This is a lightening strike. Old farm woman here. I've seen this many times.

Looks more like a lightening strike 🤷🏼‍♀️. Or could be a micro burst. We had a micro burst hit a tree in our yard which splintered and the shattered tree took out the garage and a car. No other damage on the street to any other houses or trees. It’s amazing that a single burst of wind can create such a massive isolated event.

If it was lightening the tree will soon begin to die. When the lightening strikes a tree it literally blows up where the strike hits. Would be other damage if it was a tornado.

I also believe it was lightning. I was standing looking out the kitchen window while washing the dishes when lightning hit a tree in the dog lot. One of the dogs was thrown 100 ft, over 3/4 of the tree became 20 plus pound shrapnel. Which punched holes into the side of my home and knock out windows. Four surrounding trees later died.

@Andrew It depends on the moisture content of the tree how much damage a lightning strike causes. I have seen some barely damaged if there hasn't been recent rain and I have seen trees bigger than this tree shattered with pieces blown close to 100 yards aways through heavy forestation after 4 days of continuous rain.

I would lean more toward a lightning strike the way it all exploded and it was only that lone tree in the area. A tornado typically is on the ground for some period of time and has a clear path of travel and destruction. Just my humble opinion.

The destruction looks far too pinpoint accurate to be a tornado touch down or even high winds, it would have caused much more damage to surrounding trees, especially in an area as densely planted with trees as that. If I had to guess, it was probably struck by lightning. That kind of limb damage is consistent with others I've seen, particularly with the vertical split line going down the trunk of the affected limb and what looks like black charred remnants of bark in the affect parts.

@tanyabailey2784
@tanyabailey2784 Год назад
Yes that was definitely a lightning strike. Have had several on my property. Sometimes they explode just like that and sometimes not, just the crack in the tree with the bark missing. Like was on your tree trunk that was still standing. Lighting does not always scorch the wood either.

Fellow Aussie here, we’ve had plenty of lightening strikes on our property & the neighbours had a tree struck near their bore pump which blew the tree apart, surged the pump and power point then it travelled up to the main switch board on the house about an 200 meters away & blew the breakers out, it was CRAZY and we heard it from out place about 800 meters away

I wonder too if it could’ve been lightning. What you might need to do is get someone in there to look at that because they do want to record all the tornadoes that touchdown. So you should stop touching everything and find out if it was straight line, winds, a tornado or lightning. Have a great day. Sending love from Wisconsin.

A lightning strike would cause that kind of damage. There could have been a piece on metal or moisture pocket in the tree that when hit by lightning, could cause the tree to explode like that. And the only charring would be at the point of impact and exit. Check the lightning strike weather reports. they record almost all activity in your area.

This looks like a lightning strike and not a tornado. There is no twisting of wood, but there are "clean cuts." As you said, it looked as though it had been cut by a saw. I'm certainly no meteorologist or tree specialist, but I have seen many a tree in my life that has been struck or been near a lightning strike, and that is what this looks like to me. I would love to hear what it was definitively if you ever find out. Either way, I am grateful your family is safe and no one else was harmed. I am sad, though, for the old man tree who has seen more of life than you and me put together. 🌳 GOD bless. Peace.

It doesn't look like from a tornado but super high winds. If tornado the trees would have twisted branch damage rather than looking so clean like a saw cut it. I took extensive tornado training in school as well as otherwise and have met with professionals after our town got hit. They were also explaining the same stuff to those wondering about it when they came to do the storm damage investigation for rating. Super high winds like from a downburst can do that without it being a tornado.

Back in my construction days, I was working late running a large loader for a pipe contractor. I was waiting for a delivery in a old 74 Chysler Newport, land yacht, when a super thunderstorm started brewing. Summer in Fl can be wild. In a few minutes, the sky went dark, and it sounded like a train coming. Then, the front of that old Chysler began to lift up. Just as it was about 2 feet off the ground, and I thought it was going to flip me, it stopped, and the front of the car hit the ground. But then I heard that train sound again. This time, I watched a 20ft semi trailer loaded just tools lift straight up about 3ft, then fall to its side and then be pushed right through the fence. Some thought I was seeing things. But when we looked at the fence posts, they were bend high up. Which meant that trailer was in the air when it went through the fence. God showed me his power that night. 👍🙏👍
