Here is a test granted by the owner of HG Semi and I would like to give a special thanks to Mr. North for giving the premission to do these test with 2 batches that are currently not avialble to the public.
Following test are tested against 2 X Toshbia Non Red Dot 2sc2879 Power Transistors.
Three HG Semi 2sc2879 Batches are tested against each other primarly but just to compare with Toshbias Counterpart.

I would think that life of service/reliability would also be a factor. Unfortunately, the most cost effective way of doing that is by service in the field.

I will just stick with my DEIs they are performing just as good as the HGs & the HGs are just as good as a Toshiba. It's how you run your equipment that matters most. Everything has its Limits.

Wait for it.....wait for it.....lol you know why they are......if your DEI are made up to 4 or 5 years ago they are HGs :) For example qny Texas Star made up to 4 or 5 years ago have HG2879 on them with DEI tops...the owner of DEI switched over to HG ...I was bound to not speak about this but I can now...atleast I hope I can I need to double check lol.

I noticed you are selling these on "the auction site." Does anyone know if these last as long as the Toshiba transistors? How long have these been available? Chinese stuff just does not seem to be as well made as their other Asian counterparts spec wise. Even the gold plating on the solder tabs looks a little cheaper to me. If they last, then half the price is a good deal (60.oo µ$ for a matched pair at the time of this writing), if they don't last as long as Toshibas then to me it is both time and currency wasted. I welcome your comments. Keep up the good work Rekindling The Reformation !!

I have a Texas star 667V If the variable power button is NOT engaged, Does the variable power knob affect the power output of the unit , or just the dead key?
@1883GotDown
@1883GotDown 8 лет назад
it affects both the dead key and the total output because that variable is just a variable resistor the power that you are putting into the amplifier goes through that variable so it is just putting resistance don't leave input signal that you are putting into the amplifier so in that case it affects both it's not actually controlling the output of the amp like some would expect its controlling the input of the amp which in retrospect controls the output because the more you put in the more you get out the less you put in the less you get out

I am torn between the 04-4 and the 08-4 now. If you notice there are mixed results. I was hoping to have only one set to begin doing some extensive testing with and maybe a few builds when I possibly might have to use both and do more test with them because the other test is which one is more durable. they both can handle the voltage that I toshiba can. The guy that owns this company is working very hard around the clock to transform his transistor if not the same as Toshiba maybe a little better.

it effects both. it is a variable resistor so it has resistance on the signal that your putting into the amp. You see what i am saying so it affects everything.

What is the break down voltage of these devices? What is the gain? What sort of SWR load can they take before they fail? What the inter mod on these? How come quality control is so bad they can have 3 different performance levels on one transistor? How come their are no specification sheets for these and some standard they hold to? Why are more people than ever having amp failures pretty early in the life of their amplifiers? I am guessing you get them for $9-$15 each in bulk since people sell these for $33 and less.
@1883GotDown
@1883GotDown 8 лет назад
Very easily answered bud. GREAT NEWS! These transistors WERE ABSOLUTLY were TERRIBLE when they first came out about 5 or 6 years ago and my buddy over at Texas Star quickly figured out that the quality control, break down voltage, alpha, & durablity just straight out SUCKED and i concured with this with my own test...............fastward a few years since about 8 months or so ago I contacted the owner of this company and pretty much communicated back in the 4th a good bit to get my fill of how much he knew pretty much of our culture here in the US you know what I mean by culture I'm talking about the Homebrew aspect love this Hobby and I also expressed to him the importance finding a replacement transistor for the Toshiba 2sc2879. I got him up to speed on the culture here in the way we do things share with him about competition I'm pretty much just explain how everything was now I'll be Homebrew Builders did what they did you know all that good stuff and also explain further how much of a benefit to him and us if he was to be able to begin working on updating improving and modifying his 2sc2879 counterpart. So that is what has been going on for the last eight or so months comma he has been doing extensive testing extensive work and whenever he would be ready to send a new batch down here for testing I would test it and he also gathered a few other people for testing as well around the globe one of the guys that lives in Switzerland if my memory serves me right has done extensive testing on how well the breakdown voltage is it has tested these devices all the way up to 23 volts successfully. To make a long story short the last Batch which consist of 2 different type transistors we have labeled 04-4 and 08-4 for reference only are the CLOSEST AND MOST IMPRESSIVE YET! WE ARE VERY EXCITED! We will perform many more test of course to show how well they are able to handle everything that you just listed. i am glad to be able able update you on the new updated news of these transistors and this is a good thing brother because we have a guy here that is in the position at a Semiconductor Company that is going to give it all he has and try everything he can with his engineers to make his to 2879 if not better at least as good as it possibly can compared to the Toshiba counterpart in but he has made a absolutely amazing Leap Forward from where it started off and of course he has also updated the 2290 and the sd1446 under my request. We have already tested durablity and swr load on front and back. so far we have not blown a device under testing but we have a lot of testing to do. best way is to build and use in everday use. i am probably no where near as knowledable as you are in this field but i am doing my best here and n i dont get them that cheap that you stated and these 2 specific updated devices each have a place i feel. also he is matching with a loop tracers (i might not have wordee that right lol) so i am able to purchase already matched devices. thanks so much for stopping by and giving your input which was a very intellectual comment and as I said I can tell that you really do know what you are talking about and they do have a data sheet of course it's just a copy pretty much of the regular Toshiba. stop by anytime bud. would love to have your input on different things. gatekeeper

one last thing....these are 3 different versions. the one which you can buy right now is the USA for reference. and the other 2 were updated versions each a little different then each other. these 2 are not for sale to the public yet but i am able to purchase while he is figuring out what he is going to do exactly. he may offer 2 differnt types or may just replace the current usa version with the 04-4. mainly these two different versions worst sin to me and to other testers to see which one was the best over the other and what we all found out being me 1 tester in China and the other in Switzerland found out that these 08 - 4 had more gain with less Drive but the saturation point of the transistor was lower then the 04 - 4 I am thinking which I will be doing test with that thing 08 - 4 would be a great transistor to use as a driver transistor in a multi-stage PA.

@@1883GotDown your welcome man. A LOT of misconceptions about amplifiers classes of bias, etc. A class C amp is junk for ssb. It's OK for am, but it requires a scope to set the carrier point. The carrier will provide a bias from the rectification that happens at the BE junction. It's very touchy as to the level of carrier needed. But, it will give the efficiency of class C on a class B amplifier (well, nearly so). If you do the wild swing crap that a lot of CBers do, the previous statement is invalid. Also, single ended amplifiers (one pill) are inherently harmilonic generators in comparison to push pull. Biased or not. A two 455 driving 8 2879s, biased, running cleanly and not over driven is about the best combo you can find. The pair of 455s will loaf at 120 watts out and the 2879s will scream. This assumes not building the 2 pill to out out 300 watts...... Just loaf it at 120 peak.

i need to send you the plans to build a analog gain tester. it's not a scientific device with balls on accuracy.. it's only used as a comparison tester. then you can compare the transistors beta. as for the pair that didn't produce more power with a hotter radio. could you have reached saturation with the lower powered radio?
@1883GotDown
@1883GotDown 8 лет назад
that is exactly what appears to have happened then I was already at the point of saturation with the hot radio because there was no more gain out of the transistors we have now figured out that those particular transistors will be very good for low voltage operations and also might be very good to use in the driver sections so I think he is actually going to sell both of them

I am not trying to be hard on you so I am sorry if it came off that way. I just hate how almost all of the builders have gone to these because they are cheap. I think that if an American is going to custom make anything by hand they should use a design and parts that will last and perform. You would not hand machine a custom rifle with steel as soft as butter so why hand build an illegal to operate on CB radio amplifier with junk parts??? Like Larry the Cable guy would say " That's like wiping before you poop it don't make no sense!" ....The gain is the most important thing along with rated watts so a 100watt transistor with 13db gain is usually going to grossly outperform a 100watt transistor with 8db gain etc.....Not on a meter but in real world performance on the air. I do not talk to a watt meter at the other end I talk to humans. I want make power and minimal heat. I also do not want to pad the hell out of a device. I have seen linear that have worked close to daily for 5,10,15 years with no parts failures at all on the other hand it seems like few modern custom built amps can make it more than a few months with out failure and few can make it 2 years of daily use with out failing. That means something is wrong! If our TV, Computer, Microwave or radio had that many issues no one would buy them! I do not think it is a matter of having a pretty circuit board or anything like that. I think it comes down to matching and biasing. If the matching transformers are not done right and the biasing is forced than nothing else matter. Poor input and output transformer design means you lose efficiency on input from the radio and output to the coax. Forced biasing just means that amp is roaming all over the place between A,B and C directly related to input power and impedance fluctuations which equals all kinds of harmonics and wasted heat. That heat is watts not working for you but against you. If you look at true amateur (RM does not count)transistor amps they do not have any of the issues you see in the CB hobby. I think the days of forced static biasing with sand bar resistors is gone. With the price of quality transistors being sky high anything less than thermally control biasing no matter what class you want is a dead horse. I also think that for people wanting to chase after big watt number's broad bandwidth transformer coupling also makes no sense. I just bought a 1 transistor amp that uses a MRF454 that with 5 watts in makes 200 RMS watts that are harmonically clean. That is in true AB1. Sure it only has a band width of 26Mhz-28Mhz but what great power output. IF I set the radio up for 1.5watt dead key and let it swing to 6 watts it will be a beast with one transistor. On SSB 12 watts PEP input will get me 348 watts out. Now imagine you built a 4 transistor unit like this and where getting 800 watts RMS from a 20 watt drive. So now a radio with a 5 watt deadkey and 20 watts of swing would be a beast on the air. Want more than 8 watt dead key and 32 watts of swing etc....No driver needed if the right radio is picked right and tuned right. Imagine driving an 8 transistor amp with a single well chosen driver. I just think that if you are going to spend money on expensive parts you should get all of the power and as little heat as you can. It should be efficient and durable. Why spend good money on good parts to get 1/4-1/2 as much power out and generate 2x-3X times the heat and blow up transistors??? The only hard part would be getting your customer to turn down the power driving their amps. You should not need that much imput power to drive an amp!

Here, I'll help you out by shortening all that BS into one sentence. "Ham radio equipment costs more than CB radio equipment, because it's made with more expensive (quality) and a greater quantity of parts." (Not that it actually works any better, because it's still at the whim of a loose nut behind the microphone just like CB radio, so tighten it up)!

I'm guessing this was a reply to someone else lol kind of consuming i don't think it was to me. We went to these be sure all the others have stopped producing the devices...this is just another option...not the only option.

For FM I would have to tune the Amp a little differently and change the input padding. i can do it bud.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipolar_junction_transistor This explains it better than I ever could. I do not trust any electronic part that does not have hard standards as minimums they will not go bellow that you can count on just like the sun rising in the morning and setting in the evening. All steel is not the same and if you need certain performance parameters and durability best choose wisely. In transistors wattage is the easy part it is all the other parameters that make or break the transistor. The fact that the OEM will not put their name on them and make themselves known means they have no pride and probably make a cheap garbage product otherwise they would put their name on it!

First of all what would my knowledge of code matter 30 wm or 200wm it has no bearing on electronics or amplifiers. As to ARRL if 1 out of 100 CB'er understood 1/10th of what in in the handbook we would not have 99% of the issues we have. Power usage is not the problem on 11m band it is over modulated radio's with no limiter's, poorly done NPC mod and super swing kits!!! Poorly designed non-linear amplifiers improperly matched with poorly designed biasing and shunting to ground does not help either. If people where not ignorant than we would not have these issues. If people understood a few things they would not fall prey to radio/amplifier butchers. I am damn glad in some ways because as long as idiots are over modulating, over driving their amps, using amps that have poorly designed transformer coupling, poorly designed biasing, generating all kinds of heat and little RMS power I can compete with 1/3 the number of transistors. That means a modern vehicles not suburbans with V8 and all kinds of alternators or generators, that means smaller vehicle, less equipment, less wires, better fuel economy and less money tied up in gear. My gear is in my daily driver. Why use 16 transistors if I can do the same amount of work with 6. Even dumber to do at home where better antennas make more power less needed. It also makes you a better target to get busted. The quickest way to attract attention to yourself is to bother your neighbors and local amateur operators with dirty splatter box's!! If CB policed it's own and did not get stupid those of us not causing trouble would not have targets on our backs. If white trash was not acting like ignorant bigots spewing foul language, using noise toys and having one way conversations on alligator stations people would not have left in such huge number's. going to be on in a given area. The fact that so many amp builders can not even get 1 year out of an amp with out it failing tells me what I need to know! Everyone I know with a modern amp has issues they all need to be repaired regularly. So either the parts are junk or the design is junk or both are junk! Heck most people can not even get 3-6 months of daily use from an amp with out it failing. Even old TS amps last longer than that when not over driven! So I find the idea of being called a newb quite a compliment. Any ignorance I have is not because I am lazy or not willing to seek out the truth! Math and Science are not my enemy they are my friend! The truth is the truth and it does not matter where it is found their is only one truth! I work hard for my money and since I was 12 years old I have had my own official job and been paying taxes on my money! I got my own job washing dishes at 12 years old no one else got me that job. I had to get permission from school to work. I am getting ready to go off to college and I will be working all the way through. I can not afford to be stupid or to waste my money foolishly. The more I learn the more I can an do for myself and the less I have to pay other's to do for me. I have to work on my truck myself and I hunt and fish so I can afford to eat well and so my family eats well! Being poor sucks but God gave me a decent mind and the ability to read and write and seek out the truth! My Library card did not cost me a dime the ARRL handbook I first checked out had not been checked out in 15 years. I know what it is to be poor and to have to make do! Knowledge is my friend. I will not chose ignorance just to be cool or fit in! I just bought a single transistor MRF 454 thermally controlled true class AB1 biased amp. On AM it will put out 180-200 watts RMS with a 6 watts rms dead key for the drive. Do let me know when you guys have something that clean, powerful, efficient and stabile !!! A lot of 2 transistor amps can not put out 200 watts rms with a 5-6 watt dead key! That is with 14.2 volts as well not something stupid like 21 volts. I wish I could take credit for designing it but that would be a lie! I am glad I was smart enough to buy it when I saw it though!!! It is continuously protected against reverse polarity, thermal over load and high swr. It does not have any protection though against stupid! The really great thing though is that if I wanted to run this at home I can run a radio and this amp from a single well made 23 amp switching power supply. with 3 watts in I dead key 75 rms and swinging to 12 watts gives me 258 watts rms on AM. On SSB 12 watts PEP in gives 348 watts out. My car when running is more like 15.5 volts so my power output is a bit better in the car. If I was a no code I would want a broad band amp that would cover down to 24Mhz for 12m band and up a bit past 28Mhz and maybe more for 6m etc.... this amp only does 26-28Mhz efficiently because it is a tuned input design. It would need to have multiple tuning circuits to operate this efficiently beyond it's designed 26Mhz-28Mhz range. Either people where not paying attention or they did not understand what they heard. This is not a broad bandwidth transformer coupled amplifier that is why it is so efficient and get's so much power from a single transistor. If you have ever seen a tube amp where you need to select the right band for the radio you are operating you get the idea. In this case the input and output of this transistor amp is tightly tuned so it has a narrow band width. With a transistor amplifier what you do to one side has to be replicated on the other so what you do on input ideally needs to matched on the output side. When you go making a transistor amp broad band on the input and output you really need to add a lot of filtering to make it clean on the output side if you want to avoid having a splatter box and a box with a lot of power being at odd phase angles and such. You almost never see this sort of filtering on anything made for the illegal CB market. When you go with a narrow band width a lot of that can be avoided if the design is clean. A Bird meter is not immune to power at odd phase angles which is why you see such a HUGE increase in "Peak" power on dirty designs. When you see huge increases between rms and PEP that is a good indicator of a splatter box! That is also why PEP power increases do not account for much increase in range, S-Units on the receive end or increases in intelligibility.

Nothing wrong with CB other than rude ignorant people mostly on AM making trouble. Combine that with over modulated clipping signals and dirty splatter box amps and it makes the hobby look bad even though their are plenty of good people on AM. I run CB but about 99% SSB My gear is always clean and mean! In fact I just bought a NOS Sears Road Talker Base 40CH SSB.

That is good. My Dad talks about life in the deep south and how they had a Net and it was well policed and family oriented. They used to do T-hunts or Fox Hunts where basicly someone hides and then through a carrier and talks periodically and people have to locate them and touch their vehicle. I have never known anything like that. Where I live it is mostly drunks and trash dropping the f-bomb and agitating each other on AM. On the road truckers also dropping the f-bomb and talking about nonsense that sounds like a bad episode of Jeryy Springer. Which is why I mostly talk on SSB.
