Toshiba Satellite L655 - S5158. Trial by combat to replace the CPU cooling fan. I haven't done this before and didn't have a guide to follow so there were a few times I got stuck but I got it replaced in the end.
Apparently my old fan was dying for awhile, it would get really loud, and run on full blast frequently. A few days ago, my laptop started overheating and would emergency shutdown. This new fan is much quieter, even during a stress test my CPU temperature stays low now. I think cleaning the heatsink with compressed air also made a difference.
I found the replacement fan on amazon for $9.
A few things I learned:
* You'll have to unscrew everything.
* The hard drive and dvd drive need to come out, which I was hoping to avoid. If you don't take out the dvd drive you'll bend the connector trying to detach the motherboard. I started to bend mine but it looks like I didn't break anything.
* The inside case around the keyboard DOES NOT NEED TO COME OFF. It's really easy to start snapping this up above the dvd tray, but this doesn't do anything. This will break some plastic connections and the case will be a bit looser. There's no screws or anything under there, just leave it alone.
* The heatsink isn't attached to the fan, they are just taped together
Tools used:
* A few small phillips head screw drivers
* The tiniest possible flat head screw driver to poke at the ribbon cable connectors
* A small flat head screwdriver to pry apart the case and lever the motherboard out on the side where the connectors are (headphone, speaker, hdmi, ethernet)
* Compressed air for cleaning
* Some electrical tape to re-stick parts during reassembly
* Fine needle nosed pliers to pick up screws
* Small pliers to push the ribbon cable connector back in
* A tray so no small screws get lost
I opened up my laptop once to determine which fan to get and ended up with an extra screw when I put it back together. At the end of the video I ended up with a second extra screw.
