From mountains, lakes & rivers ... to prairies, deserts & wildlife (including bears) - this trip has it all!
This video is first in a 4-part series documenting our journey across Canada & the U.S. by rail in the spring of 2023.
-Here in Part 1 we are departing Toronto & travelling west aboard VIA Rail's "Canadian" to Vancouver.
-In Part 2 we explore Vancouver Island by tourist train, rental car, & ferry.
-In Part 3 we journey south from Vancouver aboard Amtrak's "Cascades" to Seattle.
-And in Part 4 we travel east from Seattle aboard Amtrak's "Empire Builder" to Chicago & "Lakeshore Limited" to Buffalo.

Once my husband and I decided to take this train in 2025, I’ve been watching several videos on the subject. When I saw that you had a 4-part series on almost the route we’re doing, I knew I had to watch all of them. I’m just on part 1 and almost decided a two hour video was too long. However, I started watching and was amazed how much more information you included in your video. So now I’m definitely watching them all. Thanks very much for the time and effort I know this took. It’s most appreciated.

Thanks for your work on this, Pete. I'm watching this in segments, and I've made it to Sioux Lookout. I appreciate all of your work adding the subtitle descriptors for landmarks, railway places and the various explanations. Cheers from Vancouver Island :)

Great video! I am amazed by the mileage the Canadian covers. It runs from coast to coast. The distance is equivalent to taking a train from NYC to Los Ángeles California

We've enjoyed the trip twice--both in February. But even a foot of snow can't mask the dreariness of Northern Ontario. Would suggest Winnipeg to Vancouver.

Thanks for the video! I'll be taking the Canadian from Edmonton to Toronto and back in November and i can't wait. It's on my bucket list - I did Vancouver to Alberta 40 years ago - time to finish the trip!

Hi, VIA's baggage policy is here: www.viarail.ca/en/plan/baggages/carry-baggage or you can call them at 1-888-842-7245. And yes you can bring your own food: www.viarail.ca/en/plan/faq/plan-your-trip/can-i-bring-my-personal-food-drinks-board You can also buy meals on board in the dining car or one of the dome cars. Hope this helps!
