Today's video cover why Toronto needs to urgently get shovels in the ground to connect what will soon be one of Canada's densest neighbourhoods, the Waterfront East LRT. From economic, health, and environmental benefits, there are lot's of reasons to build the Waterfront East LRT, and expand transit on Toronto's waterfront. We also get insights from Reece Martin from ‪@RMTransit‬ and David Cooper from Leading Mobility on the importance of this project. This video was made in partnership with the Waterfront BIA. Thanks for watching!

Well done TT. Another great watch. I hope in the near future we get the funding to get the WELRT going. Even if its the ground portion (for now) which should be quicker to build and get in service.

Amazing videos and a great video! Yes this is a must for that area to be built with transit already there as the residential parts are added. The new residents would use transit as it'd be there right away. I'd love to meet you some day. 😀

WELRT is a much needed project that will connect this new neighbourhood with the rest of the waterfront and Union station, but in my opinion, not planning for a future Cherry station on the Ontario Line is possibly the biggest transit planning mistake Toronto has made in a long time, and the city will regret it deeply once the Portlands and Villiers island are getting built out... Here's hoping cherry will one day be the transit node it deserves to be!

@@rajastylez It doesnt have to be directly on the slope. It can be just east or west of Cherry Street, close enough to the loop via some underground pathways

@@rajastylez If they were able to build Old Mill Subway Station with half of the station over a ravine and with the very steep slope of the ravine located about the midway point of the subway station then it's hard to believe that slope should be a problem in building a new subway station. Though it is true that at Old Mill the track itself seems to be perfectly level with no slope.

Yes!!!!! Especially when the Gardiner is right next door, the waterfront REALLY needs to be as transit oriented and walkable/bikeable as possible. This should be a top priority for everyone, including non transit users and those who drive from the suburbs.

Toronto (and Ontario) needs to ratify and implement the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. Rail vehicles (includes trams, streetcars, and light rail vehicles) have the right-of-way on carriageways or roadways, if there is no separate right-of-way. That includes signalized intersections or unsignalized intersections. Some jurisdictions use reminder "YIELD TO TRAMS" signs to show who has the right-of-way.

I don’t see the connection to Union being a game breaker. I think it should be dropped IMHO given the cost it will bring. Not all trips will be to Union - shocker I know. The 5 minute indoor walk via PATH access to Union is doable for those looking to access Union. Connecting to Line 3 (ON Line) makes more sense, as described. What doesn’t get talked about is a *western* extension of the Waterfront LRT from the Exhibition. As it stands, there’s total gridlock in the west end trying to get between Bathurst & High Park area as streetcars have to share the right of way with cars: being able to have a dedicated right of way for trams would be a game changer - for King West, Liberty Village, Parkdale, and shaving time off connections to parts beyond in Etobicoke. I see the 504 and 509 cars could be routed along a new “Waterfront” right of way”. 501 cars could still run “local” along Queen Street…tho looking at a dedicated right of way is something to consider there too.
@transitthinker
@transitthinker 2 месяца назад
A connection between Exhibition and Dufferin could be done rather easily and quickly, if that was combined with dedicated lanes on Dufferin, King and Lake Shore streetcars on the western waterfront could be sped up a lot
@rebeccawinter472
@rebeccawinter472 2 месяца назад
@@transitthinker indeed. There is a lot of “underutilized” space around there, running west from Exhibition - it can create a true light rail line from downtown to Roncy/High Park (at least). If they build the East and West extensions - which shouldn’t be too too expensive - they can wait til higher levels kick up some money for renos to redo the Union access maybe and just run straight along Queens Quay in the interim. Maybe lose 10-15% of trips? Hard to say.

Streetcars are the best solution for local transit, but not very good as rapid transit
@Mystro256

Yeah I don't think that's comparable. The REM l'est was rapid transit and significantly bigger in scale than this project. This is a good example of when to use streetcars/trams, while Montreal has different needs.

Eastern waterfront is weird and scary past parliament. There is a big construction area blocking everything off, looks industrial and deserted, there is no stores, no good street lighting, etc. That construction site needs to be gone.
@transitthinker
@transitthinker 12 дней назад
That's a big reason why construction of the streetcar needs to happen now, before it's developed. The majority of construction should be wrapped up in a few years!

I would fire the whole team and higher top of the list urban planner from Europe to transform our public transit system and roads. Over 50 years they only followed poor ideas from the worst city, Houston, Los Angelos and Dallas plus others. Highways are a disaster, paying $700K for adding more traffic lights only adds more guess what, traffic. It is horrendous and loath driving in Southern Ontario. It is pathetic and not a world class in anything we do. Including our Soviet-chic architecture!

Just no. Studies have show that in North American cities people would still rather drive, as opposed to be crammed on street cars. Bicycle lanes and street car right of ways just make traffic worse and make for an even more congested city. We need more subways, not surface transport.
@transitthinker
@transitthinker 21 день назад
If you look at any major city outside of North America there are a variety of well used transit options. Most people just want to get places quickly, that's easiest by car in NA, but they would switch if other modes made sense

@@transitthinker That is the point, those places are not North America and cultural attitudes are not the same. You can't just change culture becsuse you like it. We prefer cars here and that is what should be considered.

@@philbrown102I’ve also lived in the city for a while and the mixed use transit is far nicer than wasting space on low density car lanes. It makes zero sense to make room for large, single occupancy vehicles that overall carry way less people.
