Yea being in a 200 ton block of metal is generally the best place to be in any situation like that. Another reason trains are the superior mode of transport.
I work for the railroad. They always told us that if a tornado shows up. Don’t go inside a building, go inside a locomotive and lock the door. Those things are stronger than a tank. I’m surprised the side window broke. The front windows are bulletproof. They are about five layers thick. I literally seen rife rounds stuck in them.
My son-in-law is an engineer. He always told me the safest place to be in a tornado would be a train engine or cab or whatever you call it. He was right.
@@heywoodfloyd9I think you still survive even the worst tornado. The locomotive might get pushed over but it isn’t going to be picked up and thrown. It’s just too heavy.
At that moment he realized it was the only option. At that point you can either scream and cry or take it like a man and hope for the best. But yes he definitely handled it better than most.
Yes, but they calmly ducked down for a tornado but would be jumping their railroading behinds out into the rocks and running if another train was coming.
I don't understand how callous people have to be to see the freak of nature that is a tornado, known for killing, injuring, and violently uprooting the lives of so many and walk away from the experience focused on the fact that they hear women screaming and crying and see it as solidification of their misogyny. Never mind when the video people comment under tends to show their now destroyed house and/or neighbourhood. I feel like this is a nice tornado video simply because these guys were in the right place at the right time (in a 500 ton literally bulletproof freakin' vessel) whilst watching a relatively weak tornado. I like how you can observe it almost like an animal at the zoo at first.
Awesome footage, as a welder Carmen mechanic years ago for the railroad its a good thing those engines weigh around three hundred fifty thousand pounds ....
The engine by itself weighs 432,000 pounds, I’m an engineer for Csx railroad. The windows have FRA Part 223 bullet proof glazing on them but the metal below the windows isn’t very thick, they’re lucky nothing came through those places.
200 tons of steel protecting you and keeping you on the ground. Probably one of the best locations to be during a tornado. The light rail cars were probably not in good shape.
i wouldnt say "little" cover, cause the windows on the locos are bullet proof and the cabs are built to withstand head on collisions with other locos at 30 mph ( im pretty sure thats the speed its rated to)
You guys gave us more Insights into how these powerful storms affect so much of the world on their paths. Sooooo glad you guys are all safe afterwards. ❤
I really wish those guys in dominator were as calm as you. Thank you for being reasonable. The storm chaser guys just scream and sound panicked all the time. I appreciate your calm and peace of mind.
I love Reed Timmer and Team Dominator..the Yelling is of course not for some but I love his Compassion of Storm Chasing and making it exciting after Driving for Hundreds and Hundreds of Miles even with the Modern Technology to capture a Tornado..I mean it's the Thrill of the moment and to encounter what one was out searching for I feel his Adrenaline being released!! But as we know that there are Several Stormchasers and we have the Choice to pick which Chasers we tune into!
I agree, but those storm chasers aren’t as safe as being inside of this 200 ton steel block that will not be moved. It’s literally probably the safest place to view a tornado, hence them not screaming like little boys.
Well obviously that's the only thing you can do is just remain calm and accept your faith. Screaming whinning yelling causing a drama won't get you far and won't bring the Man from the heavens down to this piece of rock just to save you from the screaming you're causing and the whinning and the crying. You're not important to be causing drama and cry cause you ain't ready to die. At least these engineers showed you what bravery really is. Not to mention their pretty wise and honestly humble unlike you and the rest of your followers I'm sure you're the one who starts to cry and starts to pray etc etc etc
@HighBall-wt8jp you can use your phone when operations are ceased and the crew all agrees on it. They were probably in a high wind/weather advisory and stopped already.
Seriously? These guy's were in a 200+ton locomotive that can withstand all but maybe the most powerful tornadoes. Their basically in a tank on steroids. A storm chaser is in a 2-3 ton car/truck. HUGE difference in danger level genius.
@@bradleyd6000 Had if these storm chasers ride on rails it would have been a lot safer, although there's not much freedom of movement versus the unpredictable movement of the twisters (except they had to rely on doppler radar)
I just had my first panic attack and I’m in NY, But these guys r really chill about the whole thing. Trever is playing a game of state the obvious and the other guy who thanked Trever for playing is just “ hold on “ “ man it knocked the car over.” Lol, meanwhile I’m having a NY panic attack and I’m in NY! I would have been crying like a little girl.
Being so heavy an object, I've always wondered what train crews do in tornadoes in that part of the country. Stay put. Try to out run it. Glad you guys are safe and glad I got my question answered.
Hi 👋! Your comment are always worth reading..I pray to God to give you a lot of beautiful days and you know God loves us so much!.....So where are you originally from? I am David originally from Spain but currently living in Texas now........
It looks like it wasn't as bad as an F5 so I suspect and hope everyone was OK. Very nice of you to be concerned. I feel the same when I hear about quakes. I'm from Riverside. Have a good week. :)
This happened near Waverly,Nebraska.Onevof my daughter's truck drivers was stranded there and saw it.He was ok and made it to Omaha, where he was headed back too.
I believe this is the same tornado that went through Harlan it might be deemed an E5 if the damage lines up everything else does. One person has so far died from injuries
@@jamesmelton4412 can just the wind tip a diesel engine over? Or was there a box or stack or gondola behind it.? That had to be a very interesting job. Depressing but you probably have some very interesting pictures. My Dad investigated wreckage sites. During the Korean War. I tried for automobiles accidents. But couldn’t get past the math. I was probably adopted 😂🤣
In 2021, December, near where I live a tornado derailed a train easily off the rails, and this was one of those heavy cargo trains with the blue engines compartments, never underestimate a tornado
No But You can catch Toto all over in Wamego, Kansas! And see the rest of the crew at The Oz Museum right in that town! It's a total must.. Okay, srry bout that, just thought I would multi-task & Nerd out all at the same time! 😊😂😂😂 Hv A Great Day Everyone! 😊

Eh. It is a gamble. Tornadoes have been known to topple over engines. Just those moments are around an ED4 to EF5+. This one. I think it hit about a 2 or 3. Vicious, but when you are in a rolling bunker. You are pretty safe.
I'd feel safer if the metal surrounding the windshields was as strong as the windshields themselves. Also it's 200 tons, not 500; a really big tornado will have its way with it.

Dude I think one of the Ryan hall yall storm chasers saw your car tipped over. He said something about it on the live feed when he was checking out thr damage
Locomotive engines are roughly 400,000 pounds. It was fine. The glass is bulletproof and has a glaze on it. It can break but won't shatter. The cars... not so much
Reed Timmer would be screaming at the top of his lungs "ease up" turn around" "move in" "we're in the tornado" " look at the debris" "back up" "we gotta go" lmao
There are cars right across the highway from that train that were tossed out in the field like toys, and a factory building destroyed. That train lost at least 10 cars.
I was born and raised my whole life in Iowa. I've been very close to three tornadoes in my 60 years. It's more fun than scary. If you're not an idiot you can figure out when you should duck and cover and when you can watch and drink beer. People in the Midwest like to sell this like it's super scary dangerous to everybody that didn't grow up with them. They're nothing. I'd be more scared to stand in an open field in a lightning storm than I would ever be afraid of a tornado. Don't let them fool you, It's not a big deal and I've seen some pretty good stuff In my years.
From Iowa and been in the direct path of two tornados (Grinnell & Delta) and of the edges of probably 50 more over the last 70 yrs... Tornadoes are an awesome display of the power and unpredictable nature of the weather in Iowa...
Yeah, I have lived my entire life on the East Coast, and we're all like, oh, another hurricane, no biggie! And we sit on the porch and drink whatever. It is kind of fun. I worked with a gal who lived for hurricane season! 😊
@@debbiebasche5337 I'm not much younger than you and likewise have lived my entire life here and somehow I've only been really close to about two or three tornadoes in my nearly 60 years and you're telling me you've been really close to about 50? Somebody's full of shit here and it's not me.
