Toshiba in-store presentation: "Why Aren't You on DVD?"

An in-store loop of promos for the still-new DVD format, but issued after it had been out a few months (early 1998) and with a little more hipness and humor than the first wave of demo discs. Despite the hyping of 5.1 sound, this disc was only produced with 2-channel sound so you're not missing that by watching it here, and there's a brief explanation as to why this is in 4x3 (because hardly anyone had widescreen TVs yet!)

Spring of 2022 will be DVD’s 25th anniversary in the U.S. the first players were released in. March/April of 1997 in the U.S.

I was 5 years old when DVDs was first introduced, but we didn't get a DVD player until 2001. Since then, we still own a few functioning DVD players we currently own (but none of them I own are manufactured by Toshiba).

I prefer LaserDisc picture and sound that is close to DVD quality, and I prefer Reel to Reel over CD.

What they didn't tell you was that HD-DVD was on the horizon and they were planning to phase out DVDs. DVDs were originally supposed to be a stopgap until HD video on a CD sized disc was possible.

I know right. Most people today who still buy disc already have a Blu Ray player and we even have 4K Blu Rays now. Yet, most movie studios still sell standalone DVDs. Three video disc formats in production at once is too many in my opinion.

Yeah, I loved it as soon as the BS about "audio quality" hype starts. I had the Pioneer Laserdisc/DVD player combo when it came out. I remember when "AC-3" launched on the LD format. Up to that point we had 2 ch - 1411 kbps Red Book CD Quality sound - only to be replaced w/ 5.1 MP3 low quality sound. We'd have to wait for DTS to actually attempt to "get us back" to HQ Surround sound. Thanks DVD. You might have looked better than Laser, but sound better -? I think not. Now HDDVD - on the other hand....

+Will Wright III bluray is king when it comes to best quality of audio and picture. Digital HD is quite convienient when you run out of disc space to buy recent movies.

Keep in mind, this was during DVD's humble beginnings. The audio on DVDs didn't get better until a few years later after Laserdisc got discontinued.

I'll have a triple *EXTREME 1990s* neat please, barman! DVD was a quantum leap over VHS, especially once they released recordable media and the recorders that burned them (even though DVD recorders never really took off because they couldnt just have *ONE* type of DVD-R or DVD-RW disc and this was when Sky+ and Tivo were coming out with HDD based recorders) Also, they haven't exactly future proofed their video by misquoting the acronym (it's Digital _Versatile_ Disc) what happens when DVD-ROMs are use for games and software? What happens when DVD Audio comes out (this video using Digital Video Disc) might have had something to do with DVD Audio failing (Digital *Video* Disc *Audio?* U WOT M8)
