Problem is that most people do not understand how little throttle is advised when driving on ice. Canada is known for cold winters, always been that way.

MODERN CAR TYRES ARE CRAP Modern Car Tyres are absolute crap when it comes to gripping in snow and ice. This is because their design stems from the likes of Formula 1 racing car tyres with a much harder rubber compound to their make-up and hardly any cross-pattern tread. They provide little to no grip in snow and ice due to the fact that they are constructed with circumferential grooves and no cross-pattern groves. This is the reason we see car wheels spinning in snow and ice and failing to grip. It beggars belief that driver tolerate this on their vehicles....especially the fact that most new cars come with these types of tyres fitted. Drivers can buy 'Winter Tyres' which have more cross-pattern grooves and are of a softer rubber compound. Even if they don't buy these there are many other tyres available which have more cross-pattern groves. Driving in snow and slush requires very little throttle and no sharp steering movement to keep the vehicle moving safely. Wheels only function properly....and brakes only work properly in straight wheel-ahead alignment in snow and slush. Failing to have the wheels in straight-ahead alignment when braking will always induce a skid. For the same reasons when driving in snow, slush or ice, one never comes to a junction or turn whilst braking. You should always brake in a straight-ahead alignment.....and then when stopped, turn the wheels in the intended direction of travel before moving off. This takes some thinking about as it is a change from the normal way of approaching a turn at a junction.....but it can be done.
