@@stewartellinson8846 Yet some people pin their hopes on the Labour Party waving a magic wand and all will become right again in a land overflowing with honey and ambrosia. You might ask yourself why this wonderful Labour Party you mention lost to the Tories. You just don't understand politics or people. "Understanding" comes with age. As you will discover. Allow me ... most people have short, selective memories. (See above.) And, their views change over time. Consider, if the Labour Party, after being in power for their five years slot, say, decided to improve on the triple lock thing and introduced a much better deal for pensioners ... once they reached 70, then Labour would get a second term, especially if they introduced a wealth tax on the seriously minted. With that in mind who's to say Hunt, or his Tory successor, won't, as if by accident, wave their own magic wand and introduce a huge increase to the personal allowance? In time for the upcoming general election. All carefully wrapped in a "surprise" Autumn Budget because, even more surprise, the economy is doing better than expected. He's got to get the pensioners back onside somehow, and, what better way than to simply buy them? Not just cash but with carers, in a nice retirement home ... which doubles as a hospice when the need arises ... and is tacked on to a nice new hospital with an excellent geriatrics department. There again who's to say the seriously minted come out with "fffk that" and vote in their own interests. We've all got our price, and don't expect principles to get in the way. Anyway, most people will live long enough to be pensioners, and, if they see "free money" ahead which party do you suppose they'll vote for? Do you see how fickle we are when there's money involved?

It's not about any specific Tory PM or government at this point (though Rishi Sunak certainly isn't helping matters) - people are fed up of the utter chaos of the past 14 years caused by the entire Tory organisation. The reason why nothing they do will help them is because it's a systemic problem with the Tory Party itself; people are already set for punishing them for their horrendous track record, and there's nothing they can do to fix that.

An interesting comment regarding the shadow comment - re “they’re there to … increase their own personal wealth”, would you care to support that assessment with any evidence about particular members of the shadow cabinet, or is it a blanket generalisation along the lines of “all politicians are the same” ? I’d be willing to grant that most members of the shadow cabinet are anxious to further their careers by actually getting into government, but I’m not prepared to concede that that’s a despicable ambition per se for any politician… But I’m open to listen to any evidence you can adduce to support your position…

Sunak is on the same derailed train that he started on. The cost of economic calamity has the majority of tax revenue going into private companies for shareholders. The tax burden is on the middle and working class. Inflation and Brexit are squeezing peoples’ budgets until the pip squeaks. Falling inflation doesn’t decrease prices, it just slows how quickly they rise. Trying to leave the ECHR will remove more human rights from British people and Rwanda is an expensive and hollow attempt at cruelty in gesture politics. Sunak will disappear to California where he won’t be connected with government any more and we will have to start salvaging our dignity and reputation.

Surely, for prices to come back to the levels they were pre-covid, Brexit, Ukraine, or whatever I am being told is the reason for the hike in prices, then inflation has to be negative. All 2% means is that prices are not rising as fast as they were but, energy prices, for example, will still be at the exorbitant level it is. How can that be called "better off"?
