Torvill and Dean receive their gold medals at the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo 1984. Footage also contains interviews from the BBC and ITV with Jayne, Chris and Betty Callaway
oh my gosh whenever i watch this i get goosebumps and a lump in my throat when our national anthem comes on it really is amazing and fills you with pride has anyone noticed as soon as the national anthem has finished jayne turns and say what looks like *thanks chris* then he kisses her neck it really is amazing they truly are the pride of britain
A great ice dance couple (Bestemianova & Bukin) as well as third placed (Marina Kimona & Ponomarenko) were so unluckly to be of the same generation as the magnificent Nottinghamshire pairing (Torvill & Dean), coached by the late great Betty Callaway. This was one of the finest images and experiences of the Sarajevo Olympics!! Bravo!
They really are awesome, so nice to watch, they still deserve the highest score nowadays
@MrEurocat I speak, for example, of Middlesbrough, Redcar and their surrounding areas - crippled by the closure of Corus which was originally British Steel and sold off to foreign investors under Thatcher's privatisation, leaving thousands vulnerable to the whim of a private investor. Instead of supporting British insustry. Not only this, but the thousands of suppliers and contractors who worked with Corus have now also lost business. The knock of effect is enormous.
"how did the performance go for you" we just got all bloody sixes how do you think it went?! would literally have been my answer, but they're actually amazing, love them!
I am a Russian and root for my the Russian skaters always but what on earth were they robbed of. Torvill/Dean did the greatest performance in ice dancing history. Bestiamanova/Bukin were good sports and they would laugh at you if you suggested they were robbed. Klimova/Ponomarenko are future legends of dance but were very young and undeveloped here and were totally gifted the bronze over Blumburg/Seibert by politks.
I am from Sheffield a northern city. The Thatcher years changed England for the better. You can forget all the rhetoric it's as simple as this, she took over from a government that took us to 25% inflation 35% basic rate of tax nationalised industries that had to be subsidised by the taxpayer and unions that ran the country. she left an economy that had steady growth, low inflation 20% basic tax rate these are the provable facts
@MrEurocat The Northern cities I speak of are definitely NOT better off. The Northern city I come from was crippled by her privatisation schemes which meant that the steel industry declined rapidly and recently went out of business altogether, putting thousands out of work. Coal and other mining industries were also privatised or shipped out to other countries, again, leaving thousands unemployed.
@fantastischfish "whim of a private investor" - ahhhhhhhh now we see the real argument. Do you think companies and businesses should be run - just for the sake of it?
@fantastischfish She gave us change - which was badly needed. Labour bankrupt us in the 70s. We had to have a bail out from the IMF - sound familiar? She basically gave evryone a kick up the arse - work, if you cant find it, move! Be responsible for yourself. And not expect to sponge off the state. The Northern cities you speak of are far better places NOW than they were then. Progress sometimes come with pain
@MrEurocat Families having to be split up because someone cannot find work? Is this the key to an improved Britain? Reducing families to even smaller units, with no extended family around to offer support? The state is there to support those in times of need: people in my area were tax payers for decades before being made unemployed as a result of Tory policies, are they 'spongers'?
Yes, apar from financially crippling the northern cities and creating the highest unemployment rate this century, she really was an astounding success....not.
i know right! tehy still think english people wear 18th century clothes and wear a glass monocle and have a pocket watch ...we are a high developed country!
The very same sporting hall 'zetra' where all this happened in 84.was destroyed and burned down 8 years later by serbian heavy artilery at the start of agresion on independent bosnian state in the spring of 1992. The world was watching again and did nothing to help that beautifull city if Sarajevo for next 4 years.Shame on all of us....
@fantastischfish If need be , yes. The family unit is much stronger than you give credit for. Instead of laying on thick, syrupy sop stories that might please a sociology lecturer deal with real life. And as for ailing industries, time moves on & doesnt stand still. We cant all be chimney sweeps & gas light attendants. Stop whining & get on with life. What cities do you speak of? You name not one!
