Recognised as one of the founders of the Chillwave sound together with Washed Out and Neon Indian, he has on subsequent albums collaborated with artists like Flume and Tyler the Creator whilst exploring everything from house to psychedelic rock. In this one hour interview, Ryan and Chaz sit down for a chat about his new album Mahal, dive into some of the session files, talk about his journey using Reason and answer some fan Q&A. Host was clearly a huge fan and was even dropping mentions to Chillwave in 2010; I was right there with him. First loved Toro's "Minors". "Rose Quartz", "New Beat" and his remix of Tyler The Creator's "French" are also slaps.

idk about all that. he very strangely asked if MAHAL was “real instruments” or samples early in the interview. it’s a jam album. would take anyone 15 seconds to figure out that it wasn’t samples.

The amount of muted tracks was impressive! And hearing why they were muted was interesting... so much re-recording! Everyone works differently, but it's a good argument for keeping the songwriting and mixing/polishing as separate tasks. It's so tempting to get picky about that bass sound before you even finish the song... then at the end of the day, you have a nice sounding bass line on a song you're tired of listening to that doesn't have any other parts. Amazing interview - I've loved his music for a while, but had never heard him talk... glad he seems like a nice dude - makes me like the music even more!

What's so good/unique to Reason compared to other DAWs? I haven't tried using it in years and have mainly used Logic and Ableton (and a tiny bit of Bitwig which seems kind of a cross between Ableton and more traditional DAWs like Cubase/Logic). Just wondering what's good about Reason? I kind of remember it was frustrating as it didn't seem to work in the same ways as the other DAWs, but I did last use it about 8-10 years ago so I've no idea what's it like now. Can you use Kontakt and other plugins like that or are you limited to what's in Reason?

Thank you both ❤ I have dabbled with Reason but will definitely be revisiting it again after this, I really liked those iPad apps (figure) that you guys made many years ago, when i was learning computer music stuff as a young teen that and GarageBand on iPad were by far some of the most intuitive and easy to use tools to quickly put something together.

@10 minutes, a good way to divorce yourself from the bar markers in reason is to set your project at a ridiculously high BPM, but record at a normal tempo, and then arrange everything from there with snap turned off. You can still line things up, but the bar markers will be so tiny that it will help you to ignore them on the sequencer while you're moving stuff around.
@HOLLASOUNDS

15:45 So happy I'm not the only insane person. I used to play along with Reason as a backing track, then import my recorded audio into NN19. I ran into the same issue of not being able to hear the track unless I started the song over. This lead to my earliest experiments in bending Reason to my will, which gave me confidence to try other ideas. My solution was to split the audio into measures, map each up the keyboard and trigger them in sequence, which was super time-consuming but very rewarding to figure out. I think I remember that NN-XT does this automatically and I was so happy when it was added to the rack.
