I had the chance to meet you at Jacobs recording studios in Farnham with my friend Rachel, when I was 15.... Unfortunately I bailed because I was too shy.. One of my biggest regrets 😔
She used to do that for the first three albums' tours. Excellent performer. Those were incredible concerts. Felt like she was looking at you but she couldnt possibly at the ones i was at. Just physics.
Now I understand that Bob's Burgers episode with the food trucks...the red-headed songstress grinding lasciviously on her piano chair, breathing heavily. Spot-the-fuck-on!!!
In 1992, Tori released a little EP called Crucify. It had 5 tracks on it including 3 covers: Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana) Thank you (Led Zeppelin) and Angie (Rolling Stones). The covers are all insanely brilliant and complement Crucify and Winter wonderfully. I'm really fond of her version of Angie.
