What causes a Tornado to form? How can we foresee them? New technologies are giving people more and more time to prepare and seek shelter in a time of crisis, whether it be from information gathered on the ground or spectacular visual mapping from new satellites in space. Engineer and storm chaser Tim Samaras gives his unique perspective and insight on the situation.

When a video first comes out, if it has an inordinate number of views all at once, the counter stops updating visually after 301 until the traffic dies down. The reason for this is that the views are coming in so fast that to query the number of views it every view would actually overload and slow down the servers.

we need more scientist that think like this, not ones that think like hondac55.. as another nod to you asking a very fundemental and very honest, and well thought question. Please keep asking these type of questions and try to find answers to them in our known world and understanding of physics and physical properties. People like you will hopefully and probably make this world have a brighter future. Some people suggest using tornado power, if you will the effects that create tornadoes normally

makes me wonder if the tornado states should look into wind power. It'd be incredibly cost effective for them and reduce the probability of tornadoes, and therefore reduce damage costs.

as a nod to you sir and your idea, this is currently in development. Its currently been shown in lab scaled down versions of tornadoes that dry ice and water will drastically hinder a tornadoes ability to move through that area that is surrounded by dry ice and water combination, it lowers ground temperature, and by doing so weakens the tornadoes ability to move through the area. Also weather machines could do, and have been physically hypothetically capable of perform similar feats.

i think the best solution is to just build homes a bit differently. its so ridiculous that they build weak cheap wooden homes without basements that any tornado can easily destroy in areas where tornados are common, and when a tornado rips it apart they build the same cheap wooden craphomes again. It would be expected that people adapt after centuries of storms, like it is in Germany: Strict building codes, and preferred building materials are brick, stone, and steel concrete.

And could tornado's be triangulated using radio Interferometry in real time, a new use for old AM towers?
@bobnsand
@bobnsand 10 лет назад
I remember listening to my car AM radio (off station) when a local tornado outbreak happened, the static was continuous. It sounded more like a hiss (coronal discharge), than occasional crackling ...coincidence? Can we detect them this way?
@iainclark8695
@iainclark8695 9 лет назад
I'm not 100% sure, but I think the radio interference is from lightening and static charge within the storm, not the tornado. I don't see how wind could pump out radio waves.
@bobnsand
@bobnsand 9 лет назад
Iain Clark Your correct, it's not simply the wind. I'm not 100% sure either. but I suspect it's a distinct electrical discharge characteristic of tornadic supercells
@iainclark8695
@iainclark8695 9 лет назад
Robert Arsenault Ok I'm catching your meaning now. A rapidly revolving, charged cloud could look different from a charged cloud. With a stronger signal at the center of rotation
@jamesedwards6589
@jamesedwards6589 7 лет назад
Robert Arsenault it's not the tornado it is the huge amount of static in the supercell
@SultanMapping
@SultanMapping 6 лет назад
Its most likely not tornadoes but actually lightning. Thunderstorms can cause static noise, while lighting will create a cracking sound in the radio.
@faithm.173

one thing ive noticed in my amateur storm chase endevours is where there is lightning, there is hail. where there is hail, theres an updraft. where theres an up draft, i look on my radarscope in velocity mode looking for any sign of rotations, then i drive to it lol ive been told lightning only happens in storms that have ice crystals in them, hense the hail. i always looks for storms with hail in them and catcg a few with wall clouds as they rotate faster. the thing is, why do storms rotate? what makes one storm rotate and the one next to it not rotate? sure, wind shear contributes but does an updraft contribute as well? i think of it like a bottle of water, flip it and it gurgles empty. flip it and whirl it a couple times and turns into a whirlpool like tornado in a bottle. this man died trying to find out more for science. many more will come to find the answers this man died looking for. someday we will know all that needs to be known. sacrifices will be made, but answers will come forward

no i am not talking about changing the direction of tornadoes.. i am saying that if we can somehow make some changes in the direction of winds coming from south near the ocean. so no tornadoes will form in the tornado alley in the first place... atleast we can try to minimize the tornadoes occurrence..!!
@onyx1186
@onyx1186 11 лет назад
by that calculation the amount of energy required to create a new jet stream, not even change the course of one is 7.5 TW - 1700 TW of energy, to change it or alter it would be much lower. Also note that the power to send a person to the moon total is 5.984*10^7 J 59840000 joule of energy not to much when considering a jet stream i suppose but that was done back in 1969... so humanity has had the power for quite some time, in fact some researchers suggest we have already altered the jets stream

as a way to create energy from heat given off of solar panels, or other things that cant readily use the heat energy that is lost when creating electricity, some of the energy lost through heat can be recaptured in a tornado simulator providing all that hot air is pooled in a containment field, if you will, that will create the vortex, and then other machines will capture the wind energy. Maybe who knows what the future really holds. I like to think positive

Following their passion: Storm chasers Tim Samaras (right), his son Paul Samaras (left) and Carl Young (second left) were killed on Friday (31 May 2013) by a tornado. All were killed one month after this video was posted.` A lot of people were killed in their vehicles that day, running from the twisters and being trapped in traffic jams, and running off broken bridges, blinded by horizontal rain.
