Huge thanks for posting this video. My 621QZR just started leaking oil in its 12th year and sure enough the hidden oil plug was loose. If not for your video I would not have know that plug was there until I completely tore down the machine - it's not even mentioned in the manual. Otherwise this machine has been rock-solid, runs great and no major servicing required just a spark plug at the 10 year mark and annual oil changes.
I had a customer who complained of an oil leak but it wasn’t easily found so I took all the covers off and discovered it. Now it gets checked on all of them that come in! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for creating this video. My Toro 721 R has been leaking oil since I bought it. Who knew there were two dipsticks? Keep making the great videos!!!
Ken, for whatever it's worth, we had some sprayer nozzles at work that we had to clean, and a tip cleaner was to big, so we took a strand of wire rope, and that did the trick. Think bike brake or shifter cable.
I have many wires for different things, I still pull strands off my brass brush to clean the pilot jet holes on Honda carbs! They seem the smallest around 10 thousandths. Thanks for watching!
Nice repair! Thanks for pointing out that hidden dip stick. wth! Mine suddenly started dripping a worrying about of oil while being used. I will tip it up and search for the (very well) hidden dip stick. Hope that solves my dilemma. :)
Update, yes mine had loosened enough to become a steady drip. Left oil drops every foot or so. Snugged it down - all is well. Thanks so much for this alert! :)
😂😂Sorry for laughing Kenny. I have some folks get perturbed that I don't take drop offs. I had a similar thing like that once, and that was enough for me. They acted like it was my fault for not getting back with them after I repaired their trimmer.
He just showed up!!!! He was out with his wife shopping and realized he had no way to contact me so he just rang my doorbell again. His name is Jim, now I know where he lives!!
If you look at the graphics in the manuals it shows the first thread which is right next to the top. If you tilt just a couple of degrees from perfectly horizontal it will give false readings so I just fill to the top when level. I Have double-checked the ounces put in and I’m usually right on the number. Thanks for watching!
Nice easy fix For you Ken. I have one question, why would you put fuel bowl on where you can easily get at the drain? Most are not engineered that way! lol. Rick
Helpful video, thanks. A little long winded though. Second hidden dipstick, how stupid is that? Girlfriend has a Toro. I had a Honda back in the day, before I sold it when it was no longer needed. I've never been impressed with Toro.
I have cards that every one fills out that gets tied to the machine , for contact info . When talking to them . I tell them about the card so that they fill it out . You can make these available to people in an old mail box or something similar .
Hey Ken, just re watched the Toro 6/22 predator swap as I'm buying one any day now. As for the "hidden dipstick, could I remove it and replace it with an end plug and just use the front dip stick?? Thanks again & keep them coming. Always a big help!!
Easier with the cover and chute removed, although I’ve reached up there with a 90 degree bent pair of needle nose pliers to tighten it also. www.autozone.com/wrenches-pliers-and-cutters/pliers/p/duralast-11in-long-nose-90-degree-pliers/914140_0_0?spps.s=4718&cmpid=LIA:US:EN:AD:NL:1000000:TLS:19489353547&CATARGETID=120054150001289977&CADevice=m&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADkcoVv1RCV3-XFcB8_jePQTQ-lys&gclsrc=ds
I thought that fuel leaked past the needle and got into the crankcase but there was no evidence of fuel so it was the old adage more is better I guess!
Great video! Quick question, am currently trying to swap engines on one of these units. Can't seem to get the bolt holding the main pulley in. Tried clamping the shaft with locking vice grips, but it just keeps spinning. The service manual just sais remove bolt to remove pulley, which i cant seem to do, Any suggestions?
Are the internal and external threads clean, no dried up Loctite on them? Have you run a thread chaser or tap down the crank hole and a die over the bolt?
I have to research a thread chaser, it's just factory installed, so probably no loctite. And not entirely sure what our mean about the nylon rope. (Not a mechanic by trade) just learn as I go when problems arise.
Question for you, ken. My machine is like new. But it appears the carburetor gasket is leaking when I store it down on its wheels. That seems odd. Could it just be a lose carburetor?
Mr Ken, I discovered the float bowl ring wasn't set properly. That caused the leak I was experiencing. I also gave the two nuts on the carburetor an extra torgue. Thanks again for your help!
Hey Ken, I have a 721 as well. The gasket for the bowl won't stay in its slot. Is there a special way it's supposed to go? I haven't sprayed cleaner or did anything else to it. I tried a bit of Vaseline to get it to stick till I could get the bowl back on. Seemed to work. I'd like to be able to take the bowl off without having to add anything. Thanks
Update: When I flipped mine fwd this year to expose the carb bowl, the gasket stayed in place. I was able to give the bowl, jet and emulsion tube a good cleaning. All went back together without a problem.
I do but it was full of other customer’s work. I love working outdoors and love the cold, it just sucks when a screw falls in the leaves or flowerbed! Thank goodness for magnets!
