For anyone interest, Maple Flag is held annually. Maple Flag was held twice a year from 1978 till 1987.

Amazing to me that the Sea Harrier FRS2 (FA2)/Blue Vixen combo was using AMRAAM with mid-course updates to shoot down drones during flight tests in 1993, and yet a decade later the RAF still couldn't do that with its premier interceptor!

The F3 is one of the most underrated fast jets ever ! It was designed as an interceptor and it would have done a belter job doing that but it was thrust into being a turning and burning fighter that it was ever designed to be ! The crews and then the AMRAAM and ASRAAM and Link 16 made it a very capable jet which Walter mittys slag off because they don’t understand it ! this coming from the someone who worked on GR1 and GR4 mudmovers ! is a mega recommendation 😂😂

The later versions were definitely capable, as Roy outlined above. I wonder if the F-15s boldness ever bit them with Red Air working that out. Still, hard to face a wall of Eagles in anything that isn't 5th Gen! Great interview.

The main problem with the Tornado F.3 wasn't performance as much as the cost and the amount of time it took to get it into service. They were probably assuming that it wouldn't cost much more than the Tornado GR.1 when they decided to develop the ADV and it was supposed to enter initial service by about 1982.

I never liked the F3. Loved the GR4.

Why? They both had their uses and did it pretty well.

@@Scotscan The F3 had a long ugly nose and the radar did not work, they flew much the same too for a fat old lady, Then I flew the AV8 and never looked back.
