Hamar, NORWAY - 1994 Winter Games, Ice Dancing, Free Dance - Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean of Great Britain went back to the drawing boards and re-choreographed 80% of their Free Dance after receiving a tepid response from the audience and the judges at the European Championships weeks before. They thought by recycling some of their big flair and acrobatic moves would liven up the dance. It would be well received by the audience, but the judges would place them a disappointing 3rd in the Free Dance. That would drop them from 1st to 3rd Place overall. Many would question the result as judges would cite the fact that they used old moves as a reason to not score them higher -- lack of originality. Others would say they were too old and were unable to skate as fast as Grishuk & Platov or Usova & Zhulin of Russia. Yet, others would point out the number of rule violations in Grishuk & Platov's dance that were penalized.

Absolutely. They changed the face of ice dancing forever and never stopped challenging themselves. I recently read a comment that said that the commenter felt that Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir had surpassed and supplanted Torvill and Dean as the best ice dancers ever, and I have to disagree as strongly as it is possible to disagree! Let those two skate together as long and as consistently as Torvill and Dean have and then we'll talk about who's the best.

Phenomenal, even more than I remembered from earlier days. They have complete connection to the music and each other. There is a rhythm they have together, with the consideration Chris has for his partner Jayne really makes them unsurpassed in all of skating. It is total trust, respect, and creativity. With most skaters we are watching, with Torvill and Dean we are experiencing with them, as if they are taking us along on their journey! We too become part of the story they are creating. And their technical genius is off the charts. However Chris' respect for Jayne is unsurpassed.. you don't get this from other couples. He is concerned for her safety and creativity. Their skill is unsurpassed and they changed the sport from being a disjointed set of dances to a complete flow! Add to this they are always in support of each other.. no nitpicky nonsense. Their humility, a complete absence of arrogance, and their work ethic is incredible. They are still unmatched in the world. They changed the sport and they are phenomenal, and they are still the best of the best!

Trisha Livingston Trisha-if you will look at the “Barnum and Bailey” routine they did the EXACT SAME LIFT that the judges complained about in “Face the Music”. The very same one that was now illegal. The only thing I remember about that competition was the way Oxsana Grichuk flapping her arms in the air. And the program having no content at all.

@grantgoffin4774
@grantgoffin4774 2 года назад
This definitely was not the best ice dance of the 1994 Winter Olympics which was clearly Torvill & Dean's own Rhumba original dance. I would argue Gritschuk & Platov's Blues CD, Usova & Zhulin's Golden Waltz CD, and Usova & Zhulin's Rhumba OD were all better as well. However it might well have been the best FD as none of the top 3 had extraordinary FDs for their standards, which would have been enought o win.
@grantgoffin4774
@grantgoffin4774 2 года назад
@@clarkward5102 By that logic Gritschuk & Platov should have won Europeans as they clearly got the most applause for their FD of all the teams there. And Torvill & Dean in the FD there got only the 4th most applause of the final flight. Yet T&D won there still, even over G&P. And I don't say the result was wrong because of that. It isn't American Idol, LOL! Hence why T&D win one event they didn't get the most applause and lose another they did.

Should have won, hands down the best of the night! Shameful judging. Grishok and Platov were messy and chaotic in their movements. This is creative, full of perfect edge work, and beautifully choreographed and delivered. THen G& P reigned for years to come after that. What was the point of evening competing when the results were always the same or predicated? 1994 was really the last time I truly watched ice dancing. This was a wonderful memory! Every time I watch this routine I think the same things. J&C deserved gold not just for the routine and the way they skated it but for daring to change 80% of their routine 2 weeks before the Games. Could Grishuk & Platov (or any other couple) have skated their routine to this standard in just 2 weeks?! This is the definition of ice dance and of 2 people loving what they do and loving skating together.

The judges should still be hanging their heads in shame! I agree the winners were sloppy and chaotic, movement was unrelated to the music, it seemed to be a mad dash to see which would finish first, the skating or the music! Ugh!

I can kind of see why it didn’t win though as there is a lot of preparation for stand-alone signature moves which I guess could be interpreted as lack of flow. Even though they didn’t win I guess we should be grateful to experirnce 2 very different versions of this programme for the price of 1!

It's too bad that the first version of this free dance wasn't well received at Europeans earlier that season because I actually liked that version better (I thought it flowed better). Considering that they had a very short window of time to make alterations, Jayne and Chris did a very admirable job. And even though this comeback didn't pan out as they had planned, they're still legends in probably everyone's book (or at least they should be anyways). And we also got that masterpiece of a rhumba OD too.

gk891, but as the commentators even said even the crowd wasn't that impressed at Europeans (they got good applause but not the best that night, Gritshuk & Platov for sure, and maybe even Usova & Zhulin and Rakhommo & Kokko got more). So I understand why they felt they needed changes since neither the crowd or judges were that enthusiastic, even though like you said I thought it was brilliant at Europeans. It shows the obsession and expectation of them for flashiness given who they were, so I understand their responding to that when they really finished only 3rd in FD and 3rd overall at Europeans and won just by a fluke ordinal flip, and when even the crowd there wasn't that enthused. Unlike here where they were clearly the crowds choice atleats.

This is still a joy to watch after all these years. I totally stopped watching the Olympics after this routine only got them a bronze. This was great, especially when compared to the Russian meh routine that got the gold. Its ice dancing not a speed skating contest. I want to see beauty and art. T&D gave us that. And, to anyone serious that Grishuk/Platov, though they were great skaters, were technically superior in this instance, do you have eyes? I am totally with the audience who cheered so much for T&D during the award ceremony and not so much for either Russian couple. Shame on those judges who had an agenda instead of rewarding excellence. I think this was a way to tell the world, even though they opened it up to professionals, the Olympic committee still really wanted amateurs. Nonetheless, T&D had had a wonderful career since then. So I guess they got the last laugh.

I liked this program better than their infamous Bolero. This was so entertaining and very well skated. But you can see how Christopher Dean has to be in charge at all times. Not as much of a "partnership" as current ice dance teams. But they definitely got low balled on the judging.

Yes they were robbed! Chris had to get off the stage. Judges need a “lift” right out of there. I have been watching Torvill and Dean for months now and this still irritates me.
